Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

100 problems and a bitch is one.

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe she looked like Ja Rule.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Ew.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the self-important tone of the article.

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't agree with the actions in the video, but placing your hand on someone's head and shoving them out of your way != hitting someone.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

They were friends and he was just messing about supposedly.

scg, Monday, 28 June 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet young girls still buy his records cos "he's so cute and cool". Fucking dimwits.

C-Man (C-Man), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Those blacks are fucking animals.

scg, Monday, 28 June 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn, scg. Did you find us from that NASCAR message board?

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, it was 50 Cent with a wig on trying to stir up more beef.

(xpost WOW)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Technically all human beings are fucking animals. Except the celibate ones, I guess. And the children.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Sadly, you can't even count out all of the children.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but mostly they are just fucked.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I AM A KITTY KAT MEOW!

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Did anyone read the two posts before that one or...?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, we did. We're still waiting for an explanation.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Just checking. (I agree about the explanation.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, really, ned. Sometimes sarcasm on the 'net is hard to spot but, then again, sometimes it isn't.

ben tausig (datageneral), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, if you're going to call someone else out for racism you should probably do it in a way that doesn't make YOU sound like the racist, particularly if the person you are calling out hasn't said anything racial.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

ALL RACISTS SHOULD BE ANALLY VIOLATED BY REPUBLICAN SENATORS AND THEN HUNG UPSIDE DOWN BY THEIR BALLS/FEET AND KICKED TO DEATH

*sarcasm*

..., Monday, 28 June 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I wasn't calling out anyone, just commenting on the tone of the article and the general attitudes that have surrounded this news (its been news for a couple of weeks now)(on the net at least). Also reminded of the Scat D incident and its aftermath. I guess my ILM profile isn't high enough to post shit like that, sorry.

scg, Monday, 28 June 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the lunkheaded girls who buy Eminem records need their head examined too.

[personal attack deleted]

C-Man (C-Man), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Fair enough scg; I thought you were baiting C-Man.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

My girlfriend likes Jay-Z. She says he looks nice, like a cuddly teddy-bear. This is true.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

He is a looker.

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Jay-Z but he isn't cute AT ALL.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

he has dimples!

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah jay-z is pug ugly

benito mussolinington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

charismatic larger-than-life mediocre looker in landing uber-babe shocker

benito mussolinington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

He is an ugly man, but, as Emma says, he "wears clothes well".

Beyonce, why did you fall for the millionaire Jay-Z?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Beyoncé outdoes him in terms of charisma and larger-than-life-ness as well.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 28 June 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

hitting girls for no reason = completely classic

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 28 June 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

hitting girls for no reason = completely classic

-- roger adultery (vlad62...) (webmail), June 28th, 2004 2:04 PM. (roger adultery) (later) (link)

presuming this is irony, is there a point to it?

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 28 June 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

?uestlove says he's just playing around with an old friend. and apparently that's jaz-o in the background somewhere (don't think i've ever seen a picture of jaz-o), so that might imply that the footage is not new, for whatever that's worth. jay does look mad-ish, though.

m. (mitchlnw), Monday, 28 June 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

playing around with an old friend

i deck my female friends all the time!

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 28 June 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Jay-Z refers to himself as "The black Brad Pitt" on the Punjabi MC track!

scg - don't worry, your sarcasm was evident, I thought.

Neb Reyob (Ben Boyer), Monday, 28 June 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

it's all about the dimples!

Huk-El (Horace Mann), Monday, 28 June 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG TEH FEMINISTS HAVE LOST

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 28 June 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Jay-Z:Beyonce::David Gest:Liza Minelli.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 28 June 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Shit-stirring question of the day:

If men and women are equal, why is it more reprehensible for a man to hit a woman than it is for a man to hit another man?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 June 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm picturing roger standing victorious with his foot on Germaine Greer's head

de, Monday, 28 June 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

VengaDan - who says it is? Only idiots believe that.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 28 June 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

How about women hitting women or women hitting men? Or boys killing seagulls?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 28 June 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

the video's four years old, from what I've heard.

