The Plastic Constellations:
Mazatlan
[2024; 8.5 | Indie Rock]

This CD is pretty solid, to rep my city.

artdamages (artdamages), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

(As usual, I'm going to regret my list in about five minutes.)

Albums:

Sonora Poncena: Back to the Road
Marcel Khalife: Caress
Spanish Harlem Orchestra: Crossing 110th Street
Youssou N'Dour: Egypt
Susie Ibarra: Folkloriko

Kind of boring list though from what I've heard of a lot of other things listed above, I think I'd like them less.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 30 June 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc your list is quite mellow.

Did you know Spin had this to say about Sonic Youth, "the world's greatest punk rock jam band, AND MORE!"

The iTunes exclusive "Peng!" by Iron and Wine ain't half bad.

...and I sort of don't love The Streets or Dizee yet. I guess I'm not gonna win any pools.

Musto, Wednesday, 30 June 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Ditty Bops are charming the way Joanna Newsom is...grows on you. Warner releas this summer.

Thea (Thea), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

oops that doesn't count, it hasn't been released

Thea (Thea), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I like lists cus they provide a lot of info in a compact format.

Lists are one of my favorite parts of ILM, because they tend to introduce me to many new artists and albums. To be honest, I could do without the pedantic bantor that often dominates ILM and the list format tends to limit all that.

So, keep the lists coming.

(I have no idea why I am writing this here, but I just felt like saying it)

Super Cub (Debito), Thursday, 1 July 2004 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's a list. I like ILM cus of the:

1.lists
2.long-winded cultural critique
3.ironic joke-cracking
4.tangential yet inspirational free-associating of music, bands artists
and
4. the plain old slangity-slang poo poo talk.

Thea (Thea), Thursday, 1 July 2004 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

My ILM list:

1. lists
2. C/D, S/D
3. music industry gossip

Super Cub (Debito), Thursday, 1 July 2004 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll step up as another total list slut. This is exluding reissues.

1. Madvillain - Madvillainy
2. Sufjan Stevens - Seven Swans
3. Modest Mouse - Good News...
4. Black Dice - Creature Comforts
5. Animal Collective - Sung Tongs
6. Noxagt - The Iron Point
7. The Streets - A Grand...
8. Sex Positions - Self Titled
9. Xiu Xiu - Fabulous Muscles
10. Jason Forrest - The Unrelenting Songs...

Sorta bland/safe, but I think 2004 has been the year of the let down whereas very little was expected of last year and I think we got a lot of surprises out of it. I'm singles stupid so I haven't been keeping track of those well enough to make a list for you.

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 1 July 2004 09:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree with Mitch actually - I couldn't even put together a satisfactory top 5 let alone top 10. I'm not depressed about it though.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 1 July 2004 10:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i stopped keeping track a while back. i could do a top 10 if i really thought about it.

benito mussolinington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 1 July 2004 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

(xpost - re Tim amd mitch)

Indeed. I was serious about my top 10 being all reissues upthread. And I'm also this year catching up with loads of back catalogue LPs from the 90s that I somehow managed to miss out on first time around. So, still lots to enthuse about.

Jeff W (zebedee), Thursday, 1 July 2004 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Strange bcz as I recall the march/april thread being full of suggestions for good releases.

3. ying yang twins - "salt shaker"
4. mya feat chingy - "fallen (zone 4 remix)"
5. memphis bleek feat. freeway - "just blaze, free, & bleek"

8. snow patrol - "spitting games"
9. mr. vegas feat. irishman - "never leave you lonely"
10. usher feat. lil jon & ludacris - "yeah"

i wish there was some way to include ilm/bloggers mixes, because my list would almost certainly include ronan's omnipotent baby mix, woebot's "brick door" jump up mix, and that "dark 2-step" mix grievous angel posted.

benito mussolinington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 1 July 2004 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

is this for real? what's it called? excuse me in advance if that was just a joke and i'm a huge sucker

Josh Love (screamapillar), Thursday, 1 July 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

that Keren Ann is great, isn't it Josh? I admit I'd never heard of her, I just filched the suggestion off SFJ's best of 2004 list

Josh Love (screamapillar), Thursday, 1 July 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

has Keren Ann come good at last, then? Her early stuff was nice, but unspectacular. And she was in danger a couple of years ago of falling in with the establishment has-beens of French popular music

I swear, I get goosebumps whenever I hear that.

Aye, it's beautiful, and I didn't even like the film.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Well done, sir.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh, I'm embarrassed by my enthusiasm now.

jaymc, it must have been you that hyped "phone call" first on one of the ESOTSM threads way back when - i downloaded it after seeing the film (which i did like) and forgot to tell you how right you were. i put it on a cd and while driving home tonight i just kept pressing the 'back' button - considering it takes about 20 minutes to get home, i must have listened to it about 20 times. i thinking while listening that i should find that thread where you first talk about it and thank you, but this will do.

whenever it comes on, it makes whatever i'm doing feel unbearably poignant.

m. (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I love tracks that do that. Superpitcher does that to me, too.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

do we have a thread about such music?

m. (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I would now add Devendra Banhart's Rejoicing in the Hands to my list.

Actually, Superpitcher makes me feel more like I'm watching everything from an exalted, godlike position.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw, Mitch, that's really nice! :)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

(I forgot I'd even mentioned it on ILX!)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

(psst - I got it after you raved about it too, though I knew the track you meant from your description. I didn't mention this before because it seemed like it might deflate your excitement at finding it on my list)

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha!

Well, I'm excited that I had an influence, then.
