David Axelrod: RFI

I was mightily intrigued by the Mojo article from a couple months' back, especially w/ DJ Shadow's props. The stuff I've downloaded hasn't impressed me (though, granted, it was a Lou Rawls tune), but then I imagine his recent MoWax release would be interesting, to say the least.

So, what's what? Who's where? And what the hell am I wearing?

David Raposa, Sunday, 25 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

theres some decent stuff from the 'heyday' (i don't know, 68-73ish). i was quite into his stuff about 2 or 3 years ago, but i'm not really that sure now. the best stuff seems to be other peoples stuff, (theres Cannonball Adderley and Electric Prunes things that aren't bad). the mo'wax one is just boring, i wouldn't recommend it at all, its original stuff touched up or something isn't it? well, its just dull really.

oh, and Dave? its a Kangol

gareth, Sunday, 25 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think He's boss. I downloaded many tracks and they were beautifully and carefully orchestrated and arranged. Very cool and funky, and very interesting, almost romantic.

JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 13 January 2005 04:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a few different things but the album I enjoy the most is the Axelrod Chronicles that has a bunch of stuff he produced kind of lumped together.

Mucho Chupar is awesome!

hector (hector), Thursday, 13 January 2005 04:29 (twenty-one years ago)

gareth is sort of right, but sort of not. the track with ras kass, "all the little children" is great in a stand-up riveting sort of way.

also let's not forget that axelrod is hella studly

What's wrong with Lou Rawls?

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 13 January 2005 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't ask me - prior to becoming the free-wheelin' David R., I had super-sized rockist sticks up my butt about many a thing. I'll disown any comments I made on here prior to 2004 (unless you liked them) (for the right reasons).

I was just listening to some DA thing I D/L'd probably around the time I fist started this thread - can't recall which album, but it sounded pretty good! Especially the cover of "You're So Vain"!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 13 January 2005 06:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i remember HATING the You're so Vain cover, but that was many years ago.

my favorite album of his is Earth Rot. i've never gotten into any of the Adderly albums he produced. i really like the s/t current one

JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 13 January 2005 06:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I just listened to a bunch of samples of Earth Rot on-line -- they were short, but it's hard for me to imagine liking those corny vocals if I hear them for longer.

Earl Palmer should be the drummer on every album ever.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 14 January 2005 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Hurting, you know the story, right, that Hal Blaine would ask the producer for a gold record if the thing was a hit, so he's got all these gold records at home, and uh, Earl Palmer doesn't.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 14 January 2005 04:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Nope, didn't know that.

Hurting (Hurting), Friday, 14 January 2005 05:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Just thought I'd tell you.

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 14 January 2005 05:57 (twenty-one years ago)

my mom hates three things:
racists, slinkies, and lou rawls.
oh and me, that's four.

Has anyone heard the new Capitol-era Axelrod anthology on Blue Note? Thoughts?

Telephonething (Telephonething), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

Done.

You need it. Very enjoyable overview of his styles with several different artists and his own solo work. Just oozing with soul, funk, class, nuance and expansive spirituality.
I need to hear that album he did with Letta Mbulu.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Thursday, 15 September 2005 02:59 (twenty years ago)

thanks, hurting. made my evening

Righty-o, that's another on the "must listen soon" list. I did pick up the teaser 12" on iTunes, and there's a really fantastic Axelrod-produced Letta Mbulu track on it (an "alternate mix" of "Pula Yelta" and the instrumental, not sure if they're on the CD as well).

Telephonething (Telephonething), Thursday, 15 September 2005 03:06 (twenty years ago)

I'm envious of you, Jaxon. I so wish I could love, let alone tolerate, the singing on Earth Rot. Until they remove the vocal tracks from it, it's sadly unlistenable for me.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 15 September 2005 06:11 (twenty years ago)

"Pula Yetla" is the Mbulu track on the Axelrod comp, rec. 1967.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Thursday, 15 September 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

$tateside have recently reissued both Axelrod/Mbulu albums on one cd.
no extra tracks, just the straight through albums.

totally mad OTT arrangements.

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 15 September 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

Heard some track from that Edge comp in Amoeba today and my friend and I agreed it sounded like My Bloody Valentine!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 26 September 2005 02:50 (twenty years ago)

I picked up the collection of Axelrod producing for Lou Rawls and it is very, very good.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 26 September 2005 03:11 (twenty years ago)

The lengthy interview in Waxpoetics 14 is refreshing, amazing and hilarious. Looking forward to part two soon, I hope

Jeff LeVine (Jeff LeVine), Monday, 16 January 2006 23:29 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
"House Of Mirrors" from the Edge comp just came up on shuffle and I suddenly realized that it's the basis for DJ Shadow's "Dark Days" soundtrack.

I knew that there was a connection before, but it finally bonked me on the head this time.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 23 February 2007 08:25 (nineteen years ago)

for some reason I find The Sick Rose so evocative of the beauty and creepiness of LA - pure genius