(not that that excuses anything)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 28 June 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

wait, wait jay-z hit a seagull??

benito mussolinington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 28 June 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

THIS TIME HOV HAS GONE TOO FAR

benito mussolinington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 28 June 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Seagulls want me clapped with chrome – it ain't easy

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 28 June 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

From www.sohh.com :

"Weeks ago, a video clip featuring Jay-Z "mushing" a woman in the face surfaced on the internet. The brief clip shows Hov entering a backstage area seemingly irritated before proceeding to "mush" a woman twice in front of his entourage, who watch without intervening. Many websites have reported on the clip, accusing Jay-Z of a recent assault on an innocent woman.

In fact, the video clip is nearly five years old, taken from footage in the 1999 movie Backstage, which highlighted the successful Hard Knock Life Tour. The woman in the clip is a Roc-A-Fella Records marketing executive and the hand-to-face action is some harmless rough-housing between "close friends." This is the official word on the clip, confirmed late Friday night by Roc-A-Fella Records."

Dan I. (Dan I.), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

He really doesn't look like he's just playing around though, and the other guys around him look kind of concerned about it all.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

"Is roger fucked for being willing to hit a woman or whoever who hits him, intending to cause him harm? I don't think so."

well clearly my response is not ideally analytical.
a child or cripple hits roger as hard as *they* are able to, with the intent to hurt (remembering that if you are a sane individual you understand that a child is not able to grasp how hurting people is unproductive, that a cripple may be mentallly deficient in a similar way) and their best results in a slight stinging sensation, roger acts on his profound dogmatic credo and thwacks them in the head with the side of his hand, and, well, proceeds from there

de, Monday, 28 June 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I am certain that any reasonably active woman could beat the shit out of me (my violent psychoses aside).

Same here Dan, but biologically they're still at a disadvantage, right? I mean, the strongest man in the world will always be stronger than the strongest woman in the world (I think..?)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

MODs can we please change thread title to "Jay-Z kids around, playfully shoves woman in the face, expresses jovial attitude by looking pissed off" thx

someone with photoshop skills better get to work.

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Great, so because of those giant fucks on ESPN2, women across the globe have free license to kick my ass?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think that "hitting women = totally unacceptable" immediatley means "women hitting men = acceptable". I mean, there's more ways to get out of most situations like these than hitting back.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I miss ethan coming on to facsimilies of this thread and telling people off for racism

de, Monday, 28 June 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

haha for a sec i thought "scg" was Ethan!

Al (sitcom), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I suppose that if a woman that's obviously your physical superior tried to beat you up in a dark alley w/ no one else even remotley in the vinicity that you could call for help in stopping/restraining her you'd be justified in hitting back.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

A few people here are living in a fantasy world. Good luck defeating The Nothing and finding One Eyed Willie's treasures. As for me, I'll continute to react as a logical person.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Can we reasonably expect equality in anything if we insist on caveats like this?

A caveat like what?

oops (Oops), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

One thing that aggravates the shit out of me as a preternaturally overconfident African-American is the fact that there is a seperate set of rules and expectations laid out for me due to my skin color when I would much rather follow the rules and expectations laid out for my massive fuckoff brain. It is also very aggravating that the people most vocal about wanting equality between the races/genders tend on sight to label me as someone in need of their help when in actuality I am better than they could ever hope to be.

(xpost: "Men and women are equal but it is worse when a man hits a woman than it is when a woman hits a man because men are strong, hulking beasts of violence who think with their fisteses while women are delicate and sensitive and must be shielded and protected from everything." AND YES THIS IS RHETORICAL HYPERBOLE.)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Extending equality to things other than rights, opportunities, etc doesn't seem very logical.

oops (Oops), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Extending equal rights to opportunities seems completely illogical as well depending on what you mean by "opportunities" (or are you advocating for ludicrous example a gigantic lottery system where anyone interested in any job automatically gets their name put into a drawing for the position and whoever's name falls out of the bin gets the job?)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

(I'm trying to figure out exactly at which point I started arguing for the sake of argument and it seems to be right from the shit-stirring question.)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:21 (twenty-one years ago)

No of course not, but everyone should have the opportunity to obtain the education and experience the job requires. They should not be looked at as equally personable, driven, quick-thinking because, y'know, they aren't.

oops (Oops), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

o dear why can't Jay-Z be more like Skee-Lo?

