the mind boggles

tylero (tylero), Thursday, 12 August 2004 03:53 (twenty-one years ago)

that is truly stunning.

spoony G, Thursday, 12 August 2004 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)

holy fuck what is this im watching it now

astroblaster (astroblaster), Thursday, 12 August 2004 04:59 (twenty-one years ago)

that was delightful

astroblaster (astroblaster), Thursday, 12 August 2004 05:05 (twenty-one years ago)

apparently, breakdancing is a new addition to 12-step heroin detox programs ...

spoony G, Thursday, 12 August 2004 05:08 (twenty-one years ago)

dude, what's next? mtv/sprite endorsement? that so shatters my teenage skinny puppy mythology.
m.

msp, Thursday, 12 August 2004 05:13 (twenty-one years ago)

skinny puppy still exist? WTF?

|a|m|t|r|s|t| (amateurist), Thursday, 12 August 2004 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah. the new album's not half bad, either.

spoony G, Thursday, 12 August 2004 05:23 (twenty-one years ago)

did they actually find goth people who could break or did they dress up some b-boys?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 12 August 2004 05:25 (twenty-one years ago)

hehehehehehehe.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Thursday, 12 August 2004 07:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I got an email from Kali about this morning. I will refer her to this thread to talk about it...

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Thursday, 12 August 2004 07:53 (twenty-one years ago)

the new album is 100% bad actually.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 12 August 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

what happens near the end with the dude taking his shirt off?!?!?

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Thursday, 12 August 2004 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"did they actually find goth people who could break or did they dress up some b-boys?"

I find it difficult to believe even the grooviest, least serious group of goths in the world could get that good, so I'd lean towards the latter.

Sansai, Thursday, 12 August 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Wha? It's not like I filmed the thing! Why do you encourage me, Kate? ;-)

That link will go down this Friday, BTW. Just so you folks know.

Yes, Skinny Puppy are back. They have a new album (The Greater Wrong of the Right) and they just finished up the first leg of a tour last month. The next leg starts in October where they will cover more cities. The Kevins are off hard drugs, getting along, and are more concerned and excited about being able to work together again than trying to fit into any particular genre or preconceived idea of what Skinny Puppy is or was. People expecting to hear (and apparently also see) a rehash of what went before could be very disappointed. Several, however, have learned to expect the unexpected from the boys and appreciate that they've always done what they've wanted to even when the output was not to their taste. It would also appear that the band's sense of humor has been lost on many and I'm stunned because that's one of the things I've always loved most about them.

So, where to start on the video?

Given the song choice, almost everyone was expecting... a protest? People getting beaten? Ogre getting beaten or tortured like he has in so many Puppy videos? Blood? Gore?A political message of some sort? Something at least remotely disturbing? I know I was!

So, I was in for quite the shock when I saw it yesterday for the first time. My first thought was "WTF? It's sunny, it's bright, there are breakdancing goths... it's a dance-off for fuck's sake! Pretty damn impressive dancers though." But then there's that little nudge at the end with the glowing red eyes and the "word" that just put it all into place for me and I laughed my ass off. It was as if to say, "I bet you weren't expecting this! Ha!" The more I watch it, the better it gets. I love that they did this rather than what everyone was expecting. With all the imitators over the years, one could expect them to try to go further with all the horror schlock than they have before in order to outdo them. But no, they have nothing to prove nor do they care. Skinny Puppy didn't get served. The people who were expecting something specific based on whatever ideas they had about the band did. And that's what I find to be the funniest thing about this video. Plus, if you look hard enough, there's still a message there.

See what happens when you encourage me, Kate? See?

kaliflwr (kaliflwr), Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

so are they doing another north american tour this year, soon?

kephm, Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Mr. Perry, where are you? This is YOUR video!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, the next part of the tour starts in October. No dates are available yet, but they will be hitting more cities than before.

kaliflwr (kaliflwr), Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

the new album is 100% bad actually.

the above statement is 100% false.

tricky disco, Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Not ONLY is this my video, it's a video I've wanted to make since 1990! (My version was a video for "The Days Of Swine And Roses" that exactly followed Hammer's "U Can't Touch This" video, complete with gothy dancers etc.)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Wooohooo more DWrules refugees.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

(It's not that Kali, Noodles, sorry.)

