Nothing against Gil, but I've got a soft spot for Saul. They've both had some hot beats though (The Revolution... vs. Penny for a Thought!).

I think the horrible Saul-clone on that Kanye track renewed my love for the real Saul.

Best things Saul has ever done: Penny for a Thought and the prison freestyle in Slam.

no, best thing he's done
is live slam poetry stuff,
he is THE DAMN FIRE

I saw him do a
piece where he does live voice scratch,
cutting himself up

but carl hancock rux
is just as good on the stage
(his first album: DOPE)

penny for a thought RULES! but the album was patchy... Wheras Gil boasts 'lady day & john coltrane', 'a lovely day', 'home is where the hatred is', 'johannesburg', etc etc etc...

Is he still in jail?

"Is he still in jail?"

crack, i believe.

I thought he got out last year.

Gil Scott Heron gets the nod because his Flying Dutchman LPs are almost untouchable (and probably not on Pitchfork's Best of the 1970s list), whereas Saul Williams really hasn't done all that much yet.
