Dave Pajo of Slint/Papa M is Billy Corgan's loveslave

Well, maybe not -- but he *is* Billy Corgan's new bass player. Went and saw Zwan last night, and they were *OF COURSE* great, thanks very much. If you didn't like the Pumpkins you won't like this, I think, if only because it's still Billy singing and all. However, the new group is a bit like a calmer, merrier Pumpkins, still with the hooks, reminds me of later songs like "I of the Morning" or "This Time" or the New Order collaboration. And I have to say, having seen the Pumpkins enough times, Billy was the happiest I've seen him on stage in years, laughing the whole time, having fun, he and Jimmy Chamberlin (who's still in fine form as well) exchanging all these jokes and glances. New guitarist Matt did a good job as well, the crowd really got into it, and the acid test for me: the songs were memorable and I really, really want to hear them again. Hurrah!

But yeah, Dave Pajo. I didn't really entirely notice who was on bass (he was on the other side of the stage from me) except that he was short. Then Billy takes the time between songs to introduce him fully and rave about Papa M and more. Somewhere Steve Albini is committing suicide right this second. ;-)

Does Matt Sweeney still have the cop 'stache?

I reckon I can finally abandon all hope for a third Chavez record. Curses.

this is nearly as funny as the smiths sleeve

Okay, is that who the Matt in the band is? I was wondering, thanks! Mustache and light beard, plus trucker baseball cap. It was great, a total 180 from James Iha's image! But like James he's a great foil for Billy, and took lead more than once and sang backup. The band did one cover -- "Don't Let Me Down," by the Beatles, never liked the sound of the original but this worked a lot better, go figure -- and otherwise all new stuff, no Pumpkins songs at all, which was good, since I want the band to stand on its own. Only a couple of earth-shattering screams from His Baldness and only then when the group was going certifiably crazy. He still dresses all in black, though. ;-)

To Jess -- why, young man, you sound disappointed for some reason. Heh heh heh. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am so very excited.

Sterling Clover, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

took lead more than once

I should say, took lead guitar more than once.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OK, so what about recording (eventually)?

Alacrán, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No word yet. The official website says nothing beyond current tour dates at present, just keep checking back I guess. I do like how the site claims Pajo's name is Skullfisher, though.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It must be said, I like Sterling's approach. ;-)

Yecchh, the thought of being Billy Corgan's love slave is revolting.

Sean, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Surely Steve Albini has nine lives five times over.

nah. has anyone heard the new papa m album?; i am extremely nonplussed.

jess, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am also dismayed. I thought Corgan had much better taste.

sundar subramanian, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Wow, Matt Sweeney - I went to college with him. Used to write reviews for the Daily.

Kerry, Monday, 19 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i remember seeing papa m live once, i recall beards and i also recall about 45 minutes of random noise and tuneless meandering by very serious looking guys then a ray of light as a melody, a break from the dirge shone through but oh it was a byrds cover which of course was a zillion times better than anything in their own quiver. maybe he will bring corgan facial hair advice.
