(I think "Pale Blue Eyes" is the with my favorite brief guitar solo on the album.)

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

2. Candy Says
3. Pale Blue Eyes
4. Beginning to See the Light
5. Murder Mystery
6. Jesus
7. I'm Set Free
8. Some Kinda Love
9. That's the Story of My Life
10. After Hours

I've always been a fan of Murder Mystery...I got this record first of all VU records, while at summer camp when I was 14 or 15. I remember listening to it thinking, "this isn't so weird, what's the big deal?" then getting to Murder Mystery and having my mind blown. Even today I feel stronger about it then most people, who tend to think of it being something they shoulda attempted while Cale was still in the band, or not at all. But i LOVE it!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

When I was 15, my best friend (who was 16) and I used to play Murder Mystery all the time in his mom's Buick Century, and be all like "I bet this is what it's like to be on drugs! Hee hee hee!"

Huck, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Lou was on papaya juice and wheat husks when he wrote it

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

What Goes On is the best song on the album, and maybe be the best VU song as well.

Jonathan Z. (Joanthan Z.), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

help me, VU-scholars: what other songs besides "some kinda love" varied dramatically from the closet mix? i feel like my cult-rock-canon jr. varsity credentials should be revoked due to my memory lapse on this one.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I always thought the closet mix thing was a lot of baloney. Surely the "closet mix" of "Some Kinda Love" isn't a different mix but a entirely different take?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

exactly! are there any other dramatically varied versions due to this "mix"?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

1. What Goes On
2. After Hours
3. Jesus
4. Some Kind of Love
5. Beginning to See the Light
6. I'm Set Free

10. The Murder Mystery

frankE (frankE), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Apart from "Some Kinda Love", I've never really been able to tell the difference - "What Goes On" might be slightly different

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

now that you mention that, i believe there is a longer fade out on a few tracks (incl. "what goes on").

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic-What Goes On by the Feelies.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Favourite to least favourite:
1.What Goes On
2.Candy Says
3.Beginning To See The Light
4.The Murder Mystery
5.Some Kinda Love
6.Afterhours
7.Pale Blue Eyes
8.Jesus
9.That's The Story Of My Life
10.I'm Set Free

I always preferred the VU's experimental/rocking side over the quiet/lyrical side (and never saw what was so fantastic about "Pale Blue Eyes"), but "Candy Says" is too pretty for words, Doug Yule's finest moment, and would make #1 on this list most days (just not today).

I know that one mix of "Jesus" has a louder, more reverbed ending. That's the only difference I can recall - I haven't heard the alternate mix in a dozen years.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

The keyboards are also considerably louder in "What Goes On", especially during the fade-out.

jon boucher, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

1 jesus
2 i'm set free
3 candy says

1. Some Kinda Love
2. Beginning To See The Light
3. That's the Story of My Life
4. What Goes On
5. Pale Blue Eyes
6. After Hours
7. I'm Set Free
8. Candy Says
9. (tie) The Murder Mystery / Jesus

I'm the only one here who loves "Story of My Life"? I was just having a discussion with a friend about whose "Story of My Life" is the better song, the Velvets' or Marty Robbins'. It's close but I vote Velvets.

Burr (Burr), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

1. i'm set free
2. beginning to see the light
3. pale blue eyes
4. after hours
5. candy says
6. the murder mystery
7. what goes on
8. jesus
9. some kinda love
10. that's the story of my life

Some of these songs were ranked lower (especially WGO) because the live versions are so much better and make the album sound weak in comparison.
"The Murder Mystery" is a great song that would likely rank higher if it didn't sound so much like the Doors.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 06:52 (twenty-one years ago)

"What Goes On" is the best song in the *world*, ever.

The way that the organ just kind of... *hangs* there...

Followed by After Hours.

Then Pale Blue Eyes, Jesus and Some Kinda Love in a bunch.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 08:10 (twenty-one years ago)

this's such the hard topic----

1-sister ray- the ultimate noise freak out/monster jam, live versions of this song kill, too! but it's tied with----

1a- what goes on- live(1969)- another monster jam on par with Sister Ray, but, like was said, the thing that makes this is that organ! it's like riding a circus ride with a band, IN A CHURCH!!!!

2-sunday morning- the 'come down' song, so light and airy, so fresh and sleepy, too. like wakeing up to a plate of yr favorite food, but it tastes off because of what you were doing last night, good but still slightly off...

3-sweet jane- album and live versions- can there be any other version that tugs at the heart? the cowboy junkies had a good stab, but, miss the tenderness mixed with hope that the album has, or the uber-intimatacy of the 1969 live version...

4- heard her call my name- damn! it hurts!! but it's just that kinda love.

5- lisa says- live (1969)- another to chalk up to the tender side of VU that works so well, because it's understated.

6- venus in furs- probably THE defining song of VU, and aside from 'heorin' the best known outside of fans. it's dark, plodding, drugged out and blissed to hell and back, but still has some romantic notions going on. however twisted.

7- begining to see the light- live/album- a song of odd optimism and stranger lives to be led. the whole 'how does it feel to be loooooooved' part kills me.

8- waiting for my man- live+album- give the hats off to lou and sterling, and then yule for getting the funk in there. always inspired me to listen again.

9- all tomorrow's parties/femme fatale- the best nico songs done with VU, except when they did that live 'nothing song' or whatever that 30+ minute thing was..

10- rock n roll- live+album- 'it took no complications, you could dance to that rock n roll station and it was AAAAAALRIGHT (hey, here she comes now!)

eedd, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

never mind, i just re-read the title of the thread.
i am a fool of the highest order...i guess a few still might work...
no. nevermind.

eedd, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

The very beginning of "Candy Says" hits me harder than any other song, opener or not, on any of their albums. After that, I'd put "Pale Blue Eyes" and the rest of the album is pretty standard "yes this is VU and they're great" fare.

Charlie Howard, Thursday, 12 April 2007 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

damn maybe 'pale blue eyes' should be closer to the very top. simply lush and beautiful

Charlie Howard, Thursday, 12 April 2007 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

shoulda locked thread after the first response. best song is whichever is playing at the time.

Edward III, Thursday, 12 April 2007 17:11 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, it's pretty even (in terms of the high quality it maintains throughout)

Charlie Howard, Thursday, 12 April 2007 17:13 (nineteen years ago)
