Is it really obvious to pick Waiting for a Superman?

I don't know, but it's my number two, mainly because of the drumming. I'm going to be boring and pick Yoshimi, not because I think it's their best song (which it isn't even close to), but because it's fun, it's dumb, and I like it.

"She Don't Use Jelly": worst single of the 1990's?

Pessimist (Pessimist), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 04:38 (twenty years ago)

Oh come on. Try Deep Blue Something "Breakfast At Tiffany's" and countless other post-Nirvana "alternative" one-hit wonders.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 04:44 (twenty years ago)

I will admit such songs are, for the most part, not-very-good -- but they're also eminently ignorable. I can't imagine ignoring "She Don't Use Jelly" -- it's not only bad, it's ostentatiously bad. The lyrics are deliberately unpleasant; the queasy slurring of the tune is dizzying. And that chorus -- oh, good heavens. I literally can't imagine anything more annoying than this song -- it is the musical equivalent of an unidentifiable thing coated in an equally unidentifiable viscous substance. Possibly Vaseline, possibly not. All I know is, I don't want it near me.

Pessimist (Pessimist), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 04:54 (twenty years ago)

aw.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 04:56 (twenty years ago)

Oh, now I feel guilty. Not guilty enough to change my mind. Guilty enough to listen to some of their later work, maybe.

And then again, maybe not.

Pessimist (Pessimist), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 04:58 (twenty years ago)

"Jelly" was always redeemed for me by that weird queasy slide riff, especially when it comes in like a rush for the outro. I never really liked anything else about it, fwiw.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 05:03 (twenty years ago)

"She Don't Use Jelly" is not exactly one of their best, I'll give you that.

Is there anyone on here old enough to have seen them with Ronald? I saw him with the FLips 3x from 1992-1995 and was definitely the highlight of every show for me. Definitely the first time I'd ever heard anyone play a ring modulator live. He understood space and restraint but could go off the deepend with the best of them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tN7lEAShGjM

So yeah "Turn It On" esp. live for reasons in the video. Going from noise odyssey to country flatpicking (with a slide!) then adding heaps of Frippertronics atmosphere during the loud parts.

Ronald seems lost to the great underappreciated weirdos of rock annals. Where is he now?

Per Broccoli’s post from three years ago, Lips w/Ronald is pretty high up there on my list of concerts I would see if I had a time machine. I caught an early Soft Bulletin era show and didn’t realize he wasn’t in the band anymore and while it was a good show for other reasons, I was pretty disappointed at the lack of guitar pyrotechnics

Are all of these "poo"?

JimCarrey, Tuesday, 16 March 2021 04:01 (five years ago)

It should be 'What is the light?' but I once came late out of a bar in Lausanne and decided to walk home with Yoshimi; I walked into a church courtyard just as it started snowing and 'Morning of the Magicians' came on and it was one of those perfect conjunctions of music and setting. I only have to hear a few notes of it to be back in the snow and the lights and the darkness. So that.

Nice one. I recently went on a YouTube quest for live Flaming Lips circa 1994, when they were the greatest band going, and found this amazing document. Ronald was a genius. Check out the version of Mountainside here.
