huge chrome cylinder box unfolding

more 'winter inthe belly of a snake'-type prettified melodies andspastic glitchy beats. consistent and dark-sounding. i think this guy keeps getting better

David Steans, Wednesday, 30 June 2004 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I think this is a step back personally. Aaron Funk releases about 700 albums a year and they're all well and good, but I wish he'd do some other stuff rather than just Gabba Drill. Chocolate Wheelchair was, for me, as good as that style was going to get while this one is just the same old Boom Clang shit that people like Mu-Ziq were doing back in '96. Songs About My Cats, intrusive as it was, showed off the VSnares' ability for stylistic diversity, but I don't think he's bothered doing anything else different since.

i dunno, i dont really think 'chocolate wheelchair' is all that much like'winter...' and this new one.they're much more dark sounding and ethereal, less instant. i like the fact that vs releases so many records...it's like you can see him developing over time, and it's certainly preferable to an aphex-style overly self-conscious hyper-controlled output

David Steans, Wednesday, 30 June 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I like the fact he releases a lot of stuff. I listened to this again on the way home from work today and I've decided it's a cross between "Lunatic Harness", "LP5" and "Richard D James Album" except with (most of) the best bits missing. The melodies are very mid-period Autechre, but I find the drumming style a bit Snares-by-numbers and the whole thing isn't as deep as any of the above three albums.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

what do you think's his best?

David Steans, Wednesday, 30 June 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

without a doubt, venetian snares' very best track ever is the doormouse megamix on ye olde barn compilation.

newnumbertwo, Wednesday, 30 June 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

'handthrow' makes panacea's entire discography sound like an iron & wine record.

harshaw (jube), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

also good: this new album

harshaw (jube), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

higgins is the only time i've been impressed by his actual tracks, rather than being impressed by his talent, if that makes any sense.

Lukas (lukas), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

is it OK to dismiss venetian snares out of hand because i think the metalhead shit is really corny??

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

when most of the positive reviews are like "you need this because it is the most violent, crazed, sick, brutal, hyper-insane noise evah!!!" and i'm like, "well that wasn't really brutal or insane, just too noisy and too fast", what reason do i have to keep listening?

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

it's OK for you to dismiss him out of hand, sure. Doll Doll Doll is one of my favorite albums released in the last five years, but you need to tolerate some very pretentious horror-movie-samples-placed-in-the-silence-right-before-the-ONSLAUGHT moments. (though some are effective, I'm scared of where the 'why, why are you doing this?' 'because we hate you.')

What I like about him is what many people hate; he often hops off the 4/4 grid and just bombards you with hyper-composed rhythmic information. You can't always dance to it, it's too prog. Some people just feel too fucked with to even bother, but I think he's onto something.

Other albums have strong moments but there isn't one I can make it through intact. I do wish he'd edit himself a bit more.

god damn I wish I could edit my posts. add 'comes from' before the end parathesis of the first paragraph.

Isn't Venetian Snares the act that made a CD out of nothing but samples of him having sex with his girlfriend?

Neb Reyob (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

that was Nymphomatriarch, a collaboration with Hecate (the girlfriend). I was disappointed.

(Jon L), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, should have included a dvd

harshaw (jube), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

He's not a pretty man

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 1 July 2004 08:08 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
I'm currently deafening myself with this album late at night on closed-ear headphones and it's incredibly satisfying. Beautiful melodies on 'bonivital', 'vida', 'Li2Co3', 'ion divvy' and more. The whole 8-bit-drums thing is a little long in the tooth now, but it's executed with such artistry and precision that I can't really fault it.

Stunning.

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 14:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Also how fucking good is the album title!!

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

eight months pass...
I haven't seen any discussion of the new one (with the Hungarian title), but I really like it! The strings sound amazing.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

And he seems to be fond of 7/4.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Bumping hopefully.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Bumping again because I still can't stop listening to this album, you unappreciative fuckers.

I bought the Chocolate Wheelchair album because I've been enjoying Rossz Csillag Alatt Született so much. It's pretty good, but the synths and wackiness are no match for the strings on the new one. Mostly it makes me wonder why he writes EVERY SINGLE SONG IN 7, WTF?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 18 April 2005 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah it is pretty good

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Monday, 18 April 2005 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, it is.

Some of it (Felbomlasztott Mentokocsi in particular) sounds Avro Part-esque. The intro track sounds like Boulez.

I'm far from an expert, but maybe he's trying to evoke some meters from Hungarian folk tunes? Is there Bartok in these tunes (I'm not familiar enough with him to know)?

W i l l (common_person), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

That's sort of what I assumed from Rossz, but almost everything I've heard now from his previous albums is in 7 as well (with a tune in 5 toss in for variety every now and then). He does it well, but damn.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, huh.

Where's the dude (I assume it's one guy) from?

W i l l (common_person), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Canada

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

he's from Winnepeg, hence his ep called "Winnepeg Is A Frozen Shithole"

Amon (eman), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

it is a delightfully eccentric record. shame about the silly "what if we were pigeons for a day?" nonsense on the inner sleeve.i wrote a review of it for an online mag, but i don't like linking that sort of thing.
