Love dese guys. I was going to post a song of theirs for the first Listening Chamber, actually. This album was one of my 'holy grail' records for quite a while, eventually unearthing it 2nd hand in Australia(!). So, uhm, I like it and it's hopeless for me to try and judge it without bias.

Don't know who this is but I like it. Sounds very indierockish. At the end it gets a little stupid and goes nowhere really but still [this is good]. Very good intro: Nice drumming and bass playing in the foreground. The voice is a little thin but not unpleasant.

Finally, one I know. I like it a lot, and this album is easy to find in used record bins.

yeah, very indierock with traces of Gang of Four and a nice hook at the end. I can see myself getting tired of it reasonably quickly, though.

This sounds like it would be fantastic live.

I liked this so much when I downloaded it last night that I guessed at the song title, searched amg for the band and trawled all the record shops in town for the album this afternoon. Only found it at full price in Virgin, but what the hell, I couldn't wait. As a Dismemberment Plan/Burning Airlines/Bluetip/Les Savy Fav fan it's what I hope for from every post-whatever band that's hyped up in NME, but rarely get.

Tracer, you are quite right about that - this band is superb live.

David Raposa, Wednesday, 28 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've listened to another song by this band which is sustantially less interesting than the chamber song - it had a more typical grunge tune and arrangement. I'd imagine they'd more often be like this...so ho hum.

I like the spiky, stabbing guitar and keyboards at the start, but apart from that it's just okay - typical 1990s 'Festive 50' material. The singer reminded me of Malcolm Owen of The Ruts, actually.

(BTW I cheated too and googled the title. I hate feeling left out.)

Great band... I thought their most recent album was a minor letdown, after their great 2nd album (that got them dropped)

Well worth checking out.

two weeks pass...
i have no idea who this, but i'm quite surprised by the positive comments above, this sounds like drab US indie rock. this is what i always fear things like Modest Mouse and Dismemberment Plan would sound like (which prevents me buying their stuff to find out!)

sounded quite busy, but this is not something i would want to buy

Uh, sorry to steal Dave's thunder, but it's been just about a month now, so the answer may as well be revealed: The band is Spoon and the track is "30 Gallon Tank". Incidentally, Dave's got some thoughts on them (and possible parallels to That Band With The Singer with the Cool Name) at his co-blog "Let's Build A Car" (sorry, I'm to lazy to link.) As stated above, I like this (at least, I think I still do, I haven't listened in a while) for the same reasons that Dave does (he sez: "It’s music that’s raw & kinetic while also possessing a sense of austere decoration"), but I could understand how it comes off as 'blah' indie rock. If I'd heard this now for the first time, I fear I my reaction would be the same. The D-Plan don't, though. Ignore them no longer, Gareth (but for my money you'd best leave Modest Mouse well alone). Also, if this mildy interests you, try hear the rest of the "Series of Sneaks" disc, specifically "Metal Detektor" (sic).

Mitch, you can steal my thunder any day, hmmdoggy.

By the way, if you're looking for a pertinent reason as to why I posted this track (besides my love of it), feel free to skate on over to THEE BLOG Mitch mentioned earlier.
