1988 Hip Hop Mix CD. Help!

So, I have to make a mix CD of the best hip hop from 1988. This is for a party for a friend, and there are just a few requirements:

1. Posse on Broadway has to be the first song.
2. I have to keep it mostly clean (kids will be there)
3. All the songs have to be from an album, soundtrack, or single released in 1988.

Here's what I have so far. What am I missing? Anything on here that's not really from 88? (not sure about the Doug E Fresh track, for example. I think it's on "World's Greatest Entertainer", but I don't have it anymore and amg doesn't say) Other thoughts? (horrible transitions, e.g.) I had to make some tough choices to allow for room and to keep it clean (No Eazy-Duz It, which hurts). I also tried to keep it pretty upbeat and use well known artists. I think it sort of peters out at the end. Feel free to post your own best of 88 mix, or just criticize the shit out of mine.

1. Sir Mix-a-Lot, Posse on Broadway
2. Rob Base, It Takes Two
3. Doug E. Fresh, Keep Risin to the Top
4. Ultramagnetic MCs, Ego Trippin
5. Biz Markie, The Vapors
6. Run-DMC, Run's House
7. BDP, My Philosophy
8. Eric B and Rakim, Lyrics of Fury
8. Public Enemy, Bring the Noise
10. Public Enemy, Prophets of Rage
11. Marley Marl et. al, The Symphony
12. MC Lyte, 10% Dis
13. EPMD, You Gots to Chill
14. De La Soul, Potholes in My Lawn
15. Kool G Rap and Polo, Road to Riches
16. Eazy-E, Eazy-er Said Than Dunn
17. Too Short, Life is...Too Short
18. Ice-T, Colors

Songs I like from this year that aren't included on yr (pretty terrific I must say) mix:

One of my personal favorites that def. should make it:
Chubb Rock - Caught Up (Remix)
also:
Slick Rick - Moment I feared
UltraMag MCs - Give the Drummer Some
Stetsasonic - DBC let the music play
LL Cool J - Going Back to Cali
Eric b and rakim - microphone fiend
Run DMC - Beats to the Rhyme (my all-time fav Run DMC track)
Big Daddy Kane - Ain't No Half Steppin
MC EZ and Troup - Get Retarded
Ice T - I'm Your Pusher
KRS - I'm Still #1

but yeah, yrs is great too.

is your friend having a '1988' theme-party?

steeve mcqueen (steeve mcqueen), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Symphony" is sooooooo dope.

steeve mcqueen (steeve mcqueen), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Was MC Lyte -"Beat Biter" from 88?

steeve mcqueen (steeve mcqueen), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Was "Road to the Riches" released before the album came out, which was in '89? I'm pretty sure "It's a Demo" was in fact released as a single in '88, so you could go with that if need be.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Slick Rick and Big Daddy Kane were both close calls, but they just didn't sound right in the mix (I was using Children's Story). Did Caught Up come out as a single in 88? You're right, that would be a welcome addition. Hmmm. Must consider what to cut...

Scott CE (Scott CE), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think I know Beat Biter was it from the album with "Cha Cha Cha", (which would have been my first choice of MC Lyte tunes, but which came out in 89)?

Road to Riches did come out as a single in 1988, I am pretty sure.

And the theme of the Party is actually "Posse on Broadway," hence the first track.

*whistles*

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 05:57 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, oh yes, I found that in a search, DB, but I became overwhelmed. Looks like a great mix. I think we hit a lot of the same stuff (though we may have hit some different tracks from the same artists). So you think I have screwed anything up? Besides leaving off NKOTB, I mean?

Scott CE (Scott CE), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

'strong island' by jvc force (i think this is 1988 anyway) - what a tune!

zappi (joni), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

This mix is badly missing N.W.A.--if content is the only problem, you can still use "Express Yourself".

And make sure Eric B. and Rakim's "Follow the Leader" is on there.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I had Express Yourself on there at first; it was a tough call. It is the only NWA song that's really useable, but I took it off because it's all Dre, so I just felt like it wasn't a representative NWA track. Maybe I should stick it back on though. I took Lyrics of Fury over Follow the Leader because it has more of a party feel to me.

OH MY GOD PEOPLE DJ JAZZY JEFF AND THE FRESH PRINCE!!!!!!!!!!!! I mean, ANYTHING off of _He's The DJ, I'm The Rapper_!!!!!!!!!!!!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

"Here We Go Again", "Brand New Funk", "Charlie Mack (1st Out The Limo)", "As We Go", "Parents Just Fon't Understand", "D.J. On The Wheels", "He's The DJ, I'm The Rapper", etc etc etcetc

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I had Parent's Just Don't Understand on the mix at first, but god, after listening to it a couple of times, I just got so bored. It's really long and just drags on and on. Maybe I should put "Nightmare on My Street" on there. Sigh. This is hard.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

It's secretly all about "As We Go" and "Charlie Mack".

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

True Mathematics
K-9 Posse
King Tee
Antoinette
the 7A3

These aren't too easy to find in stores, but maybe slsk? (Scott, I can give you mp3s in person if worse comes to wurst)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG K-9 POSSE!!!!!!!!!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm. The only one of those I know is the K9 Posse. If you had to pick one, which would you say is the most party-riffic? (P.S. Warning: I may try to hit you up for that mix sometime in the future when you are not busy trying to get it out to everyone else.)

Scott CE (Scott CE), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ain't Nothin' To It", probably

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, for heavens Scott, no MC Hammer's "Let's Get It Started"?

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Granted, Hammer sounds more like he's exhibiting aggressive chronic constipation rather than rapping, but still... give the man's first album some props here...

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

arrrrgh! I totally 100% forgot about MC Hammer (not, like, his existence, it's just that his eligibility didn't occur to me) Hmmm. Glaring, indeed. This would be a lot easier if it were a 700MB CD instead of an 80 minute CD. I will re-post once I revise.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

more on the UK tip, but Bomb The Bass Featuring Merlin's "Megablast"

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

It is the only NWA song that's really useable, but I took it off because it's all Dre

The 12" version has intros on each verse from the other MCs!

kit brash (kit brash), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

EgoTrip's Big Book of Rap Lists has the top 30+ for every year since 1978 or so... slsk it.

PeterALopez, Wednesday, 30 June 2004 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

"TURN THIS MOTHER OUT" (drnt durnt dut dut dunn dun dit dit)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Talking All That Jazz - Stetsasonic.
Strong Island - JVC Force (seconded).
Jenifa (Taught Me) - De La Soul.
Know How - Young MC.
Get On The Dancefloor - Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock.
Go On Girl - Roxanne Shante.
Shake Your Thang - Salt 'n Pepa.
Raw - Big Daddy Kane.

Plus another nudge for the best hip hop track of the year:
Follow The Leader - Eric B & Rakim.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

These are doubtless on Donut Bitch's or Ego Trip's lists, but:

Public Enemy, "Don't Believe the Hype" (still startling and funky after all these years)
E.U., "Da Butt" (great one for the kids)
Wee Papa Girl Rappers, "Heat It Up" (clean, and in a British accent!)
Jungle Brothers, "I'll House You" (okay, forget this one)
Boogie Down Productions, "Stop the Violence" (funny, political, reggae bassline; why was this left off of KRS-One's best of?)
