we did this a long time time ago, but the threads below on the rheos and sloan were interesting, so let's do it again..

canada--classic or dud.

godspeed vs sloan vs celine vs erics???

new answers, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

early - mid 70s Joni - classic same time frame for Neil Young - almost classic (he's from there isn't he?) godspeed - more interesting than I'd first assumed from the mp3s I've heard celine - well, every generation seems to need some mawkish singer or other...

philT, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Mid 60s Montroel Folk Scene , Glen Gould .
Our Rep is set !

anthonyeaston, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anyone remember a Vancouver band called Perfume Tree? They were doing chilly trip-hop in the late 80s way before anybody, then they just seemed to disappear completely.

dave q, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gil Evans, Rheostatics, Lenny Breau, Shotmaker, Skinny Puppy, Simply Saucer, Nihilist Spasm Band = classic!!!

James Annett, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Viletones! And Rufus W.

Arthur, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Annihilator!

james, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The New Pornographers. Saw 'em last weekend and they put a great big smile on my face. And, along the same lines, Destroyer. Plus let's not forget the completely charming Pest 5000 and Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet.

Douglas, Friday, 23 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What a question. Just read these lines:

On the back of a cartoon coaster
In the blue TV screen light
I drew a map of Canada
Oh Canada
With your face sketched on it twice
Oh, you're in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter and so sweet
Oh I could drink a case of you, darling
And I would still be on my feet

Canada is more classic than almost any other country (except Scotland maybe) in the world. Besides Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Godspeed you have the Cowboy Junkies (if there is dope music this is), Mary Margaret O'Hara and Leonard Cohen. Lyric wise Mitchell, Cohen and Young do not have to fear anyone. Not even Bobby Zimmerman.

C'mon, people, you are sending boys to do a man's job.

Handsome Ned

Might I know more about these paragons of worth?

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Y'know... I'm really digging that new David Usher tune. Moist is actually a fantastic live band I found out. Until then I'd been under the impression that their sound was pretty overproduced - but it's all there. Ironically, Sloan (playing the same night) was quite the opposite.

Also, although it's seldom mentioned anymore, and quite gimmicky, Spookey Ruben's first album is still one of my favourites.

Kim, Sunday, 25 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Brazen Hussies. Well, 1/3 of them anyway.

dave q, Sunday, 25 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They dumped Bryan Adams on us but Canada was also the home of The Kids in the Hall. I'd say classic only because of the Kids.

Lindsey B, Sunday, 25 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Weights and Measures

This is easily the worst band in the world (and two other planets).

Vic Funk, Sunday, 25 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1) Handsome Ned was a country folkie act. I was too young to catch his residency at the Cameron House. A friend had The Name Is Ned (which is on EMI the AMG tells me) so it should at least be at least an import. Also according to 'Have Not Been The Same' (wonderful book on Canuk Rawk 85-95) there is a second release called the Ballard of Handsome Ned.

2) Wieghts and Measures + North of America = Wieghts of America => Super Classic.

Mr Noodles, Sunday, 25 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There was some Southern rock band called Ned in the early seventies as well -- had at least one album, which I have around for kicks.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 25 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How old are you, Mr Noodles?
Obviously, Canada is dud but Montreal is ace!
I'm heavily into The Dears right now, who are rightfully hyped. Again let me mention my utter love of "C'Était pour la Passion", which you should all go download immediately.
Jean Leloup, obviously. "Les Filles à Canon" -- Pussy!
BV3, incidentally. From Toronto, the Mango Kid himself, Danko Jones! Get "My Love is Bold" right now... It's the one whose chorus goes: "Hot woman!/Hot night!", so you know it cant be bad... And what about Kid Koala!

Simon, Sunday, 25 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nomeansno goes without saying, Neddy. As do SNFU. And Me Mom and Morgentaler. I'm just going to sit the rest of this one out, because I've already been fighting too hard in the other threads.

Sean Carruthers, Sunday, 25 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dang for got Kid "I Gotta Rock!" Koala. The Dears hyped?!?!? Sweet, they have a great album out. Buck65 oddly enough has a song about Penis, which is nearly as hilarous as Momus' Penis Song.
"Im a Cenutar, ugly man but a horse from the waist down" or something equally corny.

