Songs that are so obviously the best of an artist or on an album that it's mind boggling that nobody else has brought it up

Like the fact that Variations sur Marilou is by a million miles the best Serge Gainsbourg song.

Or that "Mind" is undoubtedly the best and most memorable song on Talking Head's Fear of Music.

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 28 June 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Mmm. "Could Well Be In" is my favorite track off the new Streets. At least it was until Wifey played it out.

I think "Electric Funeral" is the best song on Paranoid

*rubs eyes. looks confused*

Scott CE (Scott CE), Monday, 28 June 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

"Eva Braun" is the best Screamers tune. No one ever mentions it, though. It's all "Vertigo" this and "That other song" that.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Monday, 28 June 2004 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and I think "Synkro" is the greatest track on Vocal City. It's just a slight notch better to my brain than everyone's fave "Tessio," which itself is stunning, of course.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"Fairies wear boots" is the one that always gets to me on Paranoid. Incredible outro soloing and Ozzy's best fear-of-god/supernatural wailing. My two cents.

drew l., Monday, 28 June 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew M. OTM about "Synkro."

David, "Mind" *is* the best track on Fear Of Music, but "Drugs" is a close second.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

And I'm just going to high five Segal on what he just said, so now we're reaching that uncomfortable "concensus" status that threatens the proposed statement. I think the thing about "Mind" is that we all *know* it's the best song there, so it's just sort an unspoken thing.

"Deceptacon" is great, but really the album's all about "Phanta".

"Venus" over "Marquee Moon" - succinct.

Dr. Annabel Lies (Michael Kelly), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd go with "Guiding Light" on that album.

Slim Pickens, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 06:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, if you guys agree about "Mind", then it MUST be the best!...despite the fact that I think it's the most annoying song on the LP and the best is either "Drugs" or "Paper"

Not only is "Panic In Detroit" the best song on Alladin Sane, it's also his best track ever.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"Mind" is clearly the best! ("Drugs" is the worst, though "Electricity" might have been close to the best)

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

ive always liked "air" best

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"Mind" is indeed underrated, though I love the album too much in its to swear its the best (peter otm re: "Air" meriting similar acclaim). I want NERD to cover it.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

and! if i were to rank the songs based on how well i like the thing in the titles, excluding "life during wartime", "i zimbra", and "memories cant wait", id have to say

1. air
2. mind
3. heaven
4. electric guitar
5. cities
6. paper
7. drugs
8. animals

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Britney Spear's "Toxic" is by far her best work yet. It combines the best of all aspects of her talent. Gotta love the musical genius that is Britney Spears!

Kyle Landgern, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Britney has yet to release a song that really showcases her dancing.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

you're forgetting "sometimes"

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

toxic gets mentioned around here a lot. i agree completely though, its her best song ever, and one of the best songs this year.

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"this year" used loosely, i suppose...

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

"Shang A Dang Dang" is definitely the best of Lambchop, and it's mind boggling that nobody else has brought it up.

"Toxic" "Mind"

MC Frosty Flake, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Er, yeah, anyway...

"Toxic" < "(I Got That) Boom Boom"

"Cities" > "Mind"

MC Frosty Flake, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

toxic is wicked but it rips off a linkin park tune big time at the beggining. Not sure which, i'm not that much of a fan.

therobj

therobj, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Umm Linkin Park is a bad example since they ripped almost all their riffs from old Cinderella and Firehouse tunes, so in actuality toxic is possible a rip off of a Cinderella or Firehouse tune. I'm so glad Linkin Park got mugged in their park. Had about enough of that the first time I heard it!
