The Hunches – Hobo Sunrise

Most, if not all, of my favorite records of this year have been granted their own respective threads, how come this one hasn't yet?

Poppier than the Drones, less self-concious than the Trail of Dead, trashier than the Ponys, more melancholic than the Birthday Party. On Hobo Sunrise, they sometimes remind me of these bands, in a vocal, in a guitarriff/lick/sound or because of a similar feeling they manage to invoke. Yet they have more propulsive power than all of the above and rock farther out on this glorious album than any other rock record I've heard this year.

I believe it's officially out now, so let's hear it: what do YOU think?

I love it. Reminds me of all the great Crypt Records stuff from about 94. Still haven't heard Fuck Disco Beats though - is that as good or better as the album, generally speaking?

THanks for the heads-up - it's out on Monday over here. I loved Yes. No. Shut It. - how does this one compare?

It's better. Less immediate, but deeper, and darker. For all their chaotic/self-destructive aura, their use of noise and feedback is really artful, and the middle of the album has some fascinating shadowy passages of pure dissonance. But there are still the great songs, pristine and perfect - the closing tune is so pretty and melancholic its heart-breaking. And they have a totally unique sound, delicate like a chainsaw.

"Fuck Disco Beats" is the pre-album 7", right? Haven't heard it myself either.

Stevie is right about the sound re: noise and feedback. Integral parts of the songs rather than 'added effects'.

'fuck disco beats' is *so* worth tracking down - its ludicrously silly and unpleasant, and exhibits their Buttholian side, but its priceless. There's another track on there too that's not on the album, and of course the wonderful 'when i became you'...

They play the Windmill in Brixton on September 21 with Comanechi and Monkey Island, we're putting the show on - I cannot wait.

c'mon you skanks - this album is *genius*. 'droning fades on' is the most precious tune!

four years pass...

their third album, exit dreams, out on in the red before xmas. and it rules - more chaos, more noise, more beautiful pop hooks hidden in the melee....

exit dreams is so fucking good.

^^^^^^
Had heard some of this passing, but picked up the record this weekend and played through a handful of times already -- so so good. Some really great tunes start to shine through (the noise) after a bit. Too bad it's their last!

I guess I need to check out the earlier records...
