1st McFly Now Theres...Ossett School has a history of turning out talented musicians. Several groups formed by ex-pupils have got record deals.
Now another school band, Carnaby Street, are hoping to hit the big time.
"Our bassist Mike started listening to The Beatles and thought it would be cool to start a 1960s band.
He put up posters at school. Some of us weren't too sure about it at first, but we went along and it just took off. That was three months ago.
GCSEs
We have done two gigs. We rehearse as often as we can. It's quite hard fitting it around our school work - some of us have been doing GCSEs. It's going to be a lot easier to get together over the summer.
Leanne on stage
We're got a few things lined up - an outside gig and a gig to raise money for a cancer charity. We chose that charity because most people have been affected by cancer.
We're already writing our own material and bringing it into our set. We all pitch in with the song-writing. It's a real team effort.
Popular
The 60s are really popular. We want to get well known and bring the 60s back for people. Our favourite artists include The Beatles, Dusty Springfield, Marvin Gaye, The Kinks, The Who and The Rolling Stones.
The 60s is where it all started. Have a look at your mum and dad's record collection - you'll find something you like!"

Does anyone know about this new band on Prestige, apparently they've signed a ska band now, which makes some horrible horrible sense.

Umm, some kids at school start a band. so?

Anyway, McFly's 60s influences are hideously overstated. As far as I remember, The Lemonheads and Green Day weren't recording 40 years ago.

At least they're not listening to post-Barrett Pink Floyd, ew

One somewhat suspects that the members of "Carnaby Street" have never watched BBC Four.
McFly's "Obviously" sounds like a Supernaturals single which got to number 25 in February 1997.

As soon as I read Robin's comment I knew he meant "The Day Before Yesterday's Man". It does, a bit. Not quite as jaunty though.

The Supernaturals, more than any other band, symbolise what was described at the time as "Britpop's Byzantium dying days" (Octopus come a close second, but they didn't have anywhere near as many minor hits - Octopus still deserve a mention because the only publication that gave their album a good review, as I recall, was not a music magazine but "Total Football").
