"Let's start another thread sarcastically putting down bands who obviously know about good hooks and catchy songs all too well."

Next thread: "Now let's make fun of ironic elitist hipsters without batting an eye."

Slim Pickens, Wednesday, 30 June 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

sounds good to me

I thought "making fun of ironic elitist hipsters without batting an eye" was the new "sarcastically putting down bands who obviously know about good hooks and catchy songs all too well."

gspm (gspm), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

actually I take issue with that "good hooks/catchy songs" bit, having heard the Strokes' last album.

4:27 pm - Stacey's mom has got it going on
Buddy Holly has got to be the first emo singer. "Raining in my heart?" Yeah, baby. It wasn't raining in my heart today, but that was the case everywhere else. Fortunately, I am now back at the West Chester Meijer, i.e. The Love of My Life. Aside from the rain, today's shift rocked out. It turns out that Ian is not a complete tool - in fact, he likes Fugazi, Bad Religion, Floggin' Molly, Sex Pistols, The Clash, and a bunch of other stuff that I'm terribly down with. This does not excuse Ian's previously discussed shortcomings, but it's a start.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Why do you have to be so complicated? Avril Lavigne knows just how to pin me down in one expertly constructed lyric. I'm not attracted to her, but I'd like to sit with her and drink her anarchist brand of coffee (look for it in the smash hit video Sk8ter Boi...or don't). I wonder if in a cup of anarchist coffee, every bean feels empowered. I feel empowered right now. I've decided that I'm going to change myself, but still stay the same. How is this possible? Ask Helena at Great Clips. Or a Zensunni philosopher.

Erin and I broke up. I don't want to talk about it, unless I ask you to. Thanks for understanding. For those who want to tell me that they're sorry and want to make me feel better, I know you do. And thanks. You're super-awesome, and all that, and it's great that you're such a good friend. And for those who are irked at my assumption that they automatically feel sorry for me, go fuck yourselves.

I like Franz Ferdinand by the way!!

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

That one's a little old, but I'm sure you'll find enough in there to conclude that I'm a Spin-reading, Strokes-loving, "what's the new scene?" kind of indie motherfucker. Consider your argument won. I bow to your superior ability to be a jackass as well as to reveal my social security number, which is now available to anyone with five minutes, a cheap program, and an urge to be even more brilliantly hilarious.

Slim Pickens, Wednesday, 30 June 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

If you want the really good stuff, go back a couple more years to when I was 18 instead of 20. Since you're already selectively quoting, just cut and paste some more and have a ball. Then you can even selectively quote things you wrote when you were 18, which will doubtlessly reek of wisdom and intelligence.

By the way, the video for sk8ter boi is amazing. If you don't find any joy to share with others over seeing a coffee cup marked with an anarchy symbol, than you're probably the kind of person who'd rather enjoy digging up information on others for the express purposes of trying to humiliate them.

Also btw, I really appreciate you posting that breakup fragment up here for everyone. I'm also certain that any breakups you've ever had (assuming, of course, that you're not above such banal things as relationships) were nowhere near as typical and uninteresting as that one.

I like Franz Ferdinand. I like the Strokes. Trying to stereotype me is cute. It's also easier than thinking.

Slim Pickens, Wednesday, 30 June 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i really like both these bands, all the precious attitudinizing is really just white noise folks.

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

pink noise is better than white noise.

Assuming this thread is serious, The Strokes have only been around for 3 years, so I don't think anything can yet claim to be "the new Strokes."

I know this isn't really the point of the thread, but:

Out of curiosity, is there anyone who'd take Franz Ferdinand's s/t over the Strokes' "Is This It?"? The former seems timbrally uninteresting and surprisingly slow; the stuff that's meant to rollick along plods instead. "Is This It?" has memorable melodies and lots of energy.

ex machina (ex machina), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

(Insert semiotics based discussion about the "anarchy symbol" as a signifier, include some comments about the visual vocabulary of music videos and brands, wonder if Nick and Buzz like Busch Light or the Beast.)

