LIBS CONTINUE WITHOUT PETE

THE LIBERTINES have decided to continue their forthcoming live commitments without PETE DOHERTY, NME.COM can exclusively reveal.

The band are confirmed for a number of festivals in July, which will be their first gigs since cancelling all dates in June because of Pete Doherty’s addiction to drugs.

The band have issued a statement to NME.COM today (June 30) saying that "with regret" they’ve decided to continue without Pete.

It reads: "It is with regret that The Libertines announce they are to continue without singer and guitarist Peter Doherty due to his well-known addiction problems, specifically with crack cocaine and heroin."

Carl Barat said: "Peter is and always will be a Libertine and when he cleans up from his addictions he will be immediately welcomed back into the band.

"This decision is made with love and with no disregard to Peter and his problems. The other members of the band - Gary, John and myself - have come to this conclusion after three recent failed rehab attempts, all of which The Libertines have funded.

"Peter’s erratic mental state worries us greatly and having him on tour would only compound his problems. We aim to complete all existing tour commitments without him."

The Libertines' eponymous second album is now complete, and set for release on August 30. It was recorded with Doherty in April and May, before his health problems escalated.

The band have confirmed they will be appearing at T in the Park (July 10). The show will be followed by the Oxygen Festival in Dublin (11).

"who the fuck are they?"

The Libertines joined the pop fray of 2002, competing with the likes of the Strokes, the Hives, the Vines, and Doves with their debut single "What a Waster." The Bernard Butler-produced track entered the U.K.'s Top 40 in June, leaving NME to crown the Libertines as the best new band in Britain. The double-A side song "I Get Along" earned Single of the Week on BBC Radio 1. The Libertines, which inked a deal with Rough Trade in December 2001, is comprised of Carl Barat (guitar/vocals), Pete Doherty (guitar/vocals), John Hassall (bass), and Gary Powell (drums). Up the Bracket was released stateside in March 2003 while the single "Time For Heroes" gained momentum on the UK charts.

Pete has potential to become a hero if he carries on as he is.

Or dead.

When I saw them supporting Morrissey they were rubbish for 20 minutes, then they did this sort of punked-up mersey beat number which was absolutely great. I've only heard one recorded track - the one on the Mojo CD (The Boy Looked At Johnny, I think) and that's rubbish too.

The Libertines are so damn fucking brilliant that they make you confident in the future for UK music. I hope Pete sorts himself out.

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Me too. It seems they will play Reading after all.

i hope he sorts himself out too but after THREE trips to rehab clinics around the world, pete still cant sort himself out. that doesnt bode well for the libertines.

I've seen them without Pete (so-so) and with Pete (fecking maniacal fans, awesome atmosphere, cool as hell, Pete stage dived at the end of the gig).

John Harris rates them and British Foot Patrol as the best we have. Nuff said. [ie fuck this for a game of soldiers]

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought they had his guitar tech sub for him?

gotta hand it to pete - if youre gonna develop a serious drug problem, you might as well do serious drugs (crack and heroin).

one month passes...
Few days ago I got a promo of the new album, and it's fantastic. I'd never heard them much before...on the strength of their new one, I went back and bought "Up the Bracket." Which is good, but I really believe the new one is just a lot more interesting. I don't really understand all the indifference from people who've d/l tracks. I've become a fan.
