Defend th' indefensible: Musiq Soulchild

Okay, his funk has always come wrapped in a corporate wrapper and he's probably the weakest of the nu-soul crew and he's not hardly at the Bilal level BUT
He's got at least one SOLID album of songs in the last three. That counts for something doesn't it?

I like the remix of "Halfcrazy" over the El Segundo/Chambers Bros. break. and I find some of his ballads genuinely affecting, especially "Love", sappy as they are.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 21 August 2004 04:39 (twenty-one years ago)

This was spurred by my listening to the most recent album and finding it to be okay to have in the background, if notably unremarkable.
I like womanopoly though.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 21 August 2004 04:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I just remember the video called "crazy" or something in which he flips out and throws shit while staying true to his nu-soul roots and HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

Girl, I reach out my hand to the camera and clench it because I need you. Girl.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 21 August 2004 04:49 (twenty-one years ago)

P.S. I love tha Roots.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 21 August 2004 04:49 (twenty-one years ago)

girrrrrrrrl. *opens hand, squeezes it into a fist* girrrrrrl.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 21 August 2004 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think I could like someone called Musiq Soulchild and not want to constantly mock myself.

oops (Oops), Saturday, 21 August 2004 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

baaaaaaybeeeeee *shakes head back and forth while clench fist towards chest* I am nu-souuuuuuulllll.....

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 21 August 2004 04:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm more of an Arte Lovebaby fan myself.

oops (Oops), Saturday, 21 August 2004 04:59 (twenty-one years ago)

He oozes cheese, no doubt.
And he's not exactly a brilliant lyricist.

The words to "Babymother":

Laying here just contemplating how life would be if I settle down with you
Cause the thing I fear is going on with us right now
And the crazy thing is I don't really know how to feel about it

What went on with you and I was only planned for just a night
But it seems like something much more is made of it
(and oh girl) so whatever you decide is just whatever you decide
And im a have to be straight and just move with it

Now listen here baby, I don't mean to scare you but I
See im not really ready for a child in my life right now
And lets keep it real girl, you don't really know me and I've only known you for a little while
So I guess we got a lot of things to figure out

I'm having mixed feelings bout it cause the idea of it sounds kinda nice but we both gotta be clear about what it was
Cause we cant say that it happened out of love
Now I know you really want to keep it baby wo I support you and im always gonna be there babe for our baby to make sure that he or she doesn't grow up and make the same mistake.

This reads like tortured high school lit. mag fodder.
AND YET! The guy can make a worthwhile track or two.
Womanopoly, Half Crazy, Bestfriend...

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 21 August 2004 05:03 (twenty-one years ago)

to his credit, he dropped the "soulchild" part of the name, but he still has that abunchofwordsrunningtogetherasone gimmick for all his song titles.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 21 August 2004 05:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I sorta dug that one song that i heard one time, where the music vid had ppl rollerdisco-ing like it was 1978.

djdee2005, Saturday, 21 August 2004 08:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got one of his albums, I forget what it's called.

'Over-earnest' is perhaps a kinder way of describing him. OTM about him being OK as background music.

Mil (Mil), Saturday, 21 August 2004 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

anthony if you don't write a review that takes that gag and punctuates the whole review with it driving that joke into the ground, then i'll go and steal it and do it myself!

It's mine, dude. Unless you wanna collabo (didn't somebody once do a review as critic 1 feat. critic 2?).

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 22 August 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember hearing "Halfcrazy" after Wolf Eyes destroyed my ears at a gallery show in Detroit, and thinking it was the perfect comedown after seeing them with Mammal and the Animal Collectve.

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Sunday, 22 August 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

whenever the R&B singer makes sure his "band" is in the video you know it's nu-soul

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 22 August 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

""band""

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 22 August 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

"""band"""

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 22 August 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I should really go watch late-night videos on BET at my friend's place more often. I'm probably behind on my cliches (plus I would have caught "U Saved Me" earlier).

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 22 August 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

FUCK i forgot my r. kelly poster at work

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 22 August 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 22 August 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 22 August 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Give him that double-spread of Tyrese and Usher while you're at it.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Sunday, 22 August 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

wtf I didn't say I wanted black pecs and lots of 'em I said I wanted an R. Kelly poster.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 22 August 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

currently a blow-up of Karen cameltOe's SPIN cover is the only art in my new apt and I think R. Kelly would be a logical addition (lets the visitor know what kind of world they've just entered)
