jaysus I'm tired.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

did afx do his dj set or not? because we knew the time slot changed, then someone told me he cancelled - then the next morning (of course) someone told me he had played after all

David Steans, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

He DID play?! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was so disappointed I didn't catch him. I've been waiting nearly ten years to see him live and in that time he never fucking turns up when I go. Plaid and Squarepusher totally made up for him though. Those Plaid animations were so good - especially Super Barrio and the one with all the psychology questions in Japanese. Why didn't Super Barrio win? What has eating slowly got to do with social confusion? How the fuck did they do that CNN thing? All the same it was very poignant indeed.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I made the trek all the way from the USA for this one and had a great time. Too many highlights to recount. Can anyone tell me how the mud rated this year vs. others? Worse, average, or not so bad?

southern lights (southern lights), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought squarepusher was incredible also - we walked up a few minutes into the set, and as you approached there was just all these purple lights coming through the trees and amzing sounding harsh drill and bass and noise. as we arrived he just screamed MAKE SOME FUCKING NOISE and the place went mad. it was really menacing and exciting. he was a million times better than the last time i saw him in notts.

so DID anyone see afx play? ill be so disapointed if i missed him

David Steans, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

did fatboy/chemical brothers play as "drunk soul brother" and "london dust explosion"? their original timespace was taken up by Nick Warren, nonetheless I read someone in the tabloids saying they stole the show! I fear lazy journalist didn't bother going.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard that the Fatboy/Chems thing was moved to Lost Vagueness at the last minute. I was part of the throng standing around the Glade waiting for it to happen, and gave up after an hour of waiting. It would have been nice if someone had made an announcement over the PA.

southern lights (southern lights), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah the Ballroom, I heard, rumoured anyway?

in which case I may have been dancing to it. lost vagueness IS glastonbury, I have now decided.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

As this was my first Glasto, I spent way too little time at Lost Vagueness and way too much effort trying to catch every single band I had a marginal interest in. That will be rectified next time.

southern lights (southern lights), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Aphex over-rated as a DJ imo - would've been interesting tho

the mud/rain count was higher than the norm - not as bad as 98, possibly on a par with 97 i think, tho i was at neither of those. 99, 00 and 02 were all dry and sunny for the most part (at least when it did rain it was just damp ground and no mudslime).

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Glad to hear about the mud - if it is generally better than that, I will come back every year the fest is held.

southern lights (southern lights), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

definitely nowhere near as bad as 98. much worse than at 99/02 (both had hardly any).

i know someone who claims to have seen afx play. in fact didn't ricky t?

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Morrissey's set fwiw:

Don't Make Fun Of Daddy's Voice
Shakespeare's Sister
How Can Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel?
Let Me Kiss You
I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday
The Headmaster Ritual
Such A Little Thing Makes Such A Big Difference
There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
First Of The Gang To Die
The World Is Full Of Crashing Bores
No One Can Hold A Candle To You
Subway Train (into) Everyday Is Like Sunday
Irish Blood, English Heart

SALTMSABD was brilliant, as was most of it really. "Leave me alone, I was only singing..."

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

er, if anyone (ronan?) could come up with a partial setlist for erol in the lock tavern, that'd be great! i only recognised a few tunes (apart from the indie stuff) and there was one techno track in particular that he kept dropping in, with a sort of throbbing helicopter whump-whump-whump drum in it, that i must must must identify. it was probably very well known!

pete b. (pete b.), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

didn't Mozza play Bigmouth Strikes Again about three songs in?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Orbital's setlist iirc:

Remind
The Girl With The Sun In Her Head
Belfast
You Lot
Satan
The Box
Halcyon
One Perfect Sunrise
Impact USA - The Earth Is Burning
Dr Who
Chime

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

didn't Mozza play Bigmouth Strikes Again about three songs in?

oops no i was thinking of TIALTNGO like the ignoramus i am

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

erol setlist

mocky-mickey mouse motherfuckers (tiefschwarz mix)
paul mccartney-temporary secretary (radioslave mix)
spektrum-kinda new (tiefschwarz mix) (this could be the helicopter track you mention)
mylo-drop the pressue (as you know probably pete)
that higher state of the jealous lovers bootleg

that's all I can remember currently.

though he did play some ace track with a big shouty "JACK MUSIC ALL NIGHT LONG, JACK MUSIC ALL NIGHT LONG" sample which I myself am dying to hear.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

er....dying to hear the name of.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I saw AFX. It was a bit meh really, and I spent most of the set chatting to foax.

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Since when is Paul McCartney's nicknake Macca? And why hasn't this made it to the U.S. yet?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

aren't you more concerned about 'Mozza'?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, of course, but those nicknames filtered over here. Reading the Glasto threads, I thought that Macca was a new band along the lines of Muse, until suddenly revelation took hold. Tell me other cute and endearing nicknames of cultural idols.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Macca is a Smash Hits-ism (Smash Hits being a fantastic teen pop mag which probably has its own thread, and if it doesn't, it should) from the 80s, the full name being "Fab Macca Wacky Thumbs Aloft". Due, presumably, to his habit of being photographed in such a pose.
