Songs you objectively know are a bit rubbish but absolutely love.

I have lots of these, but the one I've just been listening to is:

"Hero" by Chad Kroeger and some other hairy bloke.

It's nonsensical, Big Rock Ballad guff of the first order, but I find it genuinely stirring. That quiet midlle-eight bit gives me the shivers.

Wooden, Thursday, 22 July 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"nonsensical, Big Rock Ballad guff of the first order" = a subjective judgement, no? [/pedant]

Jesus, Zeb, i try and unburden some of my secret shame and you get all clever on me. I might be forced to listen to it again now.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 22 July 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

The Archies, "Sugar Sugar"

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 22 July 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Phil Collins "Against All Odds". Some neo-shoegaze band needs to cover this song, pronto. I feel strongly that this would be a good fit.

I also professed my love for Westlife's version of "Mandy" in my Focus Group X comments. Perhaps it is best that those words never see the light of day.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 22 July 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

the postal service have covered 'against all odds'. it wasn't much of a stretch.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 22 July 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I've thought of another one: 2 Becomes 1 by the Spice Girls. I've always thought that would make a fantastic punk song;

Cockney lead singer: I need some luv like I nevah needed luv before!!

Cockney backing shouters: Wanna make luv to yeh Babee!!!

Wooden, Thursday, 22 July 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I would argue that "Sugar Sugar" has no rubbish in it.

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 22 July 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

And that would make me happy.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 22 July 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"Still of the Night" by Whitesnake
"Sister Christian" by Night Ranger

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 22 July 2004 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh! Anything by Rammstein. Especially the psuedo-wagnerian keyboard bits. Amazing.

Wooden, Thursday, 22 July 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

"Sister Christian" by Night Ranger

Oh man, so OTM. Some of the greatest drum fills in rock history.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 22 July 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"Sugar, Sugar" is one of the finest musical moments ever. It does not belong here.

frankE (frankE), Thursday, 22 July 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Every Kiss album up through and including Dynasty.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 22 July 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, scratch "Sugar Sugar." I may have misunderstood what this thread was asking for.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 22 July 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

That's okay, I started it and I don't really know. I just wanted to feel important, you know, be a big shot.

Wooden, Thursday, 22 July 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

"Sister Christian" by Night Ranger

how much of this is due to its utterly sublime use in Boogie Nights?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 22 July 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

"I Touch Myself."

shookout (shookout), Thursday, 22 July 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

A recent song that I wouldn't say I "absolutely love", but that I enjoy while all my friends tell me I shouldn't is "The Reason" by Hoobastank. There, I've said it! I hope I'm still allowed to come here?

Seb (Seb), Thursday, 22 July 2004 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Rock You Like a Hurricane by the Scorpions.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 22 July 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

i get a little weepy over the housemartin's "flag day"

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 22 July 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

"objectively know"

g--ff (gcannon), Thursday, 22 July 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I knew this would happen sooner or later. Oh well, it was fun was it lasted... *Sigh*

Seb (Seb), Thursday, 22 July 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

America, "A Horse With No Name": Idiotic lyrics ("The heat was hot", worthy of Ed Wood), simplistic music (non-guitarists can learn it in 20 minutes), lazy singing (a sub-Neil Young whine of barely more than two seesawing notes), and just a general air of ridiculous pseudo-profundity that supposedly inspired the witty Randy Newman to describe it as "a song about a kid who thinks he's taken acid." By no means is this a great song, probably not even a good one. Yet I never shut it off, and I'm old enough to remember hearing it for the first time as a preschooler, when it was first released. (My dad liked it.) Just little things make me love it. The gentle swing of the congas and loping bass. The cluster of harmonized guitars during the break. And a neat bit of vocal arranging by the trio: The lead singer sings the first refrain solo, then he's joined by one bandmember for the second chorus, then after the third and final verse all three of 'em harmonize. And their harmony singing is kinda nice.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Thursday, 22 July 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

phil collins - 'in the air tonight'.... just for "the drum fill". i used to listen to it when i was younger to get pumped up for basketball games.. :D

6335, Thursday, 22 July 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

America, "A Horse With No Name"

It was a great relief to me when I walked into the jazz section of a local store and found an employee singing along to this song, with no apparent irony at all. This employee happens to help run an avant-garde jazz series which has brought people like Peter Brotzman to town, for petesake.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 22 July 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

(And he's not a fey white indie kid affecting a taste for free jazz, for those who think that way, since for starters he's neither fey nor white, and his first love seems to be jazz, though he's certainly pretty eclectic.)

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Thursday, 22 July 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

If you absolutely love the song why is it rubbish?

artdamages (artdamages), Thursday, 22 July 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Because you've got your credibility to think about.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 22 July 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

The lead singer of Taking Back Sunday or whateverthefuckthey'recalled says in the latest issue of Kerrang! that he really likes cheesy, unfashionable music like Justin Timberlake.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 22 July 2004 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

That is really so confusing on so many levels.

artdamages (artdamages), Thursday, 22 July 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I was listening to "Total Eclipse of the Heart" on my Ipod today in the gym.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 22 July 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

sweet - fox on the run. i loved it almost 30 years ago. i know it's rubbish. but i don't know if i still like it.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Thursday, 22 July 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"Love is Like Oxygen" craps all over "Fox on the Run".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 22 July 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

god help me, but the radio in my car convinced me that I actually like "sex and candy" by marcy playground.

xpost - Fox on the Run is objectively GREAT!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 22 July 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

as is "band on the run".
remains me of being 5 or so years old, early music memories.

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 22 July 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Ditto "Fox on the Run," and I'd like to especially suggest the brilliant (terrible, and magnetic...) MOVIESTAR by the band HARPO.

i can't decide if scooter are utter shit or absolute genius.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Thursday, 22 July 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Absolute genius, in particular "The Logical Song" and "Nessaja."

Wooden, Thursday, 22 July 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Logical Song" is not rubbish its just a great song.

artdamages (artdamages), Thursday, 22 July 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The lead singer of Taking Back Sunday or whateverthefuckthey'recalled says in the latest issue of Kerrang! that he really likes cheesy, unfashionable music like Justin Timberlake.
-- Dom Passantino (juror...), July 22nd, 2004.

What an iconoclast! A real go-against-the-grain type he is!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 22 July 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

on old ilx the notion of an "objectively rubbish" song wouldn't have lasted three posts. What a travesty this thread is.

Musical Bear, Thursday, 22 July 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess people have got tired of being pissy.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 22 July 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Not "pissy," just "not enamored of 19th-century fallacies regarding objective truth in art"

Musical Bear, Thursday, 22 July 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I agree. It's just after a while one gets sick of getting argumentative with people who seem wedded to the 'guilty pleasure'/'it's good but I don't like it' thing.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 22 July 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, definitely agree with "I Touch Myself" as well as "Pleasure and Pain".

I always hated that drum fill on "In the Air Tonight"...it was the worst bit of the song to me because it was massively over-produced.

Ian Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Friday, 23 July 2004 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

it is evident based on most of the choices posted that very few of you have ever heard the Nasa song I referenced, as you would never list "Africa" or "Torn" in the same category

meisenfek, Thursday, 9 December 2010 09:07 (fifteen years ago)

I don't see what's stopping you. It's pretty easy to find on CD these days. I think there is a neat two-fer pack that includes both albums on one CD, though they have to edit a few songs for length. I realize you must think there is like a 5% chance of the album actually being good, all I can say is hey, I like it... :)

frogbs, Thursday, 9 December 2010 13:04 (fifteen years ago)
