Fugazi - They have some pretty good moments, didn't they?

I listened to In on the Killtaker last night after seeing F911. I really love how they recorded the drums and some of the more subtle guitar effects -- I think they had a envelope filter on one of those songs and it was great. Also, I love the natural feeling of the transitions on this album. What a nice happy little band.

"Smallpox Champion," yo.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 27 June 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

cha cha cha cha cha cha champion

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Sunday, 27 June 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually thought the song might be about a dance contest winner who likes waffles waffles waffles waffles waffles until I read the lyric sheet.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 27 June 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Did Fugazi like Can?

People love Gravity and Ebullition! (ex machina), Sunday, 27 June 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably more than Can liked Fugazi...

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Sunday, 27 June 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

ha "smallpox champion" was forever ruined for me when a friend remarked that it sounded like they were saying "white power"

Brendan Canty (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 27 June 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, they had a lot of good moments.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 27 June 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

they're not officially dead yet, are they? just on a long break

yyyeh, Sunday, 27 June 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Funny, I was just going to post something positing Fugazi as the most underrated band of the past 20 years. I think everything they did was great or near great, with their most recent being perhaps the best thing they've ever done (which is unique enough). But plowing through all those live CDs: wow. I mean, I knew it before, but what a distinctive and remarkably creative act. The way the songs change and evolve from disc to disc is very impressive.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Sunday, 27 June 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

small pox champion is a fantastic song. I do think they are slowly improving though. 'The Argument' is the album I like most out of the three albums I have. which are

In On The Kill Taker
Red Medicine
The Argument.

Have heard another album which was either 13 Songs or Repeater which was okay.

fractal (fractal), Sunday, 27 June 2004 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish there was a best of live Fugazi 2 or 3 CD... fuck the live shit

People love Gravity and Ebullition! (ex machina), Sunday, 27 June 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

THEY WERE SO GOOD LIVE THOUGH JON.

And the bootlegs I have of them are pretty good.. one from NYC a while back has Guy doing pretty harmony vox during the intro to "Blueprint!"

Ian c=====8 (orion), Monday, 28 June 2004 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

And someone jus' said that Repeater was "OKAY". Booloney. It's worth it just for Blueprint alone. I feel Dischord will announce a 2-3 cd live set of material soon. If we are lucky we will get to hear one of Ian's great Ianisms such as "Goodnight and if you folks are REAL punk you'll clean up your mess".

cs appleby (cs appleby), Monday, 28 June 2004 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian!!! I meant fuck the 932482842943 live cds they are putting out!!!

People love Gravity and Ebullition! (ex machina), Monday, 28 June 2004 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

i know jon. but WHY IS IT A BAD THING?

Ian c=====8 (orion), Monday, 28 June 2004 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I was listening to the argument on a road trip yesterday, and I have to say "Full Disclosure"/"Epic Problem" is probably the best one-two punch in their whole catalog.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Monday, 28 June 2004 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Who wants 32409293409234 live Fugazi sets. are Fugazi fans as dumb as Phish etc fans?

People love Gravity and Ebullition! (ex machina), Monday, 28 June 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

that's not the appeal jon. the appeal is: HEY I WAS AT THAT SHOW.

and even for people NOT at a particular show, they may be attracted to the tracklist for some reason or another.

don't be such a negative creep!!!!

Ian c=====8 (orion), Monday, 28 June 2004 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Fugazi fans are Phish fans with cred.

Dave M. (rotten03), Monday, 28 June 2004 03:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I WOULD BUY 10+ BOREDOMS LIVE SETS....

People love Gravity and Ebullition! (ex machina), Monday, 28 June 2004 03:33 (twenty-one years ago)

SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT THE GODDAMN BOREDOMS

(punch in the arm)

(thanks Ian)

autovac (autovac), Monday, 28 June 2004 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Funny, I was going to post a thread about how sometimes you just need a 'break' from bands you like. I didn't listen to Johnny Thunders for YEARS (after listening to very little else while living in my first post-college closet of a room) but recently heard So Alone again and remembered how great it was.

Same for Fugazi. All my buddies are batshit over Fugazi, even latter-day Fugazi, but since Red Medicine (which I liked), I've adopted an 'enough already' philosophy when it comes to the self righteous bastards. I haven't heard anything past End Hits (that was the one with the abhorrent "Birthday Pony" on it? Or was there one before that? See, I don't even remember)

Yesterday I was cleaning and, on a whim, I put 13 Songs on. Of course it didn't blow me away (albums you know by heart rarely do), but I did very much enjoy it, much more so after a 'break' from Ian's didactic barking and Guy's skeezy come-ons. The only revelation I had was a positive one: Much has been made of Fugazi's dabbling in dub music as of the last few records, but it seems they have been flirting with reggae all along, since the beginning - check out "Suggestion" if you don't remember!!

Birthday Pony is great!!

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Monday, 28 June 2004 07:59 (twenty-one years ago)

uhhhhhh

Player Piano Gamelan (ex machina), Monday, 28 June 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Killtaker is my favorite record of the '90s. The shows from that era, too, were just incredible. I look forward to diving into those 5,000 live CDs.

Neb Reyob (Ben Boyer), Monday, 28 June 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Were Rites of Spring really considered the parents adam and eve of emo? I like that presumption more than Fugazi (though they are the definite God-parents). Besides the producer credit on the Blonde Redhead newest what has Guy done recently? GO TEEN IDOLS. KIT.. E-mail...we love you!!!! Go 87 Panthers! Rock the Casbah!!! Wooooh!@!!

cs appleby (cs appleby), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Guy's label put out an Octis CD I think.

Roger: I'd suggest checking out Instrument. It's way way way way better than End Hits.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 05:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Guy's label is Peterbilt. They put out that pill-shaped Octis double-disc set. I wish he would put more stuff out. No idea what he does regularly, though.
Ian's doing The Evens, who played at Coachella, and they are touring now I think.
Joe Lally lives in L.A. -- I last saw him playing bass for John Frusciante at the Knitting Factory a few months ago.
I heard Brendan Canty does music for Discovery Channel shows, but that was a few years ago; not sure if he still does that.

Nice guitar interplay, terrible horrible awful nearly unlistenable earnest-white-boy vocals. yuck. This is based on listening to "13 Songs." I remember hearing Minor Threat on a DC comp way back when and wondering how the band could be so popular with such a shit vocalist.

people that prefer minor threat to fugazi after they turn 21 scare me

What album would likely cause me to change this analysis. It'd be nice to like Fugazi if possible, I guess

The Argument if anything

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

In on the Killtaker, Red Medicine, End Hits, either of the first two Eps also

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 1 July 2004 05:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you really saying that either of the first two EP's would change my perspective of Fugazi formed by 13 Songs?

ABSOLUTELY!

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 1 July 2004 07:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Just read their chapter in Our Band Could Be Your Life. Great shit. I imagine Repeater is the place to start?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 03:02 (seventeen years ago)

Repeater is my least favorite, although it has some good anthems. If you want to come at them from a more traditional punk/hardcore angle I'd start with 13 Songs or Steady Diet. If you want to come at them from a more proggy/post-punk/dub angle, Red Medicine.

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 04:21 (seventeen years ago)

Can't really go wrong though. I guess I wouldn't start with Killtaker or their last one, but those are good too.

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 04:21 (seventeen years ago)

WAHT Killtaker is only their best record!
