man - tortoise is exactly what sours me on post-rock. way too cold.

but look at this list! they have got to be my least favorite band with influences this awesome...
{Can Liquid Liquid Sonic Youth Neu! Mahavishnu Orchestra Steve Reich Ornette Coleman The Soft Machine}

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The Mahavishnu Orchestra ain't all that

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I like those (well, I haven't heard Neu! or LiquidLiquidLiquidLiquid), but I also love Tortoise and think they're warm and cozy.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

The 80s are back!

sexyDancer, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Why does everyone like bad 80s throwbacks?

artdamages (artdamages), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

The Tortoise backlash hasn't hit me either.

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

they're bad

tortoise, that is

Dancefloor, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

the first two Mahavishu records are dope.

I like tortoise, but I only have 2 records and don't feel the need to have any more.

morricone is an influence, zappa too. the first, good, the second, ecch. didn't much like the more overtly zappaesque bits on "standards." still like "tnt" quite a bit, the zenith of '90s muzak. mahavishnu is ok at times...parts of "birds of fire" are quite nice. never much liked the first tortoise stuff, though, and have not heard the latest one.

eddie hurt (ddduncan), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

wow - zenith of 90s music, eddie? thats high praise... maybe i should try TNT.

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

TNT is pretty good, Millions now Living is a very warm and pretty album, one of my very favorites. unfortunately everything else they've done sounds like an assemblage of influences and bores me.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Note Eddie said "zenith of 90s muzak." I do love TNT, though. Kyle is right that that album plus Millions Now Living are their greatest achievements.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I meant to bold muzak.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, who are the 80s throwbacks in this thread?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

liquid liquid bro

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I listened to TNT for the first time in awhile and kept skipping to the next track after a few minutes into each. Kinda boring (and not in a good, relaxing way) and soul-less.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I haven't heard them.

Man, everyone who's said on other threads that TNT is gorgeous and soothing to thread.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i've said it plenty of times, that if it weren't for Tortoise's influences, i'd probably still be listening to "college rock"

cue gygax yelling indie guilt at me

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Tortoise and their AMG influences. Sue me.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Jordan, you would absolutely LOVE liquid liquid. they're a heavy (cross)rhythmic, super funky, experimental band. you'd totally know their song Cavern - sampled for White Lines. i don't think their Grand Royal anthology is still in print, and don't know how easy it is to track down, but i'd do a trade if you want

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

That sounds great, e-mail. I could return the favor with the new Tied + Tickled Trio - they're like Tortoise except way funkier.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

those are famous last words if I've ever read any.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, because that sounds horrible or because Tortoise is that funky?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

dennis young a guy from the liquids is really nice. i emailed him because he sent my radio station a copy of his new cd and he offered to send a cd-r of liquid liquid stuff. then i forgot to email him back. still kicking myself there. although I have some mp3x. i love me some bongos.

artdamages (artdamages), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

both!

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh. Seriously, T+TT is fantastic, I'll burn some for you if you'd like.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

that's okay, I'm curious but not that curious.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Alright dude, your loss. They're a side-project of the Notwist btw, and I wouldn't say they're actually post-rock, more like jazz if musicians actually stuck to ideas and melodies for longer periods of time (+ hot beats, of course).

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

oh I know who they are, I just haven't gotten around to it, and I'm not much of a trader. Don't wanna keep your hopes up, sorry.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

ok - TNT is lovely and warm and soothing. Million Now Living is nice as well. Despite no real desire to hear more, I picked up Standards, which I never listen to.

derrick (derrick), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I wasn't expecting a trade, but that's cool.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Jordan, i actually want some brass band stuff and figured you could hook me up righteous.

i actually have no desire to hear t&tt either, sorry. i'll get to emailing.

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm assuming the first part of your email is correct?

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

The second part of his email is correct anatomically.
