at the Jesse Malin show

So I was at Jesse Malin's show at Mercury Lounge tonight, because he's a nice guy and his new album's nice and haters should find someone less...nice...to pick on... but so anyway, I was there waiting for him to come on, and the music on the P.A. shifted to "It's Alive" and stayed there (Jesse Malin being a big Ramones fanboy and Queens homeboy and all that). About 10 minutes later, the two youngish girls behind me:

Girl #1: I love the Replacements!
Girl #2: Me too! But 10 minutes is enough.
Girl #1: Yeah. It's just kind of that guitar noise over and over.
Girl #2: Yeah!

(and Malin's show was good, too. Rockism in motion. Well, he's better than Train or whoever.)

How did you restrain yourself from slaying those girls?

Jesse Malin is indeed a nice guy (and I do like his bar[s]..Niagara & Black'n'White), and both Heart Attack and DGeneration were wildly entertaining, but Ryan Adams' influence over him has led him down dubiously astray down the dead end of earnest troubadourism. How's his new record?

Being associated with Bryan Adams IS the kiss of death these days, no?

I like the new record better than the last one -- he produced, and it sounds more like him (Ryan Adams is relegated to some harmonies). Not DGeneration or anything, but it's noisier in parts and has a little sonic haze about it. And there's a good handful of good tunes. For what he is -- a rock'n'roll True Believer, basically -- I think he's just fine. Even his earnest stuff annoys me way less then Adams.

Is it archived?

I saw him twice around the time of his second album, but totally lost interest by the third album. But he was (as people say above) very nice, very funny and told lots of good stories and generally a good live act.

"TKO" was a great song but I generally liked the second album best.

He is such a lovely fella and this is horrible news. I spoke to him on the phone just a couple of months ago for a couple of quotes for a Lucinda Williams feature I was writing and he was one of the most charming, effervescent and articulate musicians I've every spoken to. Get well soon Jesse.

I seen him live a few times and he was very funny, good storyteller

Sorry to hear it, he is in fact a nice guy.

I saw this last night and it’s terrible. Coney Island high is prob the venue I have been to the most in NYC. When I was at college I was there prob near weekly. Just really fucking sad.
