Help! Live Music graphic idea needed, defeat to rockist hegemony!

OK, so I'm involved in the design of a freshers guide to Brighton and for every section I'm making outline drawings to represent the section, e.g. someones dancing for clubbing, a bag for shopping, an aeroplane for travel etc.

However, I've got to the 'live music' section and it would be very easy to stick in a guitar, but this seems to obvious and, dare I say it, rockist.

Does anyone have any ideas what I could use instead? Bear in mind that it has to still be recognisable as a single colour pixelated (120 pixels high or wide) outline.

I fear I'm going to have to stick in a guitar...

I think maybe a microphone would be appropriate. Unless that screams "stand up comedy" instead of singing?

How about an amp?

Or a hand doing the satan sign? It would be rockist, but it would be cool.

You could be classicalist and have a violin.

Or jazzist, and have a saxamophone.

or you could have a shot of a stylus on a turntable!

Use an oud instead of a guitar.

if you have the space how about the outlined silhouette of a crowd¿

dyson (dyson), Monday, 16 August 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Sax-a-mo-phone, sax-a-mo-phone.

Satan sign: Like it! The editor might not go for it, but it's worth a shot!

Crowd, also good - but might lack detail.

How about a keyboard, since it's less genre-specific?

Oooh, Stewart - good call! a little too clip-art for the brief I was given, which was "make it funky" (second only to "jazz it up a bit" in design brief cliché)

(x-post just seen your trumpet - I like that idea best of all)

The problem with a keyboard, fitting the style I'm going for, is all you will see is a pixelated rectangle!

All good ideas though, thanks everyone.

I actually like the audience idea best, but the problem would be seeing if it can be simplified enough.

Um, wouldn't a speaker stack suit all purposes?

double-grr.

----------

the audience idea is nice, but I'm not sure it will work with the coarse pixellated look I'm going for.

I've used a headphone silhouette before. Gets the message across I think.

Cheers Stewart, I can't keep up with the constantly changing methods of posting images on ilx.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 07:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, in the end I went with Stewart's trumpet theme, but using a Miles Davis style full body profile outline. So, thanks fella!

Thanks for everyones's help.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 07:15 (twenty-one years ago)

You don't need to thank me.

A cheque by return is all the thanks I need.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 07:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Will a graphic depiction of a cheque do? It's all I can afford.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

As long as it's not a graphic depiction of a bouncing one.
