Recommendations: World Music

(notice I avoided any 'Rockist' terms such as 'best', 'greatest' or 'favorite')

I'd like to to know what (non-Celtic/non-Reggae) 'World' Music albums you would recommend.

If you find some 'World Music' thats NOT from Africa, that will also be acceptable.

Gamelan
Hawaiian music (both authentic and US/European artists)

There's a great series of Latin music compilations released by Charly Records. My favourite is called "Caribe Tropical" which covers music from Colombia, Puerto Rico and Cuba. The recordings are mainly from the 1950s and 1960s and seem rootsier and more atmospheric than some of the more recent Latin recordings I've heard (but I'm no expert). All of the tracks were originally released on the New York-based label Seeco.

check out www.piranha.de, lots of interesting stuff, lots that i don't know. one i do know & like: Fermin Muguruza. he's from Basque country (not really a country, located 'around' the borders of France and Spain), and combines loads of styles in his music. a brilliant finding: mixing drum 'n bass rhythms with reggae! (after all, drum 'n bass is reggae on speed) There's an MP3 download available.

tom ze "jogos de armar" / "fabricado defecto"(or whatever that one's called)super brazilian perverted pop; huun huur tu "60 horses in my herd" throat singing & folky led zep style tunes like you want them; anything by etoile de dakar (youssou n'dour's 80's lot); tibetan buddhist stuff with the thigh bone shawms & 20 foot long bass trumpets & gongs - the "recorded by david lewiston" ones on elektra nonesuch are ace; "jegog" gamelan (the bamboo stuff) far less commonly heard than yr kebyar style. BALINESE gamelan (the javanese stuff is SO dull in comparison). most anything in the smithsonian folkways "music of indonesia" series (village variations on stuff) tanjidor music is a must as is music from the chinese community settled around jakarta. "tembang sunda" cd on nimbus - BEAUTIFUL voice & zither sundanese classical stuff - liz frazer would give up if she heard this. gnoua brotherhood of marrakesh - anything - this is R&B big steel castanets. bill laswell can fuck off. brian jones' recording of the joujouka master musicians is ace cos he majorly fucked w/ it in a lo budget psychedelic sense. madagascan (malagasy) stuff is really easy on the ears - childlike sing song melodies - there is a nice comp of dusty 78s from the 1930s on yazoo records.

also worth checking out is papua new guinean ritual flute music (for smoking banana kins / spirit world hi-jinx / teeth sharpening ceremonies) done with 6 ft long flutes that the women aren't allowed to see. just really big long sweepy wooden flute drones & breaths. each flute has a different note & maybe one or two natural harmonics. usually done in duos / sometimes more participants. lots of records available on different labels. spoooooky.
