Are they worth the hype? Have they impressed you with their recordings or live performances? What exactly are their influences, and what are they perpetuating? (Or, are they innovative?) Does anybody have a clue about these guys?

Eye for an Eye, Friday, 20 August 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

they are perpetuating untoward self-satisfaction among a certain subset of american undergrads.

amateur!!!st, Friday, 20 August 2004 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't like them dude

i wasn't thinking of you. i was thinking of some of the folks that attended a hair police concert at the university of chicago a few years back.

amateur!!!st, Friday, 20 August 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

definitely worth checking out. Live shows are where it's at, but the recordings are great as well (in a different way) - live, they often remind me of the second coming of Whitehouse, but LOUDER. On record, they're a bit more reserved, but only because they choose to experiment with less devastatingly loud / macho textures and work with a lot of creepy / broken scuzz drones. Check them out for sure.

Al the records are good but I'd start with the new album, Obedience Cuts, then hit the split with Viki, the 7", and the Blow Out Your Blood CD on Freedom From.

All the limited tapes / cdrs / etc, including all the guys's solo releases, are just as good.

I think that they should be arrested, or that they suffer from arrested development, or maybe they are a new incarnation of Arrested Development. They have not impressed me at all; "Blow Out Your Bllod" was an amateurish mess. Influences obviously are Boredoms, Boredoms, and Boredoms. Maybe they'll grow out of it!

Richard Robin, Friday, 20 August 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

They don't sound much like Blow Out Your Blood at all anymore.

I like the tape they released on Hospital best, followed by the 7" but I think I've reached my critical mass for Hair Police stuff; I don't think I need to own anymore of their releases.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Friday, 20 August 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

they're no Ova!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 20 August 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

IMHO, they are still a band in progress. I believe they will surprise all of us with a serious album someday, something not necessariy rooted in the sonic soil (ooh, sorry for the awkward turn of phrase) of their influences. (Which extend beyond Boredoms to, I'm guessing, Harry Pussy, uh, and... Boredoms.)

sylphgeograf, Friday, 20 August 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

they have zero appeal to me. they sound as similar to any era of the boredoms as the karate kid 2 soundtrack.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 20 August 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't really hear the Boredoms thing.

I know those dudes listen to tons of far out psych rock and creepy old noise / industrial. I've never known them to talk about the Boredoms.

Don't take your lack of reference points out on a good band.

b-b-but this is ILM

duke impossible, Friday, 20 August 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Blow Out Your Blood is an excellent mess, really good. One of my favorite NOISE records. Hair Police is like Les Rallizes but faster, on different drugs, and after hardcore happened.

mcd (mcd), Friday, 20 August 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

the fact that bands identify themselves as "noise" sort of sums up what i could say about the "self-satisfaction" idea.

amateur!!!st, Friday, 20 August 2004 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

no, wait, i take that back.

amateur!!!st, Friday, 20 August 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean to say:

Caught the end of their set opening for Sonic Youth in Detroit. I'd like to see them live again, but they definitely strike me as one of those bands it's better to see live. But that's just my approach to noise, generally.

My friend said they reminded him of Swans.

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Friday, 20 August 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

They sound nothing like Boredoms.

obedience cuts is soooooooooooo good. roger's pretty much right on, though i'm not a fan of "blow out your blood."

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Blow Out Your Blood is an excellent mess, really good. One of my favorite NOISE records. Hair Police is like Les Rallizes but faster, on different drugs, and after hardcore happened.

Except without the sick basslines, banshee vocals and reverb.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, I like Hair Police and all, but I don't see that comparison.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I got that from your response.

mcd (mcd), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

They both have that sliding-off-the-rails quality that is difficult to describe.

mcd (mcd), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Shit, at least I didn't say "Boredoms".

mcd (mcd), Friday, 20 August 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

five years pass...

How's the new(ish) one on No Fun Recordings? I think it's called Certainty of Swarms...

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 26 August 2009 03:48 (sixteen years ago)

Dunno, but they were great live at Whartscape, even with some tech issues. They killed it.

Neotropical pygmy squirrel, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 03:50 (sixteen years ago)

"certainty of swarms" was good... i dunno if they're suddenly showing a metal influence, if i missed that influence before or if i'm just hallucinating, but it sounded metally to me.

WAR - ZOOM! DEVILS - DOOMED! (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Wednesday, 26 August 2009 07:17 (sixteen years ago)

I really like Certainty of Swarms. track 2 is some terrifying shit.

sylvia plathter cathter (Curt1s Stephens), Wednesday, 26 August 2009 07:25 (sixteen years ago)

Certainty of Swarms is supposed to be their metal record, Woods of Infinity inspired..amongst others

rizzx, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 07:46 (sixteen years ago)

rizzx, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 10:17 (sixteen years ago)

gnarly sceptre, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 10:47 (sixteen years ago)