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I got my ass kicked my a 13-year-old girl when I was like five. I cried and told my dad. Sharon. She "acted like a boy," she was a "tomboy," people said. My dad hated her guts after he found that out. I think it was just a phase she was going through, going around kicking people's asses and laughing at them. She grew up to be a pretty good tennis player and she teaches at an elementary school. I don't know what this has to do with anything except that she was bigger and tougher than me (which wasn't saying much), and I think when you're bigger and tougher than someone it just seems wrong to hit someone who's not as big and tough as you. But then it's funny, because what if the big tough guy is a striking assembly-line worker and the weak guy is a union-buster with a suit and a gun? In terms of who has more of a "right" to physical violence, strength isn't just physical strength. But I think ultimately there can't be any triage here. When you hit someone you lose the argument, no matter who you are.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually you win the argument; depending on the person you hit you've probably lost the war, though.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

it's funny because when I was in 3rd grade or so this pair of sister who lived next door, and were probably in 7th grade, were constantly slapping me around, tossing stones in my general direction as well as insults. then one day they moved, stopped by, shook my hand, and said "we'll miss ya kid". weird.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

From experience, I once dated a girl who was nuts - as in I honestly think she was insane - and two of my flatmates said they would not have been as patient as I was with her. Why? Because she took aim at me more than once and I held myself back. Looking back in time though, I think it would have been perfectly within my rights to kick her out of my room - with force - instead of telling her to piss off, which never worked anyway (she was insane, so she'd just kind of hang around or threaten to top herself or some such shit). One of her past boyfriends had smacked her one in retaliation - and as she was a violent, nutcase of a girl I really don't have any sympathy. Dan is right - if someone is intent on causing you physical harm, regardless of sex, then you have a right to use REASONABLE FORCE to defend yourself.

But, in my case, I still couldn't bring myself to hit a girl.

C-Man (C-Man), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

It isn't a good point or even a good question, David, it's simple shit that a five year old could understand. If someone hits me - a woman, a child, a cripple - with the intent to HURT me, by striking me as hard as they can, they'd better make it count.
-- roger adultery (vlad62...), June 28th, 2004.

What the fucking fuck are you talking about? Seriously? So you don't agree that it's less socially acceptable to hit a woman than it is to hit a man? You're just simply denying this altogether?

What is your fucking point even? Do you have one, or do you just want to kick everyones ass and chew bubble gum and you left the bubble gum in the car?

David Allen (David Allen), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

huh?

I didn't say it wasn't less socially acceptable - I'm just saying that's bullshit. I don't care if it is or isn't, see? I'm not governed by axioms.

For the record, lest you think i'm some sort of meathead, I haven't been in an actual fight with a man or woman in a few years. Some close calls, natch, but no punches thrown. Sorry to blow your mind.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

That's all I was saying, was that pointing out the differences in social acceptability was a good point. Fuck, you inadvertantly agreed with Dan by saying it was bullshit.

Whatever though, I imagine whenever you make a post on the internet, you first kick over a chair and do a guitar solo.

David Allen (David Allen), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Roger you need a meat hat to go with your meathead

Hats of Meat

I think C-person was saying, was that you can't necessarily 'blanketly' condemn someone who hits a girl without knowing what the situation was. That's fair enough surely. And he says he would never get to that position. Me neither.

Rog Ad says he can imagine being in that position i.e. if a girl hit him with malice, he'd probably retaliate. So he knows himself so fair enough also.

However, the initial violence of his better make it count post is more worrying.
