syntax tree, recursion, geometry and inertia are also standouts so far.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

word up. this album is ffressshh.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

"recursion" is the track with the crazy filters at the beginning?? i've never heard anything like that before or since. great track.

"alternating bit" is a really great way to open the album, somehow the way he invokes the tron soundtrack makes the rest gel in a way that doesn't happen when i start it off from a random track in the middle.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't heard this in ages, but I think it's hit and miss. Too much of a stretch to make a series of "out there" Aphex-y moments. But I will take this thread to be a sign to re-listen and re-evaluate if need be.

tron¿

dyson (dyson), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"¿"?

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

tron¿

the first track is one of the main themes from tron with added beats on top. wendy carlos really deserves a co-songwriting credit on that one.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

oh cool.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Too much of a stretch to make a series of "out there" Aphex-y moments

sorry barry but i can't parse this :(

if i am reading you right, though, i think you are saying the album is too consistent??

vahid (vahid), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i think he was saying the opposite.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, that sentence was awful (excuse = I'm watching Canadian election coverage at the same time).
I'm saying that he's trying too much to sound like "The Many Faces and Moods of Aphex Twin". It's like a compilation of stuff from Aphex's many aliases, except not nearly as good.
OK, I'm going to relisten right now ...

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Never mind what I've been saying ... I have "Spectrum", not "Geometry". I've never heard the latter.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

haven't listened to this in yonks, but i loved it as a wee idm bairn

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

oh man, i've got such great memories of my friend neil driving me around sheffield and blasting out 'spectrum' at high volume, with 'bikini ski boat' being rewound again & again. i've just been relistening to 'geometry' and forgot how great it was - it came out 4 years ago, does anyone know what he's done since?

zappi (joni), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

wait is spectrum the first one? that one's twice as good as geometry.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

spectrum was '98 & geometry was 2000.

the thing i like most about doric - are those big numan synths. it works so well over that beat which over the 1st minute and a half get put together before your eyes with all these great blips & orbital-esque effects. combined with that the sound is so fucking powerful. i do wish the track would go on a bit longer before it begins ending.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought this was a good record when it was released, and I still think it has moments. I think this album captures the vibe of what was happening during IDM's brief moment in the spotlight four years ago. Pretty much this was part of the last batch of records before it stopped being relavant(to me at least).

This record is currently sitting in a plastic sleeve in a record box 1500 miles away in my mom's basement in michigan. It will be part of the record collection I drop in 2032 when this shit is considered a chic part of the pioneering independant spirit of 1990's electronic music.

I just wish the cdr's I have burned over the last couple years could have the same potential record collectors value. I mean who would not want a huge clutch of the laptop version of third rate 60's psychedelic garage rock in 2030.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi,

This thread made me find my copy of the cd. My version is the Matador promo version and there's no Doric. When I checked Allmusic and Discogs I find the track ordering given on the cardboard sleeve to be different and as follows:

alternating bit
recursion
geometry
rigid body dynamics
post mid arc
syntax tree
inertia
breakpoint envelope
binary space
static
angular momentum
motion math
subdivision surfaces

Was Doric a renaming for the official release? Does anyone have a correlation between the ordering on the promo and the officially released version?

paul c (paul c), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

according to here the promo is a bit different to the official release - Doric was remixed and renamed, some other tracks have different track times etc etc. i want to hear the promo now!

zappi (joni), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

does anyone know what he's done since?

His first new song in 4 years appears on the Planet Mu compilation that just came out. If the press release is anything to go by, they were surprised he made new music.

Vic Funk, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Zappi,

Check your email.

paul c (paul c), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd like to know what the remixed + renamed version of doric is like.

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

five years pass...

Variance is finally out! its a double too.
