Britney Does Vegas

Britney Spears performed in Las Vegas last night and it was broadcast live not only to two (2) divisions of U.S. troops stationed overseas, but to anyone who has HBO on their cable box.

i. Everything one might expect to look for in a live concert performance was terrible. The choreography was confusing. Britney's vocals, even though she was lip-syncing most of them, were buried so far in the mix that they became just another texture, like a backup singer's would be. The stage theatrics, including a fiery future-boat that floated and burned above the stage for her (awful) cover of "I Love Rock n Roll", seemed weird and embarrassing, and were probably more so if you saw them in person. (all this leads me to ask housemate: "what are all these people getting out of this?" He replies "they're in the same room with Britney.")

ii. Near the end of the show the whole stage starts "raining" and Britney comes out with a clear plastic cowboy hat on. The slo-mo shot of Britney standing in the rain, soaked to the skin, slowly rubbing her breasts and smiling at the audience made it all worthwhile. Waiting for Chasey Lain to begin pop career.

I had my friend tape this for me. Expect comments soon.

The shame is that I was hoping her live concert would give her a chance to rilly work the stageshow and pull a madonna.

I forgot some stuff because of that slo-mo water shot. The pornography in it was so fucking raw it must be seen to be believed. Britney creating a zone of electric lust on stage, lust with her own slicked-down body, just aching to touch her own throbbing clean- shaved fox.

Britney's BAND. Oh my lord. A more vestigial group of instrumentalists you may never see. Not really a fair criticism since the King of Poop himself has always, from the glory days till now, sported this exact assemblage of mesh t-shirt-wearin, velour pants-rockin, slap bassin, funky haircut-sportin session players. And no one is expecting them to rock anyway. They're irrelevant but still neccessary, for authenticity's sake. The kids can't quite let go of them for some reason (it is believed). Britney's band was the foldy crease at the top of an orange juice carton when everyone just uses the plastic spigot, anyway. It would LOOK wrong otherwise.

The best music of the night was during the dancer introductions. The dancers were, incredibly, awkward and uncoordinated during the little "solos" they did when their names were called. The biggest show of their life and most of them, when the spotlight was on them, looked like they'd been picked out of the audience. But the music was fast robo-electro beats, kinetic machine music. Maybe it confused them.

Neck/shoulder articulation on Britney THOROUGHLY HIDDEN. Her hair was never up. It swayed around a lot, and the left side of her neck was exposed several times, which leads me to believe that the homunculus lives underneath her right ear. Maybe they're breeding it for use as a built-in microphone—an organic bio-mic that uses Britney's body for batteries! Mecha-Xina vs. Bio-Britney! FITE!!

A bunch of my (female) coworkers went both sat. & sunday and said it was completely amazing... they were nearly speechless. But they were actually at the show in Vegas, maybe it was more impressive.

Yeah. I wanted to see her in the Elvis suit. The wet clingy Brit was nice tho.

It's threads like this that make it hard for people to believe that grown men can like Britney for her music.

I've only heard three Britney songs ever, and none of them did much for me. But the point I'd like to bring up here is this: SHE AIN'T HOT!!! She's freeeeeaky looking, and kind of makes my stomach turn-- so, what's the fascination?

Crikey!!! You make it sound like Britney's going all IDM!!!!!!

Old Fart!!!!!

She's getting there.

Has no one else seen this show? I feel like the lone ranger out here. Anyways one more reflection: besides the coup of getting the Neptunes to do Slave4U, Britney's peeps have no fucking CLUE about the music. "I Love Rock n Roll" showcases everything Britney lacks: a sneer, a pose of her own, a love of grit and black t-shirts. Her encore was a souped-up versh of "Hit Me Baby One More Time" and it was awful - if Optimo's electro mix was a perfect fit for the music and the vibe ("Yo La Britney", which included a sample of Funkytown), the ballad-building-to-chockablock- Chemical-Brothers remix she performed Sunday night was a poorly- stitched voodoo monster of styles, none coherent, none even current. If Britney's peeps think that Chemical Brothers are the wave of the future she's in bigger trouble than we thought.

Well, wasn't she supposed to have Dido writing songs for her at some point (which was one of the most horrid ideas ever conceived)? Neptunes aside, I think her handlers have been very clumsy in executing Britney's move to a more "mature" sound.

Tim Finney should become her manager, his ideas on the Britney Tithe thread sounded much more clever than her butchering of I Love Rock and Roll, Not a Girl..., etc.

The show was a gigantic oops as far as Britney the Singer is concered. Britney the Trashy Little Minx knocked it out of the park, however. I've never seen a more convincing Janet Jackson imitation.

In that case, she does that better with her body than with her voice.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I liked the Travis cover of Baby One More Time more than the electro-version...

JM, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've been wanting to find a reason to say "clean-shaved fox" for five days now. Thank you all.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Good phrase.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

do i need to point out that EVERY FIBRE IN MY BODY IS SCREAMING AT ME to prefer la brit's version of "ILRnR" to la jett's?

probably i won't: BUT I WANT TO SO BAD!!!

mark s, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Her Satisfaction cover was good. Not as good as e-mail my heart, but still. I suspect that ILR&R was the worst possible thing for her to cover. I mean, Pat Benetar is a tough act to follow.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't even know who's kidding anymore.

Sean, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Finally, a man that loves "Email my Heart". Hats off to you, Sterl!

Nicole, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I watched a tape of the show yesterday. I haven't been so embarrassed for a performer since I saw the Sid & Marty Kroft Revue Live at the Hollywood Bowl.

The lip-synch was sooo bad - I can't believe the crowd didn't tear Britney apart, leaving nothing behind but a tiny globule on the stage. Absolutley pathetic. This is not music or performance, and it only technically qualifies as entertainment.

Absolutely appaling that money was exchanged for that.

eleven years pass...

And what do you know.
