Taku Sugimoto's Italia

Anybody Heard this? It's a set of guitar solos but rilly rilly quiet (with a couple of loud bits- well, they seemed to be but, on my first listen yesterday, I had to turn it up rilly rilly loud, so I don't actually know whether it was rilly rilly loud, i didn't alter the volume to find out).

The amazing thing abt this is that it was a live gig.

And what do I think: I was surprised I didn't fall asleep (since it was midnight and I was absolutely exhausted).

Yes I have it. Definitely one of my albums of the year.

If you think this is quiet you haven't heard Radu Malfatti's recent stuff, which makes "Italia" sound like "Arc-Weld."

d. toop's review in a recent wire surely has me curious, but i still can't help wondering if all this near-silence (sugimoto, gunter, powelchisel, etc.) doesn't = the near-beer of music.

Bob- Comparison with mazzacane is fair enough. They both work placing their guitar sounds within silence. But of course they have different influences.

Mazzacane= Blues Sugimoto= Bailey/Rowe (especially rowe)

Marcello- Any recommendations on Mafaltti to start with- hoppefully I'll be able to track it down.

Jess- the only way to find out whether this stuff is any good or not is to get a copy. I seek this stuff precisely because I am curious about it.

well , taku is strongly influenced by the italian composer giacinto scelsi ,similarities are evident . the first time I've heard gunter I thought he was a brilliant composer and that's what I still think bout him but the rest ? I got bored with zenlike approssimations to complete silence ie :francisco lopez is doing the same stuff over and over and I think it won't take very much before his followers will get bored.
