Decemberists sounding like Neutral Milk Hotel/Jeff Mangum. When I first heard them I thought "Robyn Hitchcock" all the way for the vocals.
I hadn't heard a ton of NMH so I went back and listened and I couldn't hear it.
While they may sound a bit alike, I don't think it warranted all the "sounds like NMH" tags they got in so many music reviews. It was like a Republican smear campaign taking off in the media; all the reviewers were just lazy and passed it on...I think.

With the exception of a few moments on S/E, Pavement never really sounded that much like the Fall, with particular emphasis on everything from Crooked Rain on.

i always thought the born against/refused thing was overstated. it's not without some truth, but it's just been run into the ground because of the backlash against all the crappy wannabe hardcore bands being influenced by the 'shape of punk to come'.

I won't pretend The High Llamas' stuff isn't (intermittently) evocative of Brian Wilson, I just think the quality of their(O'Hagen's) material makes the constant comparisons irrelevant, to say nothing of lazy and tiresome.

When people say that Nirvana sounded like the Pixies, what they REALLY mean is "Nirvana's best-known song ['Teen Spirit'] sounds kinda like the Pixies' best song ['Gigantic']." Same straightforward 4/4 plod, extremely quiet verse/extremely loud refrain seesawing structure. And that's about it, far as I can tell.
Same thing happened to Queensryche a dozen-or-so years ago - they had that one hit song that sorta sounded like something off The Wall (its arpeggiated guitar part did, anyhow), which led to many Pink Floyd comparisons.

Radiohead sounds like NOTHING on the actual NOTHING catalogue, in every case they've been described as sounding as such (Kid A, Amnesiac 'critiques'). More LIKE early electroacoustic composers--- e.g., Xenakis, Parmegiani, Luc Ferrari, etc. --- on the electronic side of things. And more like modern classical composers on the skull off their songwriting.
