Has anyone experienced this? That's definitely pretty insane.

Update: Ian sez, "Hi, I'm not sure who posted re: Beastie Boys copy protection, but I just spoke with Mike D and their management and they wanted me to pass along that a) This is all territories except the US and UK -- US and UK discs do not have this protection on them; b) All EMI CDs are treated this way, theirs isn't receiving special treatment; c) They would have preferred not to have the copy protection, but weren't allowed to differ from EMI policy."

they should have held out on production, like Tool did.

King Kobra (King Kobra), Friday, 25 June 2004 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Thats got to be bullshit. Its EMI policy? What they just changed policy the other day did they? I mean if this was policy then i'm sure there would have been other CDs with the same problem and this is the first i've heard of it.!

all emi releases in .au for the last couple years have been copy controlled

kit brash (kit brash), Monday, 28 June 2004 07:46 (twenty-one years ago)

But having copy protection on all but UK and USA releases is a bit closing the stable door after all horses but one have bolted?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 28 June 2004 07:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe most EMI releases for the last couple of years have had copy control but it doesn't really matter cos i-tunes completely over-rides it anyway. In your face EMI!

Previously, on a Kevin Ayers thread...
Oddly, I got "Joy of a Toy" at Boudisque in Amsterdam, for a similar price (euros). Why odd, was that That one has the Copy Protection software drag. Since then, I have seen other copies in the UK and none of them have the copy prot.

The other day in CD warehouse, two copies of "Let it be - Naked" one with copyprot, one without. Now, the beatles I can see would have a large production run. Less so K.Ayers. What's EMI's policy here?

So, this would seem to be based on territory. UK ones are 'alright', european ones are copy protected.

Same here in Canada. Usually a good portion of the back cover of CDs is covered in graphics and texts about copy-protection.

EMI's been sticking some generic anti-piracy "statment" at the back of their UK CDs for some time now....
