Rush playing "7 and 7 Is"?

Clint, Friday, 25 June 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Of all the songs I'd ever be curious to hear Rush cover....well, none of them are here. "Heart Full of Soul" might be interesting, i guess. Fuckin' NO ONE should ever play "Summertime Blues". Ever. Again.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I downloaded a sample of the Summertime Blues cover a while back. They go for the Who vibe, and it wasn't terrible until Geddy Lee started singing. Then it became Rush.

dleone (dleone), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Did they prog it up at all?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 25 June 2004 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't imagine them bringing the grit to "Crossroads" that even Cream brought.

Clint, Friday, 25 June 2004 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I will say this much, Rush at this point doing a covers EP is something quite unexpected. It also knocks them off of the list of bands that have never officially released a cover song. The song list is probably things that they perhaps did back when the band was coming up before the first album, since they are booking this tour with the 30th anniversary tag line.

Their next record will probably have a 20 minute sequel to the Necromancer.

earlnash, Friday, 25 June 2004 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

earlnash correct. From the press blurb:

Anthem/Atlantic recording group Rush has unveiled details of their upcoming new collection, dubbed FEEDBACK. This unique set sees the renowned trio – Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart – celebrating the band’s 30th anniversary by performing cover versions of eight rock classics from the Sixties. FEEDBACK is slated to arrive in stores on June 29.

“Geddy, Alex, and I were channeling back to 1966 and 1967, when we were thirteen- and fourteen-year-old beginners,” writes Peart in the liner notes to FEEDBACK. “We thought it would be a fitting symbol to commemorate our thirty years together if we returned to our roots and paid tribute to those we had learned from and were inspired by. We thought we might record some of the songs we used to listen to, the ones we painstakingly learned the chords, notes, and drum parts for, and even played in our earliest bands.”

FEEDBACK marks the first time that Rush has recorded songs by other artists and writers. Included are such groundbreaking staples as Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth” and “Mr. Soul,” the Yardbirds’ “Heart Full of Soul” and “Shapes of Things,” and the Who’s “The Seeker.” FEEDBACK also features versions of two songs which defined the heavy rock power trio tradition that gave birth to Rush – Cream’s explosive take on Robert Johnson’s “Crossroads” and Blue Cheer’s still-extreme rendition of Eddie Cochran’s “Summertime Blues.

Not sure how I feel about this record. I still haven't gotten around to buying my own copy of Vapor Trails yet.

Jeff W (zebedee), Friday, 25 June 2004 10:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw, bless them. Lots.

You know, it was always the dull, purist "well I don't consider that music" rush fans I despised. Rush, I just disliked.

Apart from that one track. Also, that mashup with one of the two annie lennox tracks I can stand.

hey I'm kind of excited to hear this!

Fuckin' NO ONE should ever play "Summertime Blues". Ever. Again.

Once you've heard Rush's version, you'll only be more adament in that stance. I would use this song as exhibit A on why CanCon is a bad thing.

Vic Funk, Friday, 25 June 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it getting radio play? I haven't heard it but it seems like an awful fit for them (like most of these songs). Why do they do these things? I'm reminded of Geddy rapping.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 25 June 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard they're actually playing "Roll the Bones" for this tour! I, uh, can't wait. Yeah.

Joe (Joe), Saturday, 26 June 2004 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Why did that happen? Oh, `cos it happens.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 26 June 2004 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

. It also knocks them off of the list of bands that have never officially released a cover song.

Not true, sorry. Actually their very first single was Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away".

Still, this is the first time in 20 years I've been halfway intrigued by an impending Rush LP. Probably DL a song or two

Once you've heard Rush's ["Summertime Blues"], you'll only be more adament in that stance. I would use this song as exhibit A on why CanCon is a bad thing.

Alex, do you hate "Summertime Blues" as a song or are you acknowledging Blue Cheer's definitive version?

And Vic, are you Canadian; and if so, what's your objection to CanCon? I've always had mixed feelings.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Saturday, 26 June 2004 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

If I had to hear the song, I only want to hear Blue Cheer do it. But even then, not so much.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 26 June 2004 05:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Just dl'd their version of 'Summertime Blues' and have to admit I actually quite like it. Laugh if you like, but I'm getting moderately excited about the prospect of their version of 'Heart Full Of Soul' now...

GET BUSY WITH THE FACTS!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

and let's kick some gluteus MAX!

Scott CE (Scott CE), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

IT"S A PARALLAX!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I am listening to the EP right now. How fucking wacky. I like it, not sure how much. It sort of reminds me of the album of garage band covers that the Ramones did about ten years ago! Except Rush would appear to be somewhat better at their instruments and stuff! Haven't decided yet whether Rush's version of "Summertime Blues" is better than the one on the new Black Keys album yet. Its such a great song, though. And they both blatantly cover the Blue Cheer version...

chuck, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

My understanding was that Rupert Hine was the "rapper" on Roll the Bones...not Geddy Lee

kickitcricket (kickitcricket), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

My bad....it was Geddy Lee

kickitcricket (kickitcricket), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Vic, are you Canadian; and if so, what's your objection to CanCon?

I live in Canada (wasn't born here); I object on the basis that Rush is getting airplay because lazy rock radio programmers are thinking "Well, it's summertime, so I guess we should play this," instead of playing something on the basis of merit (regardless of the band's homeland).

I heard this song on the radio one afternoon a month ago and thought "Holy Christ this is terrible!" but I didn't know who it was. Later that same day, I heard the DJ introduce it on a different channel, and say it was coming from a new album, and I was gripped with fear at the possibility of being subjected to it blasting out of cars and establishments all summer long.

Vic Funk, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

chuck, were there any rush albums in stairway to hell?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

the first album, moving pictues, and permanent waves. i clearly underrated them at the time, though. i HATED geddy's voice when i was growing up, and it took me a while to come around to realizing it was sort of beautiful. anyway, my favorite period by far is the early '80s new wave era, when they wanted to be devo or the police. (signals -- is that the album with subdivisions on it? -- is lovely.)

chuck, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

chuck, were there any rush albums in stairway to hell?

There are, but they are far outnumbered by Kix albums.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

...well, they're outnumbered by one.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

signals -- is that the album with subdivisions on it? -- is lovely

That is the one, unless I'm very wrong -- and "Subdivisions" is actually probably my favorite song by them, though specifically that great version on A Show of Hands. Sure it's not *radically* different or anything but somewhere it works more for me there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

"Subdivisions" is a perfect song, if you ask me (cheers, Ned!)

"Any escape might help to soothe the unattractive thruths, but the suburbs have no charms to soothe the restless dreams of youth."

I challenge your precious 50 Cents and Dizzee Rascals to come up with something as brilliant and succint as that.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I've always wondered whether "Subdivisions" inspired "Suburbia" by the Pet Shop Boys, to tell you the truth.

chuck, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

they're not that different...subdivisions is pretty new wave synth pop rush....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

actually the main synth melody when the "dum dum dum da dum dum da dum" riff comes in at the beginning reminds me of kraftwerk alot.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd love to see the PSBs say that. Hell, Saint Etienne actually *sampled* Rush on their second album, there's some sort of UK fop-pop love going on. (See also the Placebo conundrum.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Signals sounds more like Oh No! It's Devo-era Devo, methink.s

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I love ILM :0)

Jeff W (zebedee), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard the version of "Mr Soul" today. I actually really liked it!

The intro of "La Villa Strangiato" (after the classical guitar part - the part with the guitar harmonics and then with the bass and drums) and the intro of "Autobahn" sort of remind me of each other.
