Replacement Canon Entries

It's a sad fact of life that we can generally all think of albums that should be highly critically regarded the world over, and yet are strangely critically ignored, while some rather mediocre releases are praised to the skies. But what about when you know of a relatively underappreciated album that does the exact same thing as a "masterpiece", but better? Here's your chance to topple that ogre from its throne and nominate a fresh new contender to replace it. (note: this doesn't only apply to the "masterpieces", but any album that's widely considered to be the best at whatever it does).

For example: why would you ever bother with Photek's (admittedly quite enjoyable) Modus Operandi when you could just listen to Source Direct's infinitely superior Controlled Developments, which offers up the same sort of dark, edgy, cinematic and fractured drum & bass, but manages to actually be exciting at the same time.

Why Listen to Highway 61 or Man in Black when one can listen to Nashville Skyline

Teenage Fanclub's "Bandwagonesque" instead of the first Big Star album.

Because the first Big Star album is amazingly good and Bandwagonesque is amazingly not good.

Hmph, Tim, as I recall I bothered with it because you or Dan or someone told me it was what to get. ;)

Why listen to music when you can have sex? Oh wait, I'm single. When you can eat some good food?

I never said such a thing. Modus Operandi is good, but I have recommended Source Direct to you any number of times, so I feel no stain of sin upon my soul.

Hmph, I wish I had saved that email.

EVOL (excepting that awful awful bonus track "Bubblegum") is to me immensely better than Daydream Nation. Lessee, I listen to Solid Gold a little more than I listen to Entertainment, but I'm not really sure it's better. I like Dub Housing just as much if not better than The Modern Dance. For the record, that Photek record sucks (way too long and same-y sounding) and that Source Direct record is great (six tracks--just right) and virtually everyone I know agrees on this (even if though generally everyone I know likes Photek a little better than Source Direct). Big Star are real good (although the Flaming Groovies might be better) and the Teenage Fanclub are boring and derivative (but are the Posies more boring and more derivative). You make the call.

'Highway to Hell' over 'Back in Black' and 'Powerage' over both. 'Women & Children First' over 'Van Halen', because there's no filler pop ballads ("Little Dreamer", what a waste of space). 'Black and Blue' over 'Exile', and 'Exit the Dragon' over both.'Superunknown' is better than 'Physical Graffiti' as well.
