Well hello there!

I've been posting for a few months, so I might as well get around to introducing myself. My name is Teymur, but was changed to Tim by US immigration office wankers when my family came to America in 1992. I'm a college student majoring in history with undeclared minors in alcoholism and music obsession. Whatever I might be into now, I usually find myself anchored in two periods: mid-60s British Invasion bands and mid to late 70s pre/punk/post bands. Other bands I like are almost invariably influenced by these periods (see The Jam, Jesus and Mary Chain, the Soft Boys).

In case that's not specific enough, a good example of Tim in hot music action would be last night. On the way to a party I listened to the second Sonics album. I lingered at a bar before making my appearance, and these are the jukebox songs I remember choosing:

The Fall- - "Oh brother"
Buzzcocks - "I don't mind" (all time favorite)
The Clash - "Spanish Bombs"
Tom Jones - "Sex bomb"
The Damned - "Jet Boy Jet Girl"

My fellow musical obsessive friend controlled most of the music at the party but I managed to sneak in the first Cars album and, later on, Loveless. I drove home listening to the Strokes, "Is This It?"

Thanks to recent ILX discussions I've picked up albums by the Monochrome Set and Killing Joke (and am currently still obsessed with "Asteroid").

I'm usually friendly, open to recommendations and the such, and have been told I'm witty, though I'm afraid this whole introduction business is making me too nervous to break out any decent dead baby jokes. I'm on a lifelong crusade to make anyone who thinks they have great taste in music listen to ABBA and Queen and like them. My favorite song for right now is "I Don't Mind" as said earlier. My all time favorite is Clarence Carter's "Strokin." In all seriousness, that song says more about humanity than most artists' entire careers.

That's about the basics, then.

They still do that shit? You should have whomped the poo out of them (implicitly if not directly).

Anyway, hulloa.

hold old are you?

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder what that meant.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost

That shit was not mandatory, but strongly suggested by immigration officials anyway. My parents couldn't speak a word of English and so they ended up taking the advice. Eventually I'll change my name back (the rest of the family did it at one time or another) but that would require me to get off my lazy ass and file papers and whatnot.

I am 21 and I wish someone had told me about the Velvet Underground when I was 13.

Slim Pickens (Slim Pickens), Sunday, 22 August 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

was it you who said, recently, that they didn't like posturing, a lot?

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes.

Slim Pickens (Slim Pickens), Sunday, 22 August 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

just making sure.

hi.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 22 August 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

oooh the Monochrome Set...make sure you get the Volume Contrast and Brilliance comp...many of the albums are a bit over-produced and this collection of early singles and radio sessions has many of their best songs and in versions I prefer...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Sunday, 22 August 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, I'll look for it! I was looking for anything by them at a record store last night, but they only had a greatest hits cd (different from the comp you mentioned).

Introduce Yourselves!

the bellefox, Sunday, 22 August 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Right, I just went to "answer this first" and noticed many individual intro threads. My mistake.

Slim Pickens (Slim Pickens), Sunday, 22 August 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

now, that is a funny thread, these days.

"...but I managed to sneak in the first Cars album"

That's all I need to know. Welcome, bro.

jim wentworth (wench), Monday, 23 August 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

It fit the mood of the party, but some people liked it so much they had to leave their goddamn fingerprints all over the record. Is the first gut-level reaction to handling vynil to RUB IT ALL OVER or what? Because I never got that feeling.

Slim Pickens (Slim Pickens), Monday, 23 August 2004 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess it's a bit like the people who point at a picture or a computer screen, leaving a lasting impression on it. I don't get it either. BTW, where do you go to school?

jim wentworth (wench), Monday, 23 August 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I go to Ohio University, located in the thriving metropolis of Athens, OH. Ohio State feels so challenged by our existence that they recently changed their name to "THE Ohio State University."

Slim Pickens (Slim Pickens), Monday, 23 August 2004 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Huh, that's where my wife went to grad school. She coached Nancy Cartwright on the forensics (public speaking) team.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Monday, 23 August 2004 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

She came by here a few years ago. I don't remember why I didn't go to see her speak, though I was probably playing Baldur's Gate 2 that quarter.

Slim Pickens (Slim Pickens), Monday, 23 August 2004 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"Teymar," where did you go?

John Ashcroft, Monday, 23 August 2004 01:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Let the eagles SCORE.

Slim Pickens (Slim Pickens), Monday, 23 August 2004 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, they get TO and now the running game is going to suck. If it's not one thing, it's another.

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Monday, 23 August 2004 02:01 (twenty-one years ago)