Thanks for stepping in, Kaliflwr. I knew that you could put that more eloquently than I could...

(And no, sorry, I've not been able to download the video that you sent me. You know my work connection, etc. etc. Though I think my colleagues would actually be amused by breakdancing goffs.)

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Kaliflwr was there too as well right or is that BJMasscara?
I can't download this at work. The fates are mocking me.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Kate, stop encouraging me or I'll send you the full version of that essay posted above before I edited it for length and far too much rambling. ;-)

kaliflwr (kaliflwr), Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

(I am about halfway through downloading as we speak, even though the boss just came back in.)

Come ON, Kali - take a look around you! See where you are! Long, semi-coherent rants about music that you love is why this place exists! Post it here!

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

regardless of intentions that is baws. doing things because they're not what people expect is never an excuse for doing something bad.

simon 803 (simon 803), Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, what was is a long, rambling post that went into live performances, expectations, examples of cheesiness in other videos, and how they always had a sense of humor even when dealing with the most brutal of subject matters, etc. Nah, I'll spare the folks here.

They didn't intentionally do something that people wouldn't expect so much as do something they wanted to knowing full well that people weren't going to expect it. They knew people wouldn't like the new album either. They're used to it by now. This isn't anything new.

kaliflwr (kaliflwr), Thursday, 12 August 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

(OK, the only question I have is, where did the two big black guys come from? They weren't with the Goffs at the beginning of the video. What was that about? Where did they come from?)

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Thursday, 12 August 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still trying to figure out if that's a continuity error (there are several) and if it was intentional or not. Maybe it's symbolic. Hey, it's only been out a day, that's not nearly enough time to formulate pseudo-philosophical theories about video content. ;-)

kaliflwr (kaliflwr), Thursday, 12 August 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's beautiful. Especially that last shot. "word". hahahaha!

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 12 August 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

No, whatever it was, it seemed quite deliberate. I mean, obviously the Goffs knew them from the way they helped tear off their fishnet vests and all.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Thursday, 12 August 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I was kinda underwhelmed by the SP show I saw in SF in July, but that video is 100% entertaining.

Avi (Avi), Thursday, 12 August 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, right, well, there you go then! Risking a theory here... preconceived notions about what the black-clad and pale were about being smashed. It keeps happening in that vid, right up to the end.

Now I'll go hit myself with something.

kaliflwr (kaliflwr), Thursday, 12 August 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

The black guys are there from the beginning, in the back.
(x-post)

Seb (Seb), Thursday, 12 August 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Remember the Sisters of Mercy/Public Enemy double bill? (were you at that gig? I can't remember!) Maybe that was what it was about. The blackest bands got to stick together. ;-)

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Thursday, 12 August 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, the black guys were there in the beginning according to someone who just pointed that out. So, um, scratch that part of the theory if not the whole theory.

kaliflwr (kaliflwr), Thursday, 12 August 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think that they were. I did not see them. In fact, I scrolled back through the video to see where they showed up. I'm not downloading that mega-file again, but...

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Thursday, 12 August 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

No, no, I missed the PE/SOM show. I think it had to do with Vision Thing being the SOM album at that moment. I was a bigger PE fan by that time.

kaliflwr (kaliflwr), Thursday, 12 August 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, you're right, they are there when they're marching up. I wonder why they weren't in the shot right before where they burst in and start dancing. Probably to build up tension and silly preconceptions like mine.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Thursday, 12 August 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

The 2 black guys in combat pants' act is the best bit! (apart from the bit where the b-boys are mocing the goths near the beginning)(plus I watched it again, and they are there at the beginning!) This is excellent, anyway! Thanx for the link! (argh x-post)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 12 August 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

why'd they beat up the asian dude?

Richard K (Richard K), Thursday, 12 August 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

The Krumping (or whatever it's called now) is the best bit for me.. not sure about the lachapelle feature, the documentary was enough

That was awesome!

hector (hector), Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

The new album is 200% awful ... don't any of you have even the slightest taste filters?

