strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 25 June 2004 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i meant to start this last night after i saw the video on bet. you really need to see the video for full impact.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 25 June 2004 10:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, but which way wow? Good/bad wow?

Jedmond (Jedmond), Friday, 25 June 2004 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I busted out laughing the first time I heard the line "the results came back and the doctor said I'm sorry, you got cancerrr". does that make me a bad person?

Al (sitcom), Friday, 25 June 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

the chances of me seeing this piece of us cultural cancer are minimal anyway

gaz (gaz), Friday, 25 June 2004 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

al i think the problem is that i dont know whether i should laugh or be genuinely moved by the whole thing

i can't believe miccio isn't all over this

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 25 June 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

If it's anywhere on the net I'll watch it tomorrow morning at work.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 25 June 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

it's wow-bad, trust me.

paulhw (paulhw), Friday, 25 June 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

that's my Robert, always peein on people.

Robert's Grandma, Friday, 25 June 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

you were right to go anonymous for that one, shakey mo

benito mussolinington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 25 June 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

woulda been more appropriate to post it as Dave "that could all be special effects!" Chappelle...

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 25 June 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

poor r kelly. he really is the best male r&b singer of the last five-ten years. too bad he like the weewee.

benito mussolinington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 25 June 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

there's better singers then r.kelly in R&B.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Saturday, 26 June 2004 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

name one

benito mussolinington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 26 June 2004 10:31 (twenty-one years ago)

points automatically deducted if they don't write and producer all of their own music while simultaneously being functionally illiterate

benito mussolinington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 26 June 2004 10:32 (twenty-one years ago)

here's a few - bilal, calvin richardson, anthony hamilton, van hunt, d'angelo, maxwell, eric benet.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Saturday, 26 June 2004 10:36 (twenty-one years ago)

see above!!

benito mussolinington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 26 June 2004 10:37 (twenty-one years ago)

haha anyway i said "r&b" not "crappy neo-soul"

benito mussolinington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 26 June 2004 10:38 (twenty-one years ago)

those guys came out before neo soul became overwhelmingly crappy. but okay, since we're doing only R&B (and calvin richardson, anthony hamilton, eric benet still qualify as R&B), try jagged edge, jaheim, joe, case.

as far as this: "points automatically deducted if they don't write and producer all of their own music while simultaneously being functionally illiterate", you said best singer, not multi-tasking, one man band/industry/sub-genre.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Saturday, 26 June 2004 10:45 (twenty-one years ago)

thank you for starting that list with Bilal so I didn't have to read the rest of it.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 26 June 2004 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

n/p.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Saturday, 26 June 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"Here comes this truck now..."

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 26 June 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

...

Wo.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 26 June 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Best bit being him being at the end of his rope, closely followed by 'I Was Doing Drugs'.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 26 June 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I've heard this once and it reminds me of his song 'I Wish' a lot, which was maybe one of the best songs. Congratulations, this track seems cutt!

Aaron Spelling, Sunday, 27 June 2004 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

This video was shockingly funny. The song's pretty good too. I was kind of hoping, from the title, that the song would be a tribute to his fans who stood by him during the controversy; giving something back to the people who saved him psychologically with their lack of moral outrage during his ordeal of unjust persecution. What actually resulted, true tales of divine intervention, is probably more interesting than the if what I had expected had come to pass.

Strangely I sing "Gotham City" to myself a lot when I'm alone.

theodore fogelsanger, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:06 (twenty-one years ago)

it's like macgyver or something. "Ok, Kelly, we're going to give you a chair, a table, a phone a baseball cap and a shopping cart. Now blow our minds."

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

the shopping cart was really what got me

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

*waves arm in front of face* I WAS DOING DRUUUUUUGS!

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

But what was your status with regards to your rope?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The shopping cart was an incredible part. It'd have been more appropriate if he'd been pushing an ACTUAL wheelbarrow, rather than the figurative one.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I WAS AT THE EEEEEND OF MY ROPE! *pulls rope, reaches end*

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Also...
No one's mentioned the audience shots. I'd love to hear how the director articulated his desire for a significant mass of people to be spiritually overwhelmed by the pantomimes they're viewing on stage.
Myself, to give an effectie performance as an extra I'd have to ignore R Kelly's activities and concentrate on genuinely tragic memories.

theodore fogelsanger, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Best R Kelly single since "Ignition (Remix)"!

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

a 60 year old woman bought 12 play today ("my granddaughter played me him") which made me very happy.

benito mussolinington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

New favourites - 'months and months', wearing of hat to signify being 18, disposing of hat to signify being saved by Jesus, 'gang-banging'.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

do you work at a record store benito?

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i do

benito mussolinington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Dubplatestyle: holy crap have you seen that r kelly video yet?
Ronan909: no what is it
Ronan909: i only heard the song this week
Dubplatestyle: its basically him on a stage miming all the parts of the song...the crack addict, the cancer victim, the gang banger...but there's no way that can do it justice
Ronan909: haha
Ronan909: funny faces?
Dubplatestyle: its like...a cross between olivier and fred sanford

benito mussolinington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

sanford!

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

haha do you just lurk to correct people or what?

benito mussolinington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

He saved u.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

haha do you just lurk to correct people or what?

i've been wondering that myself.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

go fax another resume you fucking fraud

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

you had some nice alliteration going but you fucked it with "resume"

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

"albert goldman, kiss my butt"
-- Mojo Nixon

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

you need a tickertape not a scorecard to keep up with this place anymore

benito mussolinington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

actually i don't understand that strongo/blount exchange at all. i thought you dudes were like batman and robin tight.

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

now we've gone and wrecked another beautiful thread with meta.

let's (mama) get back (mama) to the worthwhile (MAma...) subject (MAMA!) ok?

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

k. sweat is (or wuz) better than kelly, but that's about it.

tank is good, avant is good too (http://www.villagevoice.com/issues/0423/clover.php) -- also jojo (but not joe) and of course ginuwine.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

sterling, what is your opinion on Eamon?

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

and have you seen the video for "I Love Them Ho's" yet?

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, Eamon has a strong, gritty, soulful voice that will definitely appeal to the ladies and the rude boys. His content is degrading to women and shows a certain bitterness but I guess he’s young, American and can get away with it. His lyrics do however provide a good basis for sing ‘alongs.’ The music is well orchestrated, catchy and has in some parts a very distinctive old style American college ball sound, yet has all the funk, groove and nu-street soul to make it progressive, easily palatable to urban audiences and popular to the masses. Eamon is definitely a talent for better or worse and has made a solid debut.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

omg you just sucked all the fun out of Eamon. I hate you.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

eamon doesnt deserve/need summaries like that.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

definitely a talent for better or worse!!!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

you said his music was progressive!

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

appeals to the ladies AND rude boys!!!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

MTV: What do you think of the rest of the pop music scene?

Eamon: There's so much bullsh-- around now in pop and hip-hop, and everybody's talking about the same f---ing sh--, like get the f--- outta here. That sh-- is horrible. I don't hate anybody, but that sh-- pisses me off. It's bullsh--. So I wanna change things up and make people go, "Aw, man, this is the hot sh--. Eamon talks from the heart. He's real."

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw, man, this is the hot sh--. Eamon talks from the heart. He's real.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

(i have never heard eamon)

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

(you will love Eamon though)

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

eamon talks from the heart, yo. hes crazy real.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Sterling how could you not have heard Eamon?

I took your summary seriously on the first read-through.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i think sterlings summary could make a great press release, with a few alterations.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)
