Just wondering.

Nowell, Monday, 23 August 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

it's got a good beat and i can dance to it.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 23 August 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

You're back! I thought you said you'd be gone for a while?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 23 August 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a good question, though: I usually say (if I want to be totally broad) that I like music with good, interesting melodies. Sometimes I say "pop" if I think they'll get my inclusive meaning.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 23 August 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh no I sound like Geir.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 23 August 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I'm here now.
It's been quite a while.
Why, are ya happy ta see me?

Nowell, Monday, 23 August 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

"Darwinist satan metal"

Wooden (Wooden), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice.
But, wait - would you, really?

Nowell, Monday, 23 August 2004 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Whose aunt is it?

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, is she cool?

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Your own aunt, of course. I'd say mine, but I don't even know who my aunt is.

Nowell, Monday, 23 August 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

she's not a MASSIVE mission to burma fan, is she?

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know. Your aunt - is she?

Nowell, Monday, 23 August 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

None of my aunts have ever been to North Dakota. But if I happened to be in North Dakota with one of my aunts -- say, just driving through -- I'd probably just say "Oh, I like lots of different things, what do you want to listen to?" Then, depending on which aunt it was, we'd either wind up listening to tapes from Ethiopia, Mahalia Jackson, or reggae.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, I've just warped the question.
I don't mean anyone's aunt in particular. Just an old aunt in North Dakota.

Nowell, Monday, 23 August 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Hotter and lower than South Dakota. That's how I'd describe my faveorite music.

Don Allred, Monday, 23 August 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

this is all getting a little abstract.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

It is.

I shouldn'ta even started this thread.
Oh well. Too late.

Nowell, Monday, 23 August 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

shall i delete it?

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, the folly of youth.

Wooden (Wooden), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't have any aunts that live in North Dakota.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I should say "Fuck it; go ahead, delete it", but I don't wanna.

Nowell, Monday, 23 August 2004 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently it's not YOUR aunt, it's just AN aunt.
X-post

I think that's wise, Nowell, great things could come of this.

Wooden (Wooden), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Mm-hmm.

Nowell, Monday, 23 August 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I so believe in you, Nowell. You're so like a teenager.

I think all the ILXers who believe in Nowell should clap their hands.

Wooden (Wooden), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Hotter and lower is are not abstract, man! Unless you're Bill Laswell.

Don, Monday, 23 August 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually have a question about a song. What are the lyrics to the Gun Club's "Jack on Fire"? I hear they're really terrible, but I may be wrong.

Nowell, Monday, 23 August 2004 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Who are Gun Club? Are they anything to do with Katy Rose?

Wooden (Wooden), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

No! Are you just being mean?

Nowell, Monday, 23 August 2004 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

This is a terrific thread. I have nothing to add, as I am struggling with the aunt in North Dakota.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Not physically.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

What's so terrific about it? I asked a silly question and then this happened..whatever.

But don't delete it!

Nowell, Monday, 23 August 2004 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't have any aunts from north dakota.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah..heard ya the first time..

Nowell, Monday, 23 August 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I think she means how would you describe the music you listen to to someone relatively devoid of culture e.g. a resident of North Dakota.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

"music geeks playing loud guitars thru too many guitar pedals"

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i mostly dig post-crunk

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

no aunt of mine lives in north dakota.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

"Post-crunk"?

X-post
Yeah. I know. You said that already.

Nowell, Monday, 23 August 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Shouldn't be too alien to the scene out there. Remember, Steve Albini is from Montana. And the Unabomber felt at home, relatively speaking. (Get it? "relatively," "aunt," huh huh)

Don, Monday, 23 August 2004 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

"Hyphy" (by Federation), that's supposed to be the new name for the new thing, post-crunk: "Over a frantic, dizzying, hip-quaking etc etc" sez SPIN

Don, Monday, 23 August 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Stevie Wonder. You know, Stevie Wonder.

Jesse Fuchs (Jesse Fuchs), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Aug 21, 2004 (07h46)

I'm japanese, and I hardly speak English.
but I want to Express my thankfulness to stevie,
so I access here and enter forum.
for me, stevie is like a fire in the sun.
it's always burning and shining avobe me,
whenever I am down or cheerful.
I will listen to stevie till I die.

I'm sorry for writing a poor English.

Jesse Fuchs (Jesse Fuchs), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Simple: By speaking to her. Unless she was deaf. Unless she could lip-read.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 06:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Jesse, that's beautiful.
and I love the pre-Andre/Andre look stevie's rockin' there, cepting the mantitties.
These days Stevie's lost some weight but there was that weird period where it looked like all the weight went to his head and his braids were slowly melting into the back of his skull?
That was creepy.

OH, right. The thread:
"fuckin' rad, auntie mine."

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 07:02 (twenty-one years ago)

This is such a good question and not many people are taking it seriously. I think it could be rephrased as: "Describe the very specific genre/style of music you like (or any) without using the word it's commonly known for. I know this might have been lazyness from my part but once I simply couldn't describe indie pop (without naming any examples) to somebody who asked me this particular question. He even thought I meant "Indian" pop.

daavid (daavid), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I took it seriously. I just also took it literally.