Dare, Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

the above statment is 200% false. jon, is that your first pitchfork review?

tricky disco, Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

there's another sp thread where the new album was discussed (& bashed by me) so i'm not going to go into that here. but the video was something that i thought of in high school. seriously. the high-school-angsty-goth-dyson would've loved it 10 years ago. but today it's obvious to regualer-guy-angsty-dyson that this video is simply an attempt to "cool up" skinny puppies image. i don't feel this video was as much about doing the unexpected as it was about pandering to a younger target audience.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you need to go back and reacquaint yourself with the high-school-angsty-goth-dyson.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe i could dye my hair black again.
but not if it means wearing eyeshadow.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

(The thought that obliquely led to my previous post was "WHO CARES whether the goal of this video was to pander to a younger audience or to confound the expectations of their fanbase or whatever? It's still great!")

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

great in the cheesy sense perhaps. the glowing "thriller" eyes at the end was a little much.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, SP has never ever done anything even remotely intentionally cheesy before. Nothing at all. Nope! I'm going to go watch cEvin dressed up as a deranged postman in Spasmolytic now so I can feel his angst more fully and learn to hate this new video. ;-)

kaliflwr (kaliflwr), Thursday, 12 August 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

you just can't appreciate great comedy, can you?

sp are/were great but they were already a borderline comedy act.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 12 August 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

ahhh true. maybe i just took them too seriously back when i was really into them.

i'm going to go to their next live show and laugh my ass off now.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 12 August 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't worry, this Goths trump B Boys vid isn't racist. See? We made the token blacks beat up the asian kid.

you sure said it.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 12 August 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Damien Echols is totally guilty.

Damien Echols is totally guilty.

Oh no he's not.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 12 August 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Due to the site being hit a bit too often and MTVU agreeing to put it into rotation, they've taken it down a day early. That's what SPV's saying anyway.

Now, who actually gets MTVU, because I sure as hell don't.

kaliflwr (kaliflwr), Thursday, 12 August 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

tricky disco, Thursday, 12 August 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

why do you think the new SP is 200% bad? there's some good songs on it. or are you just trying to be purist cool?

Hopefully not what you have (ie, a gigantic projection complex where anything that involves minorities that wanders outside of their imagined cultural box MUST be racist, exposing some nasty sublimated racist assumptions).

(xpost: If I'd heard anything Quake-related as great as the current Skinny Puppy single, I would play more Quake.)

kaliflwr (kaliflwr), Friday, 20 August 2004 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
repost from myspace:

Subject: As if Skinny Puppy gets any airplay anyway.....
Body: Here goes yet ANOTHER lame boycott. Seriously, why do these people even care that a Canadian Industrial band has a negative opinion about Bush?

"In the past few months a band by the name of Skinny
Puppy has slandered Bush. At several of their
concerts over the Summer they have simulated an
assassination of the president. On their current Fall
tour they simulated a beheading similar to the ones
happening in Iraq. When the vocalist pulls off their
hoods he reveals the terrorists to be Bush and Cheney.
This is unacceptable and I encourage you not to play
their latest record, The Greater Wrong of the Right,
that has been indicated by their record label as being
played on your station. Conservatives are currently a
majority of the populace now and we have voted into
power a majority in every level of government. The
people of this country have the power as evident by
our boycott of the Reagan miniseries, the Superbowl,
and the Dixie Chicks. If you still choose to play
their music we have the ability to put financial
pressure on your station through boycotts. Please
remove Skinny Puppy from rotation or we will have no
choice but to boycott your station."

Dubya In 2008--Repeal The 22nd Amendment Campaign by PABAAH

Johnno, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 09:28 (twenty-one years ago)

American Patriot (aka Daryl Mason) has had it out for SP for some time now. His Puppy-hate seems to have started with the ohGr Majik video in fact, in which he called for the video to be pulled from rotation. Now, one might ask, "what rotation?" since I think it was only shown once on MTV2 at 3AM, but that's besides the point. Threatening to boycott radio stations that play Skinny Puppy is just too funny for words as their popularity hardly compares to that of a Reagan miniseries, the Superbowl or the Dixie Chicks. He seems particularly passionate about this Puppy situation which might have something to do with a group of fans going onto his message boards and tormenting him for fun.

I just saw them last weekend again (NYC and Sayreville shows) and had a fantastic time. I can easily say the Sayreville show was the best one I've seen on this tour. I believe the Montreal show is tonight, which will be filmed for a DVD along with the Toronto show a couple of days from now.
