I get this in reckid shops when looking for stuff. A decade back you could have called me an indie kid (indie-dance crossover was the OFFICIAL creed) and i knew where i was in a shop and where to find that all important sarah records band.

Now where the bloody feck do i look for the music i'm listening to these days. I get this in mainstream shops (tower, hmv) but also in the good little guys (selectadisk, sister ray).

Am i just out of touch with what to class stuff as?

aw reading that back doesn't make any sense. but take the other day looking for cornelius stuff. is this rock, indie, alternative, "electronica". argh. i end up running around from pillar (and pillock) to post looking for something that isn't bloody well there anyway.

Think i'll stick to cdnow/amazon.

You should consider yourself lucky they've still got the categories you mention when you go shopping. Here in Belgium they got their own categories for everything (and no, I don't mean it's all in Flemish or French) and, apart from hip hop, none of it's what I'm used to. I can never find a damn thing I'm looking for. (Oh and Stereolab is officially "dance" here. Which is good)

You can always ask! Seriously though, I know exactly what you mean - e.g are Ultramarine techno, ambient, chillout (hate that word) or just plain dance? I've seen them in all categories. When does house become deep house, trip hop become blunted become.....etc?

I always had trouble finding stuff in Sister Ray until I noticed that the coloured stickers are a code for which label they're on (e.g Warp, Mo Wax..). Duh!

aargh the "label" shelves too! looking for bloody weird techno noise stuff is hard enough withouy having to know i should be looking for it under "warp" or "aphex etc". grrr.

I'll annoy everyone by saying that indiephilia will only persist as long as record shops have an "indie" selection and it saves them the time thinking about all the other intereseting stuff. (i want the label indie wiped out anyway. it seemed anachronistic in the 90s.)

Clearly you should be looking at the Goth/industrial/ethereal/EBM section

Most of the time you'll find me under "rock". I went to Amoeba to buy a Mouse on Mars CD, and felt really weird standing in the electronica section. I thought for sure all the kids in that aisle were thinking I was a poser.

Jeff, where do you shop in Belgium? Antwerp? Must be. I have been in some shops there and it freaks me out. But I mainly stick to my local recordshop (in Bruges) cause he knows what I like and I can order stuff from him.

it's easy here because 85% of the stores are filed under "rock/pop/r&b" and it's just alphabetical. The corners may have other stuff but they can't take more than 5 or 10 minutes to completely finish looking over because of the lack of...well...other categories.

Ultramarine are canterbury prog, Dr C Hur Hur Hur ("United Kingdoms = one of my favourite albums, U'll be amazed to hear)
