aside from anything on ILM, I mean

ILM IS my music writing!

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Thursday, 24 June 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

No wait...I read the SFJ piece in the NYT.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Thursday, 24 June 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

So...by default it's that.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Thursday, 24 June 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Though it was very good.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Thursday, 24 June 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

It wasn't badly written but the interview with Jim DeRo in the Big Takeover inspired an unsurprisingly negative reaction.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 24 June 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Adam, if it wasn't bad, then it doesn't deserve to be on the worst thread. This has to be comparitive otherwise it just falls apart (hence no ILM).

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 24 June 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

It might have been that 4 star Patti Scialfa review in Rolling Stone.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 24 June 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Beastie Boys - 5 stars
Patti Scialfa - 4 stars
Jesse Malin - 4 stars
Wilco - 4 stars
The Cure - 4 stars
Phish - 4 stars

OMG BEST YEAR EVUH

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 24 June 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Every time an issue of Rolling Stone comes out, another rock critic brain cell dies. It's tragic, really, considering I've known some formerly cool and/or smart people who write/wrote for them. A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

The worst thing I read today though was Chuck Klosterman's latest column in the new SPIN. I usually like what he writes, but this one was particularly horrifying. Hate it when SPIN gets all self-referential. It's like they are writing it for the 9 other rock critics that they hang out with at the same bar.

Plenty of work got done last night when I got back in from watching couple of great local bands, one, Dirty North play a mash up of ska, hip-hop and razor-sharp lyrics like Antic Monkeys are rattling my cage. They were supported by Mike Garry, a fantastic poet whose Mancunian street poems will make him the poet laureate of Manchester within months.

so if i was british would this sound like an enjoyable night to me?

north sea jazz dit weekend (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 14 July 2009 15:27 (sixteen years ago)

does that first sentence even work?

When I saw this revived I thought "I wonder if that has anything to do with that DiS 'death of music journalism' week...?" and thought if it wasn't, it needed to be posted here.

They're Antic Monkeys, not Arctic ones. I dunno why.

i've noticed that the threads about "lol terrible music writing" always have the same dullards on them, people who are never on the threads about good music. hrrrm.

haha i love how it starts out meandering and tl;dr, then you scroll down some and he says:

If you're among the 90 percent of humanity that loves The Beatles unconditionally, the next 2,000 words are going to anger you.

yeah there's a lot of gold in archives of Paul Shirley's music writing for espn. i recall a reviewing of animal collective awhile back being very entertaining.

I recently came across Cassie Ramone’s Friendster profile through Google, and it happens that it is private to people other than her friends. Maybe I’ll have to sign up for a Friendster account. Maybe Cassie Ramone will accept my friend request, although I doubt Cassie Ramone will check her Friendster account often during this upcoming tour.

That Beatles piece would be a hell of a lot more convincing if he cited modern artists a bit more interesting than U2 and Oasis. Is the arrogance of his voice put on, or is that really him?

ugh @ that Vivian Girls thing. Total concept review misfire. Do they not have editors?

Great news, but why refer to them as "The most influential band of their generation"? Even if it were true, why write something so horrible and overwrought?

King of Snake (j-rock), Thursday, 17 September 2009 19:51 (sixteen years ago)

what's totally messing with my head is that "Friendster" is italicized. I like this sentence:

Opening band The Beets had nothing to do with the fictional band from the classic Nickelodeon television show Doug.

nabisco, Thursday, 17 September 2009 19:56 (sixteen years ago)

because, you know, I actually would get my hopes up

No, that's him. I dont really think he has a clue what he is talking about. He did an ok article about Sunn 0))) though.