My favorite aspect of Danko Jones is how (another band I forgot) The Smugglers stole his pants and wrote a song about them. They truely do deserve the title of Canadian Amb-ass-adours of rawk. Flying Butress of Love, Rock N Roll Was Never This Fun etc.
Me? Im a wee 23 whose thirtysomething brothers did not let him touch the record player. So thats why I was not allowed to go to a bar at the age of seven, nor would I want to. Heck my family freaked out years later when I finally did go to the Cameron (Julie Doiron was playing) fearing Id fall prey to some sly pusher or something. I didnt find out about Handsome Ned till a former friend of mine flew out the folkie closet two years ago (due in no small part to her folkie bf) and we have been at eachothers throats ever since.

An dHalifax rawks just as hard as Montreal, its Poutine vs Donairs! (mystery meat. mystery sauce. but magical when intoxicated).

Mr Noodles, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What about the Day Glo Abortions?

cybele, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

What about em?

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 26 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Didnt they do an album last year? Even wierder was seeing a release from Forgotten Rebels.

Super Bonus Question: Who the hell were Cats Can Fly?

Mr Noodles, Tuesday, 27 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Tea Party. Destroy.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 28 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cats Can Fly were one of those bands manufactured real quick when Canada found itself with its own MTV knockoff, and the state- subsidised industry needed some product to push. See also Glass Tiger, Big House, Boulevard, etc. Canada has the highest ratio of shit-to-bearable bands of any country ever.

dave q, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just like 8 Seconds singing "Kiss You When It's Dangerous" with buckets of water being flung about that were supposed to look like rain? And don't forget those sensitive mullet heads - Frozen Ghost, or the Northern Pikes, or Chalk Circle, The Box, or Haywire. That shit is forever tho. Did you know that Frozen Ghost still gets played at weddings every single weekend? How scary is that?

Kim, Thursday, 29 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You know what? I actually kinda liked Eight Seconds, but only before Rupert Hine got his hands on 'em. They did some 4-song EP with "Where's Beulah?" that was actually not bad, in an 80s electropop kind of way.

Sean Carruthers, Sunday, 2 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I could listen to Teenland a fair bit but no way Im going to defend most of their last album. I still think its amazing that Sloan are cult band outside of Canada but the Rheos arent.

Mr Noodles, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Glass Tiger & Serial Joe

Oh Newmarket, so much to answer for.

chad (chad), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 18:34 (twenty-three years ago)

i know it's been said before but i gotta say it again:

do make say fucking think!

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 18:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I second what fields of salmon says, indeed. &yet&yet is sooooo fucking good. although i'm thinkin lately "goodbye enemy airship..." is a bit better.

chad (chad), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 22:16 (twenty-three years ago)

do make say fucking think!
They would be better if they wore more [p]leather pants. It would be a bit of a fasion bizaster though.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 01:53 (twenty-three years ago)

If bizaster isn't a real word, it sure as heck should be.

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 03:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Its a perfectly cromulent word as far as Im concerned.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 14:39 (twenty-three years ago)

any photographs of dmsft's current lineup will prove that trumpeter-boy proudly wears [p]leather trousers all the time (the year-end-round-up photo of dmsft in exclaim that appears to have been taken at the union chapel confirms this). and when i saw them in october, yup, he was wearing them. it's really sad because he obviously wears them all the time to accentuate his genitalia and make some female friends after the show. the sadder thing is it probably works. and the even sadder thing is that those trousers probably smell REALLY bad after a few days' touring.

maybe i'm just jealous because i don't have any [p]leather trousers to wear onstage.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 17:39 (twenty-three years ago)

but anyway, here's the real shit:

who has heard fly pan am's newest one "ceux qui inventent n'ont jamais vecu"? right at the very end of the album they go into this fast riff (that almost seems tacked on) and play it until it fades out.

if i'm not mistaken it's a direct rip-off (though sped up) of something off of dmsft's "goodbye enemy airship ..." but i keep forgetting to A/B the albums so i can't be sure. if that's the case then it's the most brilliantly tongue-in-cheek piece of quotation/paraphrasing in rock music's recent history.

if i am mistaken, well ... then the end of the fly pan am disc really sounds like a dmsft riff.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Wednesday, 15 January 2003 17:45 (twenty-three years ago)

trumpeter-boy proudly wears [p]leather trousers all the time
That would be Brian, I think he wears his pants so he can channel the force of satan into his other band Gesundheit.
