Anybody ever heard of Malcom Holcombe?

I saw Patterson Hood last night (best show I've seen since...well, since the Drive By Truckers on Halloween...and even that's a tie...but that's for another thread) and Chip Robinson opened (he's in the Backsliders, right?) - he was good, but the best song he played was a cover of a song by a dude named Malcolm Holcombe - the song was called "Who Carried You" and it ruled - anybody know anything about him?

Sure you don't mean Roscoe Holcomb?

Yeah, that song's one of the best ones on this album. He's good, one of these songwriter's songwriters -- lots of guys in Nashville who'll tell you he's the great lost American artist, which isn't really true but he's idiosyncratic enough that you can kind of see why people think so. He reminds me a little of Townes van Zandt in the elusiveness of his lyrics and the way his melodies kind of sneak in the back door. He's not Townes, of course. But if you ever get a chance to see him, he's pretty great live.

(trivia note -- that album was produced by Steve Soles, who put the Soles in P.J. Soles -- they divorced ages ago, though)

three months pass...
A friend of mine just wrote a pretty good piece on him. Leaving aside his technophobia and "folk music" blah-blah, he's an interesting guy.

Have you heard the fairly new song by Johnny Reid?... Dance with me.

He died 10 days ago. RIP. I got to see him live, I guess about 20 years ago now, in Maryville. He was as good as you can imagine, better. Like he was channelling something. Just him and a guitar on stage.
