Tell me about the Hawkwind, Pink Fairies, Deviants, Motorhead axis because I don't know much.

Mick Farren (ex-Deviants, NME etc) has just published an autobiography, which is a start. Lemmy's is still on the way, though someone from Simon and Schuster told me he'd been signed up four years ago. It should be quite long, as it's not like he's ever slept much.

you _could_ make a more specific request... they're all inter- related to some extent, they all made musica del rock.

Hawkwind - space rock. Kind of '70s version of Acid Mother Temple. The best live band in the world.

Motorhead - metal. very good dirty metal. Nice.

The overlap is Lemmy Motorhead originally played bass in Hawkwind. And indeed wrote 'Motorhead' as a song for them. he was ejected from the Wind because of chemical differences.

The "biker-delic" part ov thee brit '70's underground was great IMO. Hawkwind were this mentalist MONOLITHIC DRONE ROCK group who would hold onto a riff for, like hours. If U like Amon Duul 2's "Yeti", that's a little bit similar. Search: "Space Ritual", "Doremifasolatido", "X In Search of Space", and "Hall of the mountain Grill", which features thee above w/prog mellotrons. be aware the hawkwind have about 10,000 dodgy semi official releases out, 99.9999% ov which are utter rubbish. Pink Fairies were this ultra-scuzzy proto stoner rock group. They were quite indescribable, actually, and I can't think of a single other band who really sound anything like them. Search for "What a Bunch of Sweeties", which contains an AwEsOmE cover ov "Walk Don't Run" and "Live at the Roundhouse".

Motorhead is an interesting band in that many punk bands were influenced by metal, but they were really the first metal band to get into the punk thing. Their early stuff was more barroom rock than metal anyway, especially "On Parole." Their take on "City Kids" is classic, but soon after Lemmy began his 20 year diet of Nazi histories which gives us all the classic war/death related ditties we've come to know and love. And don't forget the Cardiff trio Budgie!
