...and somehow includes steve marriott and john lennon.

in the intro he says 'i could pick at least 40, but when i was asked to make this list, i wasnt just thinking in terms of black american r&b artists. these are 10 singers who immediately spring to my miind as having a raw, soulful quality to their voice. great singers, with soul."

1 marvin gaye
2 aretha franklin
3 steve marriott of the small faces
4 john lennon of the beatles
5 stevie wonder
6 carleen anderson

8 gladys knight
9 mavis staples
10 donny hathaway

No Otis? No Al?

Weller's a jerk anyway, who cares what he thinks?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Is he still claiming he's down with what American kids listen to?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

it's interesting, though. all the mod guys i ever knew wouldn't be seen dead with a list like that. it'd all be 'oh dobie grey, out on the floor, darrell banks, open the door to your heart.' weller just doesn't seem to have that characteristic mod drive for obscurity - he wrote those amusing liner notes to the action's Lp when it came out in 1980, but he's spent the rest of his career talking about stevie marriot.

so, er can't remember what my point was but fuck paul weller, his boring list and his never changing moods.

dave amos, Friday, 13 August 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

no fuck magazines that think this is a good idea for a story

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Shouldn't we fuck the idiots who keep buying his fucking dreary records which is what makes the magazines that think this is a good idea for a story?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Weller is a gigantic crashing fucking bore, and list articles in magazines totally fucking blow.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

jesus let's fuck somebody anyway

m4tt c1bu14 lists his top ten soul singers on ILX:

1. not paul weller
2. not steve marriott
3. not john lennon, either of the beatles or any others apparently
4. everyone else

fifteen yards, piling on, it'll be first down from the 35 yard line

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

just wait til you hear wellers new covers album.

splooge (thesplooge), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, next issue has my article "twelve progressive rock albums you need to pwn", so look out for that!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

own or pawn?

splooge (thesplooge), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"jesus let's fuck somebody anyway"

Well, OK, since as I've already managed to fulfil my original objective of finding an excuse to use the expresion "neo codgerite" before the end of this weekend, maybe I'm on a roll...

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm shocked that paul weller of all people wouldn't list curtis mayfield in his top 10.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

This is kind of off-topic, but from over here it seems like you English people sure used to love you some Paul Weller and you sure seem to hate him now. I never understood the Jam-love to begin with, but what happened?

briania (briania), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

It's what happens with the charm of somebody just young, energetic and talented enough can connect the dots to create something that works -- and then spends the rest of his life reconnecting those dots.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 August 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

It's also hatred of the thing called "Dad rock" innit? (asks the American who also notices that British people LOVE to hate what they used to love) (just like everyone else)

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 August 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

It's perplexing to me that hardly any name around here brings forth as much foam-flecked vitriol as that of P**l W****r. It's that cocky OTHER bastard from Style Council that pisses ME off!

briania (briania), Friday, 13 August 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm not british so i'm not exactly qualified to answer briania's question, but i liked me some paul weller when he was making good records (the first five jam albums, but not the sixth, and the first style council album), and i started not liking me paul weller so much when he ran out of steam and started making not-very-good albums.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 13 August 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

But do you HATE him now, like with the white-hot hatred reserved for somebody who betrayed a once-enormous talent? 'Cause to me the P**l W****r career arc is more like: okay ... pretty-good ... okay ... not-so-good.

briania (briania), Friday, 13 August 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't even think about him now, so, no, i'm more in line with you. but i imagine if i were british, it might be harder not to think about him.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Friday, 13 August 2004 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

It's Dad-rock hatred, for sure. That's a conservative (read: boring) list, but too innocuous to raise much ire, otherwise. I was never a huge Jam or Style Council fan, but I reckon "Wild Wood" is a good record.

Wellington B, Friday, 13 August 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm English, but I'm completely indifferent ot Weller now. OK, I'm not in the UK anymore, but even when I lived there, Weller and the Jam (or Style Council) were never big on my radar. They were alright, though. And anyway, where's Elvis Costello on Paul's list? ;)

David A. (Davant), Friday, 13 August 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I only liked the Jam in their "Town Called Malice" phase...always seemed overrated to me.

That's about the lamest soul-singer list ever. No Howard Tate, Joe Tex, Solomon Burke...Lee Dorsey...I don't get it at all. English people are weird!

eddie hurt (ddduncan), Saturday, 14 August 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Weller is a total cock. His fans are total cocks.

I like the Style Council, tho.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 14 August 2004 09:28 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck all paper and online magazines that persist in using fucking lists to fill fucking space.

get some fucker to write something instead!!

word, Saturday, 14 August 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...

Your all wrong. Weller is a genius. what kind of boring music r u into the??

Eddie, Saturday, 23 October 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Brazilian tech-step and ragtime.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 23 October 2004 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

the media-function of the word "soul" is to generate uninteresting lists

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 23 October 2004 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

This is why All Soul's Day never caught on like Halloween did, despite Nick Hornby's efforts.
