Farrell because of not sucking toilet roil.

David, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What was the deal with the video footage of Farrell declaring himself to be Satan and injecting heroin(?) into his penis? Was that lies?

Taking Sides: Being Shot In The Face With An Uzi or Being Impaled On A Sharp Pole By Vlad The Impaler?

Ally, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually scratch the sucking on a toilet roll comment.

David, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, that footage is real. As well as the one with the drug-fueled rape

Alacrán, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Drug-fueled rape, you say?

David, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ugh, they're both pretty bad. Maybe the young, thin Kiedis for at least being cute and seeming like a nice person... Perry Farrell may be my all-time least favorite person in rock.

Sean, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ally speaks a certain form of wisdom here. When it comes to their respective bands, though: Jane's = glorious messy explosion; Red Hot Chili Peppers = damp fart in face.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't think I've said this in ILM before, so let me do so now: Jane's Addiction were a load of garbage, and Perry Farrell was a dreadful singer and pretentious bandleader.

Sean, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Um, Ned, no, because, um, listening to Jane's is like, well, slapping yourself in the face, really. At least the Peppers have learned to write songs that aren't "funky".

David Raposa, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And all that Perry Farrell "footage" is from _Gift_, isn't it?

David Raposa, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

At least the Peppers have learned to write songs that aren't "funky".

Indeed so. Now they are "sucky."

Let me also say that I've seen both bands live (Jane's in the original lineup, not the later travesties). Like I said above: Jane's = gods; Peppers = fuckups.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And Ned, if you think you're gonna put your weird interweb mojo on me and get me to like Jane's like you've done with other bands in the past, it won't work! Don't even try! I'm immune!

Sean, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

First Ally accused me of wizard words, then Nitsuh imagines me in robes, then this. But I like the idea I have this MAGICAL POWER. Give in, give in! And buy me booze in December.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

*Stumped*

Head... hurts.

Andy, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

NeD SeZ:

Red Hot Chili Peppers = damp fart in face.

Would that I had such a way w/words. I saw JA 3 times. 3rd time, they sucked & were blown off stage by Primus (yes, I know), but the second time was probably the best gig I've ever seen. Red Hot Chilli Peppers suck most massively, and will not be found in this house, ta very much.

Norman Phay, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Can't we have them simulataneously having sex with each OTHER?

Nude Spock, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think I'm the only ILM poster who likes both Jane's Addiction AND Red Hot Chili Peppers. Chances are I'm the only one who likes RHCP, but anyway...

The Chili Peppers have a permanent pass in my book solely because of their first three albums. Jane's have a permanent pass because of _Nothing's Shocking_, "Three Days", "And She Said" (quite possibly the finest music they ever recorded), and "Of Course". If I had to choose based on bands, I'd have to go with Jane's because those songs are much more essential to my life, but by frontmen alone I have to go with Kiedis because Perry Farrell is a fucking moron who thinks he's the SMARTEST MAN ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH, something which is a particular peeve of mine that makes me wish that I had an extra 20 years in my life that I could spend kicking him in the ass with steel- toed boots.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I found Californication charming , not deep but charming . parrells new found judaism makes my skin crawl.

anthony, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd take Jane's over the Peppers in a heartbeat, but watching Perry embarass himself at Tower Records "spinning" while surrounded by "dancers" who smoked and drank wine and tried to be sexy, was a sad sight indeed.

WE CANNOT CLING TO THE OLD DREAMS ANYMORE.

More seriously -- Dan, you're not alone, as Brian is also a fan of both. Feel love. :-)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Had a Dad" >>>> everything I've heard by RHCP put together.

sundar subramanian, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Perry, based on what he's done and because it's possible to imagine him again producing something worth listening to. Plus rediscovered Judaism is cool as hell.

dan, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

For a second, I thought Dan was talking about me. This means I have to pick Perry Farrell.

Dan Perry, Sunday, 25 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

nine years pass...

I would like someone to describe the chain of fx and eq that is happening on the classic perry farrell vocal performance

Dominique, Monday, 21 February 2011 04:45 (fifteen years ago)

A fair amount of Delay and the Vocals at least triple tracked in the studio, around the time of Porno For Pyros he started using some sort of subtle pitch shifting/chorus effect that made his voice sound a little like a harmonica in places, glad he stopped using it.

Run Westy Run Megatorrent (MaresNest), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 12:04 (fifteen years ago)

Definitely Perry Farrell. I've always liked him. He's distinctive.

Touch of Death, Thursday, 24 February 2011 03:56 (fifteen years ago)
