"Hanson, of 'Mmmbop' fame, has been covering Radiohead’s 'Optimistic' on their latest tour, the Underneath Tour, which started this July 5. The group have opened with 'Optimistic' on both nights at their NYC Irving Plaza shows. "

I have to get an mp3 of this.

vinnie bobereeno (vinnie bobereeno), Saturday, 7 August 2004 08:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, Hanson are still together? Who knew?

Philip Alderman (Phil A), Saturday, 7 August 2004 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

they are preforming a free concert in my area.

how times have changed that they are preforming for free. i love how time changes things.

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Saturday, 7 August 2004 08:55 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, they did one in my area as well.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 7 August 2004 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

They have a song co-written with Matthew Sweet on their newest record as well. They appear to have at least slightly better musical taste than their own music would indicate. Although since "Mmm-bop" is little more than a Jackson 5 pastiche, maybe they've actually shown it all along.

phil d., Saturday, 7 August 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

hey I just saw a free Yeah Yeah Yeahs concert in Philly so let's not pretend doing on means you're desparate.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 7 August 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I just saw a free Yeah Yeah Yeahs concert in Philly so let's not pretend doing on means you're desparate

I can't see the logic of this assertion.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 7 August 2004 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

bah!

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 7 August 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, I bet that Hanson doing "Optimistic" would kinda rule, given that they would probably nail that "oooooooooooh-oooooooooooh-oooooooh" vocal part.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Saturday, 7 August 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Erm, so have Liberty X.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 7 August 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

But the context is so different, William. Hanson's whole aesthetic seems vaguely at odds with Radiohead, so it's more interesting for them to do this.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Saturday, 7 August 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I just found a recording of this online, but the sound is so atrocious that it's really difficult to hear what's going on. It sounds like it was recorded on an answering machine three blocks away from the venue!

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Saturday, 7 August 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I can imagine this. I bet it's good.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Saturday, 7 August 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Yawn. Wake me when they cover Hanoi Rocks.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 7 August 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha very good call

the music mole (colin s barrow), Saturday, 7 August 2004 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, when Radiohead covers Hanoi Rocks?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 8 August 2004 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

They should record a covers album!

I can't imagine any way in which this wouldn't be glorious; after hearing their acoustic version of 'drrrty' I am happy to imagine them singing anything in three-part harmony.

cis (cis), Sunday, 8 August 2004 06:54 (twenty-one years ago)

No discussion of Hanson is complete, IMHO, without quoting *this* in its entirity:

Avery: "Can I hear the story of the one legged soldier? Please?

Jessie: "Yeah, and can I hear the story of the Tin Soldier?
Please? One more time! or I'll knock your nose off!"

Not so long ago in a toy room not so far away,
Lived a boy, who had so many toys
And he didn't know what to do with them all,
With them all, with them all.

Well his favorite of all the toys
Were the Tin Soldiers, the Tin Soldiers,
And the one that he loved the most,
Was the one with the missing leg.

At night the toys would come alive,
That's how the story is told,
There they meet, the soldier with the missing leg,
And the Ballerina with the heart of gold,
At night they would share each others dreams,
Under the stars shining bright,
But they were to shy to speak of love,
To speak of love

One day, the boy sat him on the window sill,
To watch for the enemy coming over the hill,
Ooh, but when the wind blew, and knocked him into the street,
The boys from the town they said,
"Won't you look at the one legged soldier!"
"Lets take him in our boat and send him far away,
'Cause you can't find a use for a soldier, with a missing leg!"
And he was, lonely, so lonely, for a friend,
And he was lonely, so lonely, for a friend,
He was so lonely yeah,
As he floated past the river raft,
On his homemade boat

Well the boat began to sink,
And it sank to the bottom of the river,
It got swallowed by a fish, caught by a fisherman,
Sold to the filly and the boy who had the toys,
And the cook said, "Look at the one legged soldier,
It looks just like the one, we lost the other day!
Could this be the boy's tin soldier,
With the missing leg?"

But he was...lonely, so lonely, for a friend,
And he was lonely, so lonely, for a friend,
He was so lonely, yeah, oh yeah...
so lonely, oh yeah

Avery: "What about the ballerina?"

As he sat on the mantel place to dry from the river,
The ballerina who held his heart sat at his side
And when they got up...to dance with each other,
She fell by the fire, blazing bright!
When he jumped to save her, from the flames,
The bases began to melt into one and the same,
Now they share each others destiny,
Together forever, they will be!
And they are no longer lonely, for a friend,
And they are no longer lonely for a friend,
No longer lonely, yeah, no longer lonely,
Ooh yeah, oooohh, no longer lonely, yeah

Well, not so long ago, in a toy room not so far away,
Lived a boy who had so many toys,
And he played with them all,
With them all, with them all,
Well he had a ballerina, and one legged soldier,
Stuck together at the base,
And they share each others destiny,
As they sit on top of the mantel place,
It's the story of the one legged soldier
The story of the one legged soldier
The story of the tin soldier with the missing leg!

MarkH (MarkH), Sunday, 8 August 2004 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

My sister's obsession with Zac Hanson msny years ago got her into drumming and percussion.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 8 August 2004 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

this is somewhat sad, as "Mmm-bop" is easily superior to about 75% of radiohead's recorded material. i wish they would cover something like INXS to go along with the current teenpop-covering-80s theme, even though they are neither teens nor desirous of being "pop" since they've woefully learned that it's a Bad Thing To Be

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 8 August 2004 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

is taylor still incredibly fuckable or has he to wallowed in the widening fat lines of the other two/radiohead

queen gimme gimme and the hanson ass, Sunday, 8 August 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The story of the tin soldier with the missing leg!

Oh for CUTE. They really should sing that for the troops in Iraq.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 8 August 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't they have a song about crying that their friend's photo wasn't in the yearbook?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 8 August 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

(I'm not sure whether I'm talking about Hanson or Radiohead)

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 8 August 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

this is somewhat sad, as "Mmm-bop" is easily superior to about 75% of radiohead's recorded material.

Oh, the horrors of being tonedeaf.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Sunday, 8 August 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

man, I need to get me some Hanson records!

and yeah Salvador otm "MMbop" is actually better than 95% of radiohead's recorded material.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 8 August 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice to know your personal opinion.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Sunday, 8 August 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 8 August 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

alcazarized!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 8 August 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

None less than Tico Tico himself, though no R-head fan, dismissed "Mmmbop" as a rockist's lame dream at pop, and I have no reason to disagree with him still.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 8 August 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

that's coz Tico Tico is a Power Pop hata, and when he finally found one group in that genre that he *did* like it was Busted, so clearly he is NOT TO BE TRUSTED on that front.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 8 August 2004 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Using Alcazarized instead of Owned = MOST GENIUS THING EVER.

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 8 August 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

this sounds great. Mark my words...On this day I predict that you will all own a Hanson cd before you die.
