Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Do their current listings go only until July 1st, or am I missing a section somewhere?

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

what kind of music do you like?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry yeah, updates on thursdays.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I only like good music.

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i recommend Rage in West Hollywood for some great live action.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

You sly boots, Gygax.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Stop at the Abbey Pub afterwards for a quick chug.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

...not that there's anything wrong with it...

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

if time is of the essence, stop in at The Ivy or Geoffrey's for a quick bite.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Devendra, Joanna Newsom and Vetiver on the 9th...and Devendra plays Amoeba on the 8th for free.

see Jon Brion on friday at Largo?

andy, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Jon Brion????
Tell me more!

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

if you're looking for really cheap japanese fastfood, Ginza Sushiko (it's in a little minimall) might be worth dropping in.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Jon Brion, blah!

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Devendra, Joanna Newsom and Vetiver on the 9th

Hm, hadn't realized they were coming through. And that's a Friday, hm. What's the locale?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

joanna is tentative.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no children to exchange for food.

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I know little of Jon Brion, apart for his scores, which I think are great. I assume that this Largo's thing is not with an orchestra, eh?

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

My lurking here has turned up a lot of Jon Brion haters. Presonally I love his music. He plays every friday at the Largo (it's usually booked two or three weeks in advance). Standing room is first come first serve basis. Line usually starts around 8:30 and he goes around around 10:30 and plays anywhere from 2.5-4 hours. I've seen everyone from Neil Finn to Fiona Apple to Brad Mehldau stop by and perform with him. each show is pretty uneven but worth the $10 cover.

don't remember the venue for the Newsom/Banhart show, check the drag city web site?

andy, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

anyone know where dave wakeling is playing?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Go see Bant4m and the Blare B1tch Pr0ject on the 3rd at Thunderbirds.

Je4nne Ć’ury (Jeanne Fury), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

theres the concerts for kerry thing at the knitting factory in hollywood on the 7th. mostly comedians, some live music, the bands were kinda shitty and i dont remember who they were..

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a remote chance Chuck E. Weiss and the Goddamn Liars might be playing somewhere...

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Mondays are always free at Spaceland. It's usually packed and great for hipster watching, and the bands are usually pretty good.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Any ideas on what area of town to stay in. I have two days of whatever until my obligations bring me to stay in Hollywood. Something easy going. Near the coast? I know (next to) nothing about LA.

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Start the evening with an "Oki Dog Special." Then take in a movie at the Tomkat theater.
Seriously, though, the Jon Brion shows are a great time.
If you want to get a totally different vibe than Hollywood, you should stay by the coast. Somewhere like San Luis Obispo or something. But it'll probably be pricey.
Maybe go up to Big Bear Lake, which is in the woods 2 hours NE of L.A., and is a really nice time.

Neb Reyob (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

anyone know where dave wakeling is playing?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, I would strongly recommend the Kerry benefit at the Knitting Factory or catching a (usually) similar Tuesday show at M Bar.

HOW DO YOU KNOW JOANNA NEWSOM IS ONLY TENTATIVE??

The Phoenix House on the Venice boardwalk is very nice if you're a recovering drug addict. How many junkies get a free room and an ocean view? If there's a guy there from Texas named Dave, tell him his mother's looking for him. And there's local music right there, you can join the Sunday drumming circle and it's free!

If you're under-age I hear it's a great week at the Troubadour in West Hollywood. Otherwise, there's nothing that hasn't been mentioned here that strikes me. That's a fairly dry week, music-wise other than Deerhoof and Devendra.

You must eat tacos if you come to LA. Near the beach go to La Playita/Mariscos Guillen on Lincoln north of Rose. Get the shrimp tacos with guacamole. You go to the window, order and devour your bounty curb-side or in your car.

Thea (Thea), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you for that information, I must check this. Who is her booking agent, I wonder.

Thea (Thea), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, Sherlock I mean gygax, whoever you really are. Maybe Ned will tell...

Thea (Thea), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

did you know?

her cousin is the mayor of the city i live in?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 01:01 (twenty-one years ago)

My god, I had no idea. Wow. Well I guess that's why her songs are so political.

Ali is so soft-spoken and sweet on the phone I had no idea she was such a one-woman powerhouse these days.

Thea (Thea), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry peepee.

Cadillac Hotel also in Venice used to be cheap but probably isn't, these days. There is a youth hostel - very ugly - on Lincoln near Venice, I believe. Close enough to the beach to walk - just.

Thea (Thea), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Well. Ain't this a plate of shrimp!
Some good advice AND some of you know Boche!

peepee (peepee), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

buncha name-droppers. We're very LA, in LA, you see

Thea (Thea), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, so this is where all the talk is about that show.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes but I don't know Vetiver at all
