They were all right but they never really entirely sent me, neither did Lotus Crown, which Jimi Shields started after leaving RS after its first album. Heart in the right place, at least. If I gave them a relisten I might find something new.

Live they impressed me live, unlike the lacklustre album.

possibly the worse Salinger-ref name possible, the draw of Jimi Shields (sibling of Kevin), and they were sandwiched between two of my favorite bands at the time (further and Pavement) in April 1994...

very bad "world-beat" take on british indie rock. i thought of them as a low-low-rent seefeel mixed with really bad keyboard tones (not hip or ironic "bad" just plain cheesy).

their "sound" just lingered around the concert hall, trying desperately to dissipate but the doors were closed so it instead hung stagnantly in the air, eagerly anticipating to be forgotten.

i never thought i'd ever hear of them again. cheers. see ya mate, yeah, see ya mate.

"Speed To My Side" was a good 'un.

I liked them. Lots of layering, but still managed to avoid sounding too chunky or cluttered. They were best when the vocals went a little incoherent and guttural. Once played them on my friend's local radio show. For some reason I was never invited back.

Never managed to hear more than ten seconds of Lotus Crown, but to be honest I never had a good feeling about them.

one year passes...
saw them 4 times live
2 times at maxwells in hoboken
once at cbgb
once on the side stage at lollapalooza
they're the reason i went
i liked early 10 inches and shoulder voices
horsedrawn wishes was kind of a letdown
i nver heard them play any of that album live
the first show at maxwells is in the top ten shows
jimi shields is a cocky ass riding his brothers coattails
the bassist is cool as i hung out w/him 2 days when he stayed w/ a friend
the rest didnt really have too much personality

I thought Rollerskate Skinny was great, and I actually prefer the second record to the first. Somewhat complex without getting too pompous, a bit noisy without losing melodic/rhythmic content, melodic without getting all wimpy - a nice balancing act.

eleven years pass...

So Shoulder Voices got reissued... I had no idea! Was just browsing and there it was. Sounds great!
