Has this been chewed already? If not, what to look for in the candy store? (Excusez moi pour mon terrible Anglais, I am a six year old Archies fan who also digs the Cowsills and the Partridge Family.)

Search - Homer Simpson's rendition of Yummy Yummy Yummy by the 1910 Fruitgum Company (at least I think that's what they were called).

Damian, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Archies are the champs. I am esp. fond of their "Waldo P. Emerson Jones' song. Also gd - 1910 Fruitgum Company and Kasenetz-Katz Super Circus.

Andrew L, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just for today, "Melody Hill" by The Archies is best song evah.

More seriously, everyone from The Lemonheads to Britney Jo Spears gets called 'bubble gum pop' these days, so are you only interested in pre-1972 music(k) or what?

Jeff W, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Brigitte Bardot (pre-1972!)

erik, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Shadows of Knight - Shake!, Kasenetz-Katz - Quick Joey Small, The Equals - Baby Come Back, Andy Kim - Rainbow Ride, Tommy Roe - Dizzy, Tommy James & The Shondells - Draggin' the Line.

fritz, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jeff, no, I am interested in all things bubbly. From the Archies to New Edition and Spice Girls, I like it all.

helen fordsdale, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Giorgio Moroder-"Son of My Father" and "Looky Looky" and "Moody Trudy", Lance Link & the Evolution Revolution, 21st Century Girls, France Gall-"Baby Pop", Redd Kross - "Bubblegum Factory", Chinnichap, the Rollers, "Captain Groovy and His Bubblegum Army", Silicon Teens, Derek-"Cinnamon", Depeche Mode-"What's Your Name", John Fred & His Playboy Band-"Judy in Disguise", Vanity Fair-"Hitchin' a Ride, Middle of the Road-"Tweedle Dee Tweedle Dum" and "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep", The Quick-"Hillary", Milk 'n' Cookies-"Little Lost & Innocent", Kim Fowley-"Motorboat" and "25 Hours a Day", the Speedies-"Let Me Take Your Foto".

Arthur, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I mean, "edited by Kim Cooper and David Smay".

Arthur, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If you want to hear bubble gum music(k) being destroyed listen to "The Residents Present the Third Reich 'n Roll".

Mark Dixon, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm sticking to the British stuff:

"Freedom Come, Freedom Go" and "Storm In A Teacup" by The Fortunes, Stephanie De Sykes's "Life Is A Beautiful Book", Marmalade's "Cousin Norman", Daniel Boone's "Beautiful Sunday" (oh GOD), The Tremeloes' "Here Comes My Baby" and "Suddenly You Love Me", "I've Got You On My Mind" by White Plains, Butterscotch's "Don't You Know", Mr Bloe's "Groovin' With Mr Bloe", "Beach Baby" by the First Class, and "Now Is The Time" by Jimmy James and the Vagabonds. All works of genius (or something close to it), shining a light on a country long gone.

Robin Carmody, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No chance of you knocking up an article on this stuff is there Robin?

Tom, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

if you wish to hear the residents being destroyed listen to any other piece of music made by anyone evah, even ub40

mark s, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, Robin, I'd love to read your thoughts on the Golden Age of British Bubblegum. I don't know nearly as much about it as I'd like, haven't heard half of the records you mentioned. Tell me more!

Arthur, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom / Arthur, I've had a long enough break from writing now and I would be interested in doing an article on some of the records mentioned above. As you say, it doesn't get people talking about it the way US bubblegum (which I know comparatively little about) does, but for me the whole "cottage industry" aspect of it is far more fascinating.

I did go into greater detail about some of those records in the "Ghosts of Bubblegum Past" thread about six months ago, if you can find that.

Robin Carmody, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well I can't, no matter how hard I search. Has it been deleted?

Robin Carmody, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There's this great comp I burned from my friend Eric that has some crazy joys, this one nutty song called "Amarillo," I think, certainly made sense at about 4 am going down the highway in California's Central Valley so we could get to Seattle on time.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There was a four-volume series on Varese Sarabande, which had a very liberal interpretation of "bubblegum" (including people like Bobby Sherman) - they even had a "soul" bubblegum compilation. There are other compilations here and there, which you can pick up for less than $10 in a bargain bin. Collectables has some rare b-gum stuff as well. But if you've got vinyl capabilities you can really clean up - you'll get all the stoopid b-sides, etc. For a hardliners' take on bubblegum, see this fun site.

Kerry, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned: that'd be "Is This The Way To Amarillo?" by Tony Christie, which is a little brassier and more MOR than my blueprint (something very specific and almost never articulated by writers then, since or now) but good fun nonetheless.

Robin Carmody, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

(i really really doubt it's been deleted, robin: even if it turned into a hideous flamewar when yr back was turned, only the flames wd have been taken out...)

mark s, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

K-bingo

mark s, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cheers Mark. Was wondering where it had got to ...

Robin "Anal Bubblegum" Carmody, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

some of the best bubblegum:

1910 Fruitgum Co. - all the albums except the last one (hard ride), easy to find but there is a recent compilation that should do you fine.
Ohio express - same as 1910, more garage rock sound, there is also a recent comp, both of which are released on the new(ish) Buddha records label.
Andy Kim - Baby I love You and How'd We Ever Get this way - great lps, may be easy to find, n/a on CD though. He was one of the primary songwriters for the Archies
There's much more worth checking out but you might do well with the Bubblegum Classics CD series

g, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was especially amused to learn that Neil Bogart, who worked for Buddah Records, went on to establish Casablanca Records (something like that anyway). From Bubblegum to Disco, a small step.
And let's not forget the Japanese bubblegum: J Po(o)p. URGH.

helen fordsdale, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What does 'Bubblegum' mean here?

the pinefox, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Lemon Pipers - "Green Tambourine"

I would think Rhino would offer a bubblegum compilation.

nickn, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe this doesn't count--but someone up there DID mention Redd Kross, so I'll say Shonen Knife...

I mean, come on, "I wanna eat chocobars"???!!? That's gotta be somewhat bubblegummy.

cybele, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Got any room for the 1910 Fruitgum Co.? They were my fave raves back in my early teen years and have left a lasting impression on me. By the way, does anyone know what Mark Gutkowski is doing these days?I've been on this quest for the past several years and have come up empt- handed. Any info. would be of immense help.

Nancy Wythe, Sunday, 28 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)