Oh yeah, anyway, I'd be really pissed at any school dumb enough to use real social security numbers for identification, then be dumb enough to post that info on the web. Just sayin'.
...
Anyone else heard that cover of "Take me Out" in a Billy Joel style? Uh, yeah.

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Pretend that second sentence was in English, while we're at it. The pretending, that is.

mike h. (mike h.), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Derek OTM, but "Take Me Out" is pretty groovy.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't really care for it yet, but I think "Take Me Out" is doing better than any Strokes song did (and Modest Mouse is actually, like, BLOWING UP).

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

the most accurate way to describe "Float On"'s rock chart success is the sound of a slide whistle getting higher.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

ok it turns out that "Last Nite" went to no. 5 on the modern rock charts and "Take Me Out" has only risen to no. 11 so far (though that puts it ahead of every other Strokes single).

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I am pissed at my school. The only reason I didn't know about this is because I never bothered to google my email online in hopes of finding out random personal tidbits of my life that may or may not be embarassing in front of random members of an online music discussion board. Believe me, I know them ALL (even the ones that involve humor drier than a burnt tree stump being interpreted as seriosness - I once had someone ask me about a sarcastic column that advocated beating people with hardened sticks of salami if they were tardy to class, "Is this true?")

I guess that's just not my definition of hilarity.

Moreover, ¥¤±²£¢Ð¼æ®ª«¶Þ÷³¹ß½Øש§¾¿¥¤±²£¢Ð¼æ®ª«¶Þ÷³¹ß½Øש§¾¿¥¤±²£¢Ð¼æ®ª«¶Þ÷³¹ß½Øש§¾¿ (hereafter referred to as "chk chk chk" for my personal amusement) either had to notice my SS number and still post the link, or simply miss it out of sheer stupidity. The latter makes him a moron, the former a malicious fuck who disregards any sort of privacy in order to get cheap laughs. You make the call. Or we could get to discussing music.

And, oh yeah, I like the Postal Service. Especially the Shins version of "We Will Become Silhouettes," because if I get to name-drop two indie bands in one 'graph, I'll get more street cred on makeoutclub. Right?

Slim Pickens, Wednesday, 30 June 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

"Last Night" was on daytime American MTV quite a bit when the video first came out, but this was within the first month or 2 after 9/11/01 in which they weren't playing reality shows quite as often. The point is that they played it a lot, and I have yet to see Franz Ferdinand on daytime MTV.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 30 June 2004 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"ferdinand are the new hives"

i say this in earnest, not in the spirit of irony or elitism. maybe xenophobia

Am I naive for hoping FF can maintain this success ?

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

ferdinand are way less fey than orange juice (this is not a good or bad thing, just a fact). they are way less gay as well, i suspect. but who knows.

that sounded very chuck eddy.

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 1 July 2004 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a strong dislike for all the bands "slim pickens" is talking about but furreal the internerd stalking has got to go.

djdee2005, Thursday, 1 July 2004 03:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i didn't see the SSN, but the dude does have a livejournal and a weezer shirt... come on lighten up

blame your school for putting the SSN up. it is HIGHLY illegal because of some education privacy law

¥¤±²£¢Ð¼æ®ª«¶Þ÷³¹ß½Øש§¾¿¥¤±²£¢Ð¼æ®ª«¶Þ÷³¹ß½Øש§¾¿¥¤±²£¢Ð¼æ®ª«¶Þ÷³¹ß½Øש§¾¿ (ex , Thursday, 1 July 2004 04:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I do lighten up...I just don't see the hilarity in a livejournal, a weezer shirt, and a preference for the Strokes and Franz Ferdinand adding up to anything. Do you know me at all? Do you know anything about my life besides some stupid ironic entries I made a year ago? I find it interesting that you either assume a certain stereotype and try to mine it for laughs, or simply actually believe that I'm that easy to figure out.

Thanks for trying, though.
