1. Streets - A grand don't come for free

If I were to change one I'd swap Interpol for the Boredoms. Primal Scream in the top 20, too much hate for them round here I'd say Dr Bill.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Saturday, 21 August 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

You guys think B and S have that good of a chance? I think top thirty if they're lucky! Lots of Sinister kids on here and all, but I didn't think that album was very loved.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Saturday, 21 August 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

M83's "Dead Cities ..." wasn't nominated ... it was the self-titled album.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 21 August 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I figured that was just a typo. I didn't even know M83 had another album. Fine, sub that out for Agaetis Byrjun.

I thought XTRMNTR's reputation was really coming around, but that might not hold true for the ILM crowd. I'm still a rookie here so I could very well be wrong about that.

B&S have the fanboy factor on their side, though I think top five like Billy predicted is definitely a bit high.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Saturday, 21 August 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i think M83 only have the one album, it was a typo afaik

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Saturday, 21 August 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

vindicated!

Take that, Sigur Ros.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Saturday, 21 August 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

No, M83 have two albums!
I would have voted for "Dead Cities ... " in a heartbeat, but the self-titled isn't nearly as good. Did people vote for this, thinking they were voting for "Dead Cities"? Shenanigans!

Sigur Ros and and Primal Scream polarize opinions around here, so I'd be surprised if either were in the top 20. I'd lump Wilco and Interpol in with them too.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 21 August 2004 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Everything polarizes opinions. Enough people have heard YHF that it doesn't matter how many people hate it because just as many love it. I guarantee top 20 for that album. Scream and Sigur you might be right about and I agree with you about Interpol, but no way YHF.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Saturday, 21 August 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Dr Bill's selection looks good to me - esp. the top two. I'd expect Kish Kash higher and Rooty lower though. And the Avalanches at no. 3.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 21 August 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

you'll eat those words, Dr!

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 21 August 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I will send you $10 if Sleater-Kinney makes the top 20.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Saturday, 21 August 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 21 August 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Face it, Kid A's probably gonna win. Lurker vote and all...

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Saturday, 21 August 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Kid A has about even odds with Discovery--if it was anywhere else I'd say Kid A is a shoe-in, but with ILM's dedication to working outside of canonization, I'd say it's likely but not certain.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Saturday, 21 August 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Whatever, I seriously will bet fifty cents American money to be dispursed evenly among the ILM massive that Dizzee Rascal is #1.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Saturday, 21 August 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

daft punk is gonna sweep.

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 21 August 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

might be right!

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 21 August 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I will say this, as much as I have attempted to call bullshit on the lists so far, I am really extremely confident that ILM's top 20 of the 00s-so-far would totally CRUSH LIKE HULK any other similar top 20 that any other group of folks would put together. SO THERE.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Saturday, 21 August 2004 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

My prediction is that the #1 album will lead to some sarcastic comments from at least two of ILM's zany tribes.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 21 August 2004 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

they might also do some light dusting.

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 21 August 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

And don't forget the vows of self-exile.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Saturday, 21 August 2004 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry i fell asleep between my last post and the one before that rendering the joke fairly absurd.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 21 August 2004 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The fact that Daft Punk has yet to chart worries me considerably and while it might only mean that in fact they placed very very high it also alarmingly means the possibility exists that they have not charted at all. Therefore I feel it's time for me to leave ILX even though I've really enjoyed it thus far with no other issues. But this is the straw that broke the camel's back. I shan't return.

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 21 August 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

dom, all is forgiven

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 21 August 2004 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Gear do not Fear.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 22 August 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

rooty >>>>>>>>> kish kash

*runs*

tricky disco (disco stu), Sunday, 22 August 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Daft Punk luv is possibly even more baffling than Radiohead luv. I may explode if they end up 1-2.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 22 August 2004 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Basically, this whole exercise is a vale of bafflement for us all.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 22 August 2004 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

tricky disco is otm

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 22 August 2004 00:27 (twenty-one years ago)

tricky disco is otm

Very much so. I don't even like Kish Kash much, but I voted for Rooty pretty high.

And there's little to no doubt in my mind that all three DP's placed top 40.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Sunday, 22 August 2004 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I voted for Rooty very high and I did not vote for Kish Kash at all.

WTF is baffling about awesome robots making killer beats and people perceiving such as kickass? Kids these days.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Sunday, 22 August 2004 04:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I long for a future where our robot overlords control our minds with killer beats

Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 22 August 2004 05:25 (twenty-one years ago)

That time is now.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 22 August 2004 05:41 (twenty-one years ago)

What about Lloyd Cole?

ilx is his domain, in a way.

the bellefox, Sunday, 22 August 2004 10:39 (twenty-one years ago)

BERSUIT VERGABARAT - HIJOS DEL CULO
-- the neurotic awakening of s (stevem7...), August 21st, 2004.

Steve was it you who voted against this album and if so why. And why are you mocking here what you don't understand. And where is the love.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

for stats fans these are Metacritic Top 100 Albums [mostly from this decade]

http://www.metacritic.com/music/bests/

The following is a list of all albums in Metacritic's database. Note that an album must have a minimum of 7 reviews to qualify for this list.

Metacritic's database currently includes 350-400 albums a year beginning in 2000, with a small number of albums from before that time.

what percentage of ILM top 100 will match Metacritic top 100?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

It will all be exactly the same, except I think Loretta Lynn will edge out Led Zeppelin for the top spot.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

ILM Albums Summary so far:
http://base58.com/ilx/ilm/top100/20002004/albums/albumsupdate.html

DJ Martian (djmartian), Sunday, 22 August 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

No other lists posted on this thread please!

