How come Vanilla Ice gets so much more ironic appreciation than MC Hammer?

Then how come no one plays Hammer

People love Gravity and Ebullition! (ex machina), Friday, 25 June 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

because Hammer actually had a couple of good early songs. Plus Ice be white.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 25 June 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

MC Hammer came off as a nice guy, and is now a preacher. His only sins were
a) not being able to find anything that rhymes with "Oakland",
b) balloon pants, and
c) His short lived Gangsta phase.
Beating up on MC Hammer would be like kicking a puppy.

Vanilla Ice was a creep, posuer and loser and is still a creep, posuer and loser. And his crimes are legion. Here's 6 off the top of my head:
a) using 'wack' as a noun
b) his freaking pompodour and bleached eyebrow streaks
c) having only one good song, which oddly enough sounded much better when Queen and David Bowie did it first.
d) "Cool as Ice, the motion Picture"
e) Ninja Rap.
f) his spastic dancing
Beating up on Vanilla Ice feels like a civic duty.

a) not being able to find anything that rhymes with "Oakland"

Oaktown, dummy.

there's nothing wrong with Hammer's gangsta phase (although nothing beats Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em).

also, more major Hammer sins:

1. buying that house
2. buying those horses
3. buying off friends
4. not knowing how not to buy stuff

Also "l'il Hank Aaron" should get props alone for his Athletics ballboy days.

He's from Oakland. He was talking about Oakland. But changed it because he couldn't find a rhyme.

Yer right about him buying all that shit. But all new rock/rap stars do that.
Hell, I bet Vanilla made all the same mistakes as Hammer... he just didn't LEARN from them.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Friday, 25 June 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, "Whack" =/= "that guys a wack"

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Friday, 25 June 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I was not aware that either of these people got any props these days, ironic or otherwise. I suppose Hammer was kind of likeable, in a way, while vanilla ice's hard-man pose was just kind of dumb and lame. People are doing the ironic retro cool thing on vanilla ice? I do find that really odd, if true.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 25 June 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

When someone is "wacked", h, what takes place is a "wack". Admittedly, Mr Van Winkle was using it in a different sense, but that's linguistics for you.

I think the answer to this is that people like Queen more than Rick James.

also:

Main Entry: 2 - whack
Function: noun
1 a : a smart or resounding blow; also : the sound of or as if of such a blow b : a critical attack
2 : PORTION, SHARE
3 : CONDITION, STATE
4 a : an opportunity or attempt to do something <take a whack at it> b : a single action or occasion
- out of whack 1 : out of proper order or shape <threw his knee out of whack> 2 : not in accord <feeling out of whack with her contemporaries -- S. E. Rubin>

Sara Sherr, Friday, 25 June 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ice Ice Baby" is a way better song than "U Can't Touch This" (though Hammer was a better dancer, and made better albums, and better videos, and better girl groups aka Oaktown's 357, and he had a better baseball career.). Anyway, what makes you think the appreciation of either of them is "ironic"? "Ice Ice Baby" is just a great record, period. Anybody who doesn't think so is an absolute wack.

And "Super Freak" is better than "U Can't Touch This.
And "They Put Me in the Mix" is better than "U Can't Touch This."
And "It's A Party" and Vanilla's other hip-house song (the one from *Cool as Ice*, I think) are better than "U Can't Touch This."
I forget what "Here Comes the Hammer" sounds like.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 27 June 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll also let preferring "Ice Ice Baby" to the best goddamn song ever slide because Queen's goes dee-dee-dee-diggy-dee-dee dee-dee-dee-diggy-dee-dee while Ice's goes dee-dee-dee-diggy-dee-dee DEE-dee-dee-dee-diggy-dee dee, which is totally different.

Hell, I bet Vanilla made all the same mistakes as Hammer... he just didn't LEARN from them.

Vanilla Ice actually saved and invested a lot of his early 90s money. He was good enough about it that he's still doing okay now. No bankrupctices, no selling off of the estate. He spends a lot of time on hobbies these days. He likes to travel.

Another thing that made Vanilla Ice more ridiculous than Hammer (and thus a reciever of more jokes/ironic app. than Hammer) is how he lied about his background. According to Ice, he grew up a streetwise thug in one of the worst parts of Dallas, TX. In truth, he came from a fairly nice, middle class suburb.

Well, yeah, that's Vincent Price, rapping about the funk of 40,000 years. (1982 -- not sure if that's before the Whodini track or not.) Though come to think of it Wolfman Jack was definitely a vocal influence on some early rappers (Frankie Smith, for instance, I think), and I wouldn't be surprised if there's tapes floating around with him (or Sir Graves Ghastly, or Ghoulardi, or some late night local UHF horror flick host like that) rapping about turning blue and climbing walls and staying sick or whatever.

MC HAMMER, ''I GOT IT FROM THE TOWN''
Yep, that MC Hammer. This new track from the onetime megastar cartoon rapper is destined to reside in the world's ''so bad it's good'' playlist for years to come. Attempting his umpteenth comeback, Mr. ''U Can't Touch This'' is now riding his native Bay Area's current hip-hop fad, hyphy, with a song that features passably bouncy drums and squelching synths. Thing is, while luminaries like 2Pac, Biggie, and Jay-Z progressed rap technique quite a bit since puffy pants were in style, Hammer has not really altered his pushy flow one bit. It's kind of remarkable, and kind of sad. At least listen to a snippet of the track on iTunes.

Please do.
I figured he wasn't wearing the pants, I just felt like posing the question. It's like a koan. or not.

This might bewhat went wrong with Hammer and Ice's careers, though. How much would it rule if Hammer still wore parachute pants and Ice still had the Big Gay Pompadour with designs cut in the sides? AC/DC never changed with fashion!

Marmot 4-Tay: forth-coming, my child. forth-coming most righteous champion (mar, Friday, 23 June 2006 23:15 (twenty years ago)

Did (M.C.) Hammer have some kind of speech impediment that would explain his frequent tendency to roll an "r" instead of enunciating a syllable? Like "starrrrrrd" (rolled) instead of "started", for instance? It sometimes sounded like he was just tired of rapping.

Seriously, I don't think I've EVER loved a song more than i loved "U Can't Touch This" when I was 10 years old. I would play it every day. Make pause tapes with it. Learn the dance moves. Type out the lyrics.

I would do just about anything to be once again so pure and unjaded for a song to touch me that deeply today.

1. roni
28 up, 10 down

Referred to in Vanilla Ice's beatbox song, "Havin' a Roni," is a virgin, according to Ice himself. However, the term is used often in hip hop, and is short for "tenderoni," which is defined as a "sweet girl."

I went to a Milwaukee Bucks game and Vanilla Ice was the halftime entertainment, I kid you not. Considering how cheap our tickets were it was kind of a cool surprise. He was actually pretty good!! "Yo, I don't know about you guys, but I still love the Ninja Turtles", for real. Props for doing a pretty damn energetic Ice Ice Baby too and spawning the argument about how many times he has performed that song in his life. I would say it's close to a thousand by now.

His live album Extremely Live is really quite entertaining, if you can find it. Live drums instead of the processed ones that were on the album and some real funny moments along the way. Such as Ice trying to figure out how to do sex rhymes on the fly despite the fact that half the audience are teenagers. And a really awesome/hilarious Ice Ice Baby that goes for almost 10 minutes. Plus an early version of "Ninja Rap". Plus some DJ bits that were clearly backdrops to dance routines that obviously you cannot see, but somehow made the album anyway. The 1.08 average on RYM is heresay!!
