I have heard the rumour thrice in the last two days and to get it out of idle gossip if they were what would it mean ?

Okay, I PHONED the Artphag Helpdesk instead. Stu said he hadn't heard anything - meaning, 'no they are not'- but says 'Ewww, what a very scary rumour!' Stu is friends with Rufus Wainwright etc. set, housesits for the Taschens, all that, so would know.

Yes, I also heard this one over a decade ago, along with Morrissey + Tracey from the Primitives and Stipe + Natalie Merchant, the last of which I seem to remember being true. I think Billy Bragg appeared somewhere in this as well.

*VERY* old rumor, yes, and they've been friends for years and all. My understanding was this -- past girlfriend of mine knew somebody who worked in REM's fan offices. A Certain English Singer was apparently in the habit around 1992, 93 of constantly sending Michael fresh roses every day. ;-)

Suzy-No, don't know Stuart, but apparently loads of my friends do! I was DJing at Akbar last night and my arty friend Jamey came in so I asked him. It turns out Stuart moved into his apartment after he vacated it a couple of years ago. Huh! Anyway, we've probably been to a lot of the same parties and bars and such, although my links to the LA art scene are pretty tenuous. Don't go to many openings these days--I just know a lot of Cal Arts graduates about my age and a few Art Center graduates 10 years younger.

That sounds about right. When I was researching an article on the LA art scene 'cos there is a giant show here now, *everyone* knew him. It was pretty silly. Nick is in town (hooray!) so on Thursday I am taking him to dinner with Stu, his flatmate (a Wilson sister), my friends Georgina and Paul (also artists), and Stu's friends from Hobbypop. Don't know where we are going but it should be v. cool.
