there hasn't been a thread on kcs & i think they totally deserve one. nor have they been mentioned much on ilm by anyone but myself or my fellow canuks.

i've always liked these guys a lot. i picked up the new album, destroy all codes, last week and it's a total classic.
this was followed by seeing them live friday - which was also brilliant.
this new album tho is quite fantastic - only one track has vocals - some of the tracks kind of have a medeski martin & wood feel to them and there's a great dub track at the and.

i've always like these guys & it's nice to see them continue to evolve their sound.

I've never heard them, but always meant to.

well you fucking should¡

i'm interested to know if anyone outside of canada has even heard of these guys before.

i heard the first album. didn't guy fixen work on this? I remember being really disappointed.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah. I suck.

I liked Mayday and Junior Relaxer, and what I've read about the new album sounds very intriguing.
Anyone heard the remixes from (I think) Junior Relaxer? Who does the remixing?

I like the two KCS records I have. Very much like Laika, perhaps for obvious reasons.

If I remember right, Steve Albini did the first one, Bill Laswell the second, Guy Fixsen the next two.

From what I've heard of the new album, it's really not very good. But I saw them live once, and they put on a good show, and the label they had when they were on EMI Canada, Lunamoth, put out some alright stuff (first albums by the Wooden Stars and Snailhouse, and that UI remix CD).

anthony - their 1st album never impressed me very much either. their work after that sounds very little like it (waaaaaay better). i think they stopped trying to be can-rock after that.

I've spoken to Sean about these guys quite a few times, and I may one of the only non-Canadians around these parts who really likes them. (I first heard them in 1993 on a comp cassette someone handed me at CMJ that year. It was a comp of Canadian bands, and "Duotang" off the first record was on it. Same comp where I discovered the Inbreds.)

I haven't heard the new one, though I am a big fan of Junior Relaxer and Project Twinkle. I am still hunting down the first record, cause I think it's still my favorite even though I haven't heard it since the tape copy I made of the CD at my college radio station got left in my car and died from heat exhaustion. Mayday is a good listen, but I can't get into it as much as the others for some reason.

Speaking of bands more people outside of Canada should know about, is there a thread on the Rheostatics yet?

i don't think they ever crossed over to the US. they are real nice people, though.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Who? The Rheos? I got that impression, yes.

I think there should be more of them in the US. Dammit.

never twigged to them, despite having the last two albums recommended to me time and time again. I don't know what it is, but they never worked for me.

i have Junior Relaxer and it didn't stick after a couple spins. Listened to it recently and it was more engaging than I remember, but I still haven't pulled it back out again.

three years pass...

YES! and I started it, so that Sean could tell me more about them.

But back to my orginal reason for visiting ILM:
I have just been reminded of how good King Cobb Steelie are.
That is all.