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Sunday, 22 August 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, I guess it's perfectly OK

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Sunday, 22 August 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Amnesiac or Kid A will win this, with Discovery at #2. Boy In Da Corner and Kish Kash will make the top 10.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 22 August 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't read any actuals so far (been away for a week). My guess for 1 - 10 was/is:

Kid A, OPM, Discovery, Hail To The Thief, Kish Kash, YHF, Vision Creation Newsun, Miss E...So Addictive, Geogaddi, Stories From The City...

zebedee (zebedee), Sunday, 22 August 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt DC are you drunk?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Sunday, 22 August 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmm, I nearly put McLusky and Lifter Puller in that 10 above - surprised they've already been and gone (judging solely by the rep they get on ILM, I've never heard either)

zebedee (zebedee), Sunday, 22 August 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The clientele album will make the top 20!

Alright, make that top 30...

fernando, Sunday, 22 August 2004 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

1 2 3 radiohead radiohead radiohead

a.r.b, Monday, 23 August 2004 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

So I've got 17 of my top 20 and all my top ten left here so far.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

5. Kanye West - College Dropout
4. Streets - A Grand Don't Come for Free
3. Basement Jaxx - Rooty
2. Outkast - Speakerboxxx/Love Below
1. Missy Elliot - Miss E...

frankE (frankE), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Was SB/LB even nominated?

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

No.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm beginning to think A Grand Don't Come For Free might take the top spot.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Was SB/LB even nominated?

-- Gear! (drink_to_remembe...), August 24th, 2004.

No.

-- Alba (albab...), August 24th, 2004.

err. no shit? in that case...

5. Dizzee Rascal - Boy In Da Corner
4. Kanye West - College Dropout
3. Streets - A Grand Don't Come for Free
2. Basement Jaxx - Rooty
1. Missy Elliot - Miss E...

frankE (frankE), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm still holding out for Trance To The Sun...

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm hoping that Rock Action will rally into the top 20 somehow. It got beat by Levez Vos Skinny Fists for corn's sake!

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

If only Tool - Lateralus was the shortlist it would have been top 10.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

don't say things like that

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

16 of my 20 left. Nine of my top ten.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

bill: mountain goats won't make it, will they? looks like these might be the 20 in some order, unless hail to the thief actually gets in:

Super Furry Animals - Rings Around The World
PJ Harvey - Stories From The City Stories From The Sea
The Rapture - Echoes
Boredoms - Vision Creation Newsun
Boards Of Canada - Geogaddi
Radiohead - Amnesiac
Kanye West - College Dropout
Belle & Sebastian - Dear Catastrophe Waitress
The Streets - Original Pirate Material
Missy Elliott - Miss E…So Addictive
Basement Jaxx - Kish Kash
Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights
Dizzee Rascal - Boy In Da Corner
Basement Jaxx - Rooty
The Streets - A Grand Don't Come For Free
The Avalanches - Since I Left You
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Jay-Z - The Blueprint
Radiohead - Kid A
Daft Punk - Discovery

scott pl. (scott pl.), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Hm...it's gonna be a toss-up. Boredoms, M83, and Mountain Goats are all maybes (and M83 was probably hurt by the s/t mix-up). I thought there was a big contingent of Goats fans here, enough to make top 20, but I Could be wrong.

On your list, I'm not sure about SFA, PJ or The Rapture (though I can't picture The Rapture not making it at all).

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Nobody but two or three people have even heard the M83 album, I reckon.

Mountain Goats won't make it; I think people in general like the Mountain Goats, but with so many albums, I don't think anyone would single out All Hail Wext Texas as one of the best albums of the decade.

I'm skeptical of SFA, too: but I'll have to check to see what else was nominated that could make it instead.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

check nominations here:
http://66.102.9.104/search?q=cache:XptP8qRdyJgJ:www.base58.com/ilx/ilm/form.html+ilm+top+vote&hl=en

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay: I'm pretty sure it'll be Hail to the Thief instead of Rings Around the World. Other than that, I'm with Scott.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Is PJ Harvey really that beloved?

And it's one of her worst albums, no less.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

don't start

danh (danh), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The reactionary ILM element loves Stories.

I'm now kind of regretting that I voted for Geogaddi.

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I never thought Geogaddi would place this high, but I find it far more unlikely that it got totally ignored.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, so these 9 will be in the top 10:

Avalanches, Since I Left You
Basement Jaxx, Kish Kash
Daft Punk, Discovery
Dizzee Rascal, Boy in Da Corner
Interpol, Turn on the Bright Lights
Jay-Z, The Blueprint
Radiohead, Kid A
The Streets, A Grand Don't Come for Free
The Streets, Original Pirate Material

What am I missing??

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

well i was hoping lord of the decks but now i'm not so sure

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Rooty.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, part of me thinks that if that New Pornographers single did so well, then they might show up in the Top 10 -- but if that's the case, then I'm surprised that one of their two nominated albums hasn't already shown up.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, you're totally right, Matt. I was getting confused because "Romeo" showed up on the singles list already.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, that's our top 10 then. I can't imagine that it will upset too many in the old guard, except for the Interpol album.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

new porn showed up already on albums didn't it?
